Manipulative Arts / Staff Spinning - Future of PS?

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but I found this video and apparently it's a form of manipulation known as staff spinning or staff manipulation, basically they have these long heavy staffs/rods that go around their body and stuff.

Seeing as how nowadays our pen mods just keep on becoming longer and heavier, I think it would be possible that in the future, penspinning could expand to new tricks, as well as new body parts manipulating the pen, enabling one to perform real armarounds, neckarounds, and et cetera.

    Here's the video:

Wouldn't this be a pretty cool concept?

isnt this alot like batton spinning, or colorguard, or gun and flag spinning? its cool but i dont think it will ever be so popular, pen spinning is the shittt biggrin.gif <3

True, but this actually has a lot of fingerless/armless arounds, it's basically like penspinning but using a longer/heavier "pen".

It's a world away from pen spinning. Definately not the future of it. It doesn't really make sense to say this is the future of pen spinning, much less when pen spinning seems to be newer than staff...

theres no much to learn frmo this video, most of the tricks shown are the equivalent of around tricks we have

theres just one thing and its the 2p2h when he makes the tips of 2 batons touch and move together, havent seen that in PS

Yeh to me, its kinda like baton twirling. I dont think its much like psing really, except some tricks are 'expands/variations' of ours.

i think the main point of psing is that its portable
ie. you can fit it in your pocket (just, so that the dr grip tips stab you every time you bend over and tie ur laces) and you can spin where ever you want
you can't carry a staff around unless ur physically disabled and need it to lean or you want it to be deamed as a second class weapon

so i dont think that psing will go that far, or pens become that long
but it doesn't mean you can learn stuff from other stick manipulation arts

The biggest thing to me is that that doesn't even look impressive. Like even if people think PSing is nerdy or whatever, regardless when they see it they realize that it's difficult and takes practice. I watched that video and got the impression that I could learn to do it in 20 minutes. Even if it's not true, the 'manipulation' doesn't look impressive in the slightest.

i think what your talking about is band color guard, or for some HS's they offer JROTC, search it up on youtube, pretty legit, i wanna be in it, but they dont offer it at my HS, my friend's in it at another HS, im jealous.

majority of color guard in my area are female. get the ladies guys. GET WITH THE PROGRAM!

additionally the air time involved makes it a lot easier (or a lot harder, but meh!) to do some tricks that are hard in penspinning...

and you can't baton-twirl in class!

nope, pen spinning would not become staff spinning
PS and staff spinning are both my favourite hobbies, but PS is rather harder, believe me.
Also, Staff Spinnig(SS) video in 1st post shows only one style of SS, but there is another way to spin staff:
    martial style

pen spinning is practical u can do it at school at work on a airplane etc. also all u need is a pen. for staff spinning you need a lorge space and a huge metal rod thing. therefore it is not the future of ps.

well, this is cool..hehe..but how will you modify that kind of lenght?and what material is used as the barrel?.just plain wooden stick?..

The first video looked alot like dancing but with a staff.

I don't think its the future of PS beacause the world already kinda of has staff spinning.....baton twirlers. If anything I say this is a variations of baton twirlers (like at football games), not the future of PS.

His whole body is like acting as his hand huh.gif
But that would really be harder than PSing.

alrighty, being 1 of the few people who staff here ima let u know some stuff

    1. every1s calling the person a guy, that meg / mcp, SHE is a crazy contact staffer made of win lol
    2. staff spinning isnt really right. we prefer staffing or fire staffing
    3. these tricks be haaaaaard, theres not so much spins and it looks really slow but u gotta be aware of so many body parts >.<
    4. staffing came 1st
    5. arounds = wraps
    6. fire is fucking scary rolling towards ur face

Interesting concept. Traditionally pen spinning has always been on thumb and fingers. Backarounds, stalls etc use other parts of the hand but I have never spun a pen with any other part of the body. I had a quick play and a wristaround seems possible and a roll from wrist to middle of the arm then an arm flick back to hand was easy to do. Perhaps the point of this thread is to think about spinning pens with other parts of the body besides the fingers and hands.

I wonder if there is a pen spin trick that only boys can do and not girls ohmy.gif

I found this to be relevant and interesting. Since I didn't want to invest in an acrylic or stage ball (~20$ far too stereotype Asian etc.) I practice with a grapefruit (though it is bruised often). You may find your isolations get better as you manipulate a much larger object. It also helps you "spin" or "manipulate" other objects asides from a pen.

Staffspinning, however, is a totally different concept than penspinning. It's like the color guard comparison, IMO.

staff spinning is fun and kinda like pen spinning, but not quite. well you can do fingerpass with it and thats about it. its quite fun to combine with martial arts. i was thinking about joining color guard at one point. i did a lil bit of winter guard. it was fun.
