Some of the recent games I played that I liked:

Space Hulk: great game from Game Workshops. Set in the WH40K universe. This game is fast, tactical, intense and fun. This is a limited edition 3rd edition. It is a 2 players combat game where one player plays the space marines and the other the aliens (genestealers). The components and minitiatures are insane quality. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/54625

Middle-Earth Quest: fantasy adventure game located in the LOTR universe. This is a collaborative game of everybody vs Sauron (4vs1). The story is set before LOTR and if Sauron wins, then the events of LOTR don't even happen since Sauron already won but if the adventurers win it is assumed that the LOTR story goes on and the ring is destroyed. Great game that uses a very innovative card combat mechanism, I also like how the game progresses through the use of plot cards.

Agricola: this is a heavy game to digest. Lots of different strategies and choices are available, although I find the rules simple to understand. The theme itself is not that good: it's about raising a farm and developing it better than your opponents. But the mechanics are great. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/31260

Through the Ages: This is another heavy game. It is basically Civilization for board games. The gameplay itself is quite different, although the concepts are the same. It uses a card based system which I find very interesting. The board for keeping track of resource and population growth is also quite innovative. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/25613

I'll sure be looking into some of these to play with my girlfriend in the new year Zombo!

    Some of my favourites:

Scrabble - The best of all word games link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrabble

Carcassonne - Named after a fortified French town. A board game in which you create the map as you go and it's different each time. Really great game. Hard to explain so read up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcassonne_(board_game)

if you are looking for 2 players games only, I would recommend:

    - Mr.Jack: excellent deduction game. One player is Jack, the other is the detective. http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/21763
    - Lost cities: good introductory game. There is some strategic depth to it and lots of tough decisions to make. http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/50
    - Batte line: great game. I like the fact that you can prove to the other player that anything they play cannot win a battle and claim it right away. http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/760
    - KOSMOS 2-players series: there are some great games in there including lost cities, odin's ravens, hera and zeus, caesar and cleopatra, balloon cup, jambo, heave ho. http://boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Kosmos_two-player_series
    - Ingenious: great abstract strategy game. the winning condition of this game is unique in that the winner is the person who is the strongest in his weakest color. http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/9674
