UPSB v3
News & Announcements / Thanks Feature for useful posts
-
Date: Wed, Dec 16 2009 07:30:13
You asked for it, we delivered. Me and strat1227 have been up all night working on this.
If you find a good, quality, post then show your appreciation by clicking the "THANKS" button. At the bottom of each post, it will show how many users have thanked this post. Furthermore, in the left userbox of each post, it shows how many thanks this user has accumulated total. If you click the asterisk (*) next to the total count, it puts you in that user's History page, which gives more details on the thanks this person received. In particular, it gives the list of person who thanked posts by this person.
Also, thanking only works in ps-related areas. Off-topic, test-zone and other such areas cannot be thanked.
For the moment, anybody, including new members, can receive and give thanks. But if we see any problem we might change this policy and forbid new members from thanking (require 20 posts+ to thank).
There is a leaderboard, located at the top right bar
DO NOT ABUSE THIS. You shouldn't beg people for thanks or trade thanks for the sole purpose of increasing your thank count. This is the same offense as spamming to get high post count. Moderators have full control of thanks and can catch anyone abusing. You are, however, encouraged to make quality posts or threads and mention at the end of your post that if the reader likes your post, s/he should thank it (again don't do this every posts, only your best). The goal of thanking is to raise the quality of the content on the forum after all.
Example: If you like this feature, thank this announcement -

I deserve some thanks for this, I designed all the buttons for the skins

So, rather than posting thanks, it'd be better just to use the thanks button? If so, would a thanks post be labeled as spam?

I can't speak for the staff, but my opinion is that you can never be too thankful
I can't imagine a post showing genuine gratitude towards someone's efforts getting punished or marked as spam -

well for sure it makes +1 posts 100% obsolete
maybe not thanks, if you have follow up
-> moved the thanks button to the left, to avoid misclicks when reaching for quote button. -

this is neat guys
bravo!
but just a couple of things
1. the "rep points system" like in slickdeals is a no go?
i find it quite useful...
2. how come the Thanks button is much bolder and noticeable than the "Top" and "Report" button?
3. can you make it so that when you press the Thanks button it doesnt refresh the page?
rather shows the update after you refresh the page manually for whatever reason -

This button is great!
How about another button too, the 'thanks for nothing' button? Then you can click that whenever someone is a jackass... And each 'thanks for nothing' can take away one thanks. Some people will end up with negative thanks then.QUOTEDO NOT ABUSE THIS. You shouldn't beg people for thanks or trade thanks for the sole purpose of increasing your thank count. Have you seen Start's status btw? -
Date: Wed, Dec 16 2009 11:55:42
or possibly thumbs up and down buttons?

Nice one Mats. +1 on the "Thanks for nothing" button.QUOTE (SJ @ Dec 16 2009, 07:55 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>or possibly thumbs up and down buttons?
Haha, Facebook-ish. I'd rather have the "Thanks for nothing" though. -

More of youtube. Nice feature though. This can also be used for trading so that other people would be able to see if the person is trustworthy -

1. elaborate please? 1 thank = 1 rep point. Same idea.
2. Buttons were created by strat, they're not 100% perfect
3. I tried another mod that would be like that (in AJAX) but it sucked cuz it didn't have history page.QUOTE (Mats @ Dec 16 2009, 05:38 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>This button is great!

No, no -1 button. Too much possibility for flaming and abuse. This only keeps good topics someone makes, not bad. Look at the positive, not negatiev. If someone made a bad post eh should be reported
I don't really care what you put in your status tbh.QUOTE (Sh4D3 @ Dec 16 2009, 08:05 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>More of youtube. Nice feature though. This can also be used for trading so that other people would be able to see if the person is trustworthy
NO NO NO!!! DO NOT USE THIS TO KEEP TRACK OF TRADING!!! Use trading feedback. This should be obvious. This is only for quality of posts! -

Also
There's no Thanks button in the Non-ps related section...
I think it'd be a good idea to have it at least in the Off-Topic section. -

no
this is a pen spinning board, thanks is measure of the quality of your PEN SPINNING content -

lol
then i dont get why the button is in the News & Announcements section
shouldnt the thanks be a measure of how helpful you are in the penspinning community? -
Date: Wed, Dec 16 2009 22:40:17
anything in the board related section is indirectly to pen spinning because it helps you find your way in the information on UPSB. some of the topics in board related could easily go in PS related sections. for example, your own thread on UPSB fundraise could have been in board comments. so when you help someone in board related sections, the thank is worth mentionning.
in off-topic related, the majority of the things have nothing to do with pen spinning at all, some people use Off-topic + shoutbox sections a lot but do not post much in ps sections. it would be misleading for them to have high thank count because of helpful posts not related to PS or the forum. -

i see where youre coming from..
so the thanks system is for useful posts pertaining to penspinning right?
k i just thought it was pertaining to anything helpful haha
anyway, shouldnt the feature be in team forums? -
Date: Thu, Dec 17 2009 01:54:15
no, for sake of privacy, moderators are not moderating team forums very tightly, it would be easy to abuse, also a post which is posted privately is not really useful to the general audience, only for the member of that team. also a lot of ppl use their team forum for OT or spam.

Pretty amazing, helpful, this way, people know which post or thread is helpful for others PS.

Hey...
It would appear that the thanks feature/leaderboard has glitched.
For example:
When on leaderboard
Thnikk -- 14 Thanks. When you click on the posts he was thanked for 0 are displayed.
JC -- 8. When you click on the posts he was thanked for 6 are displayed.
Sankaku -- 8. When you click on the posts he was thanked for 0 are displayed.
Goldstars -- 8. When you click on the posts he was thanked for 2 are displayed.
Simplex -- 5. When you click on the posts he was thanked for 2 are displayed.
As far as I have checked these are the only wrong ones.
Im sorry to the above people, I dont mean to hate on you, Im just pointing it out and sorry you are affected. -

what happened is that the posts they were thanked for were deleted (because SOYP is regularly cleaned, and there was quite a big off-topic discussion) -

Also, can we be able to thank pm's? I get help via pm sometimes (questions and on finding tuts) and i think the thanks feature should be applied there as well.

no
impossible to check, too easy to abuse.
