Off-topic / Penspinner's Countries

Why do many chose countries they're not from?

I couldn't find any other forum that would be more suiting so I decided to put it here, if mods feel it needs to be moved then feel free =].

I was just wondering. Why do so many penspinners put countries such as South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, etc as their country when the vast majority of them are from the United States?

I used to think that UPSB was a lot more diverse than it really is when I saw everyone's countries vary from post to post which I thought was really cool, but then I realized even in the socal gathering thread or new york, a lot of people had different countries, and I don't think many came from out of country to go to gatherings other than from Canada. Also some people who put up American states or cities that they're from when under country it still says Russia or whatever.

My parents might be from Lebanon, but I was born here so I put up the country I'm from.

What I'm wondering is, are people doing this because they would rather be a part of those penspinning communities so they put up the flag? For example you put South Korea because you want to be a part of KPSA, or Japan because you want to be a part of JEB, or is there something else? Do people just feel more culturally tied to the country their parents are from? Were you born in another country but moved to America/Canada/etc when you were young? Or is it just because they think it's cool to be foreign? I'm just curious.

you can put whatever you want as your country, thats why there's a location field in addition to country also its possible to automatically set flag based on ip location but we don't do that because where you currently live does not indicate what country you represent.

Personally, I was born in Vietnam. Yeah I'm an American, a Vietnamese-American. Just feels weird if I put up an American flag. Its just feels weird to me. Like when I go to a Vietnamese area, I always speak Viet, but you see those little kids speak English to the older generation who would prefer Viet. It just feels wierd, thats it. You get it.

I think people choose the country they identify with the most.
For me, I am Korean without a doubt. But I also see myself as an American also.
I'd choose Korean-American but there's no choice for that so I just chose Korean.
    You know what I mean.

I put HK as my flag because it identifies me better than putting an American flag up, since saying that I'm "American" doesn't really tell people much about your ethnicity than me saying that I'm Cantonese.

Hmm, so I'm guessing judging by the responses that for many the flag is more of an ethnicity thing than simply what country they believe they represent, but then some others actually they also believe they represent the country they post more even if they were born and lived in another country such as Canada or America.

For those actually born in other the countries I completely understand that, whether you currently live in a different country than your flag or not.

So all in all, the flags of countries are put up for varying reasons from member to member and doesn't really explain anything about the penspinner considering how ambiguous the flag can be since it doesn't consistently stand for one solid thing (ie: country of origin, ethnicity, etc.)

Thank you for all the responses =].

It helps one identify the ethnicity of someone else. I have the American flag as my choice and it seems like a lot of people thought I was White. So it does help clarify. I'm much more American than I am Asian....so I'm sticking with the American flag.

Deep words here. But I know that I'm like asian an all, but I identify myself as American. One way to think about it is: If Your home country and America were having a war, which side would you stay on?

Not much of a choice for me there mate.

I'm Malaysian but I live in Singapore.

And if Singapore were to get into a war with America, I'd have to fight for them because I have to go to the army for 2 years and they'll want me back during a war.

If Malaysia and America went into war, that'll suck man, all the nice food will be gone. Malaysia would suck at fighting. America would destroy all the wonderful food Malaysia has so neither. That's why I don't put any of those two flags.

When he said america he meant your home country (which for him is america) So yours would be malaysia .vs. singapore

That's not really fair considering America would win regardless of whether you joined your country as a patriot, you'd get nuked anyways. My life comes before my country - I'm not a patriotic extremist.

Asian pride only goes so far. I live in America but look at my flag.

    On right.

That'd be a tough decision man.

but I guess the Singapore army wants me, because I'm going to have to serve them for 2 years starting next year.

So I guess it isn't really much of a choice.

I'm Japanese and live in Japan but I'll probably choose UPSB as my home forum. I mean UCPSB was the first PSing forum I joined. JEB guys don't like me anyway.
