Subscription prices and features are subject to changes.
We reserve the right to refuse to offer the service to any member.

If you want to make a direct donation to UPSB, click here.

The old announcement thread, "Friends of UPSB" will now only list direct donations and will include a link to all current premium members.

Thank you! Your money will be used to cover server costs. If we receive enough money, we could even improve our infrastructure to provide a more reliable and faster service. The rest of the money will be used to finance UPSB events and projects. In addition to premium membership, consider buying UPSB merchandise from Penwish (more information here).

Just some quick suggestions that seem to be coming from the shoutbox after this announcement:
    1) Have some sort of permanent option
    2) Have a different color or the option of multiple colors
    3) A different payment plan

  3. Nachoaddict
    Date: Thu, Jan 7 2010 03:59:25

    Agree with sadistic.

I would love to donate but first, I have no paypal (I think we can mail if I remember correctly?) so there's the chance it will get lost and plus, it seems kind of strange that we can just buy extra benefits like this.

I understand that we need donations for the server but a secret forum? Like someone said in sb (can't remember who srry) it's turning just like runescape.

1.) that defeats the purpose of supporting server costs since they are there every month. If there was a permanent option there wouldn't be any support for the server eventually.

2.) Things get very confusing. New spinners won't know know who has what for set reason.

3.) Server costs are around $50 + a month. This site is three steps above most internet forums. Support it mang.

I don't really like the fact that paying a certain amount = being a premium member. It's like you're forcing people to keep paying. Idk, my suggestion is that you make it permanent, but have a minimum total donation amount in order to get membership. Just my thought on this.

    1) we thought about that, but we thought psers dont stick around long enough to make it worth it.
    2) yes possible, but difficult, at least not at a level where you can custom change your color at any time. we want colors to be well defined so that ppl dont confuse a premium member for a moderator.
    3) in the future you can purchase from Penwish, sending money by mail is a difficult and risky option but maybe possible if you talk to kam.

The Vault has always been part of UPSB in its original form, but we never found a place for it on UPSBv3 until now. I think it's a great idea to bring it back. Be assured that none of the material in the Vault stays exclusive for an extended period of time so nobody is missing out on anything. That has always been our policy in UPSBv2.

permanent subscription obviosly cost more than temporary, some ppl may not afford to pay one lump sum, but can pay monthly which means more subscriptions. nevertherless if ppl wants it we could come up with something and adjust current subscvriptions accordingly.

it used to be granted at 300+ on UPSBv2, but there was a lot of spam due to this, I particularly remember a guy caleld swifter spamming to 300 and I kept deleting his posts to make it 299 ahaha good times

Spamming would be bad =\ but I look at it this way

Long time UPSB member helping out a lot in the forum with a good and notable reputation who cant donate

    vs

    Rich newcomer

The problem is that a good amount of high contributers/beneficial people to the forum don't have 1000 posts tongue.gif

I've been around since UPSB v.2 and I like to think I put out a decent amount of content over the past few years, but that doesn't mean I should get automatic access simply because I add stuff to the forum. Anyone can potentially do the same thing I have thus eventually running into nobody donating, but merely trying to attain veteran status.

    Heck I don't even have 1,000 posts.

The other issue is that people are going to continuously argue the parameters of what being a "Reputable Contributer" consists of. This just creates more hassle for admins/mods.

  26. strat1227
    Date: Thu, Jan 7 2010 04:53:26

Yeah we can't have anything that subjective for the admins/mods to deal with. In other forums, the mods/admins have complete control, and do whatever the fuck they want lol, and that kind of system works there, but in the more controlled atmosphere that is UPSB, it would cause controversy.

$15 is for your convenience (pay 3 months in advance so you dont have to renew next month). also it's better for us because paypal charges fees on every payment, so the more money sent, the smaller the fee is compared to the money

You would earn more money if the prices were lower. I think 50$ is way too much for a year. If someone want's all extra stuff, for month it is waste of money. I know that this is kind a donation, but not everyone looks this way. It turns to be a product, so for this stuff 50$ is too much. I would buy it for 30$. And if more people would do it, you would have more money from ie 4 ppl (4x30) than one (1x50)

Maybe this should be stickied somewhere, I've posted it several times in reference to several things, but VISA GIFT CARDS ARE YOUR FRIEND. Go to Publix (or Walmart, or whatever), buy a Visa Gift card for 15 dollars, and boom, you have a credit card. This can be used for ANYTHING Visas are used for. We have reached our monthly target for January. Thanks to everyone who signed up for Premium Membership ^^

However, since the people who signed up recently won't be renewing their membership for several months, we must take into account that if nobody else signs up next month (for instance, everyone who is willing to sign up will already be premium by that time), then we'll be short of funds in the next few months.

Therefore, our plan is to accumulate enough funds to survive a few months from now (depends on the length of most memberships) before we use the extra money for other PS projects.

How much would you be willing to pay for a permanent membership?

  51. RH
    Date: Thu, Jan 21 2010 02:46:15

In my opinion, permanent membership is not reasonable. because most people wouldn't be able to afford it/ want to pay for it, meaning that it will be useless to have a permanent one. The other reason is because if you buy permanent its a one time payment, and because UPSB's payments are on going, over time UPSB would be back in debt(hypothesizing that everyone/ most bought permanent and no one/ very few bought subscriptions) unless the fee was very high and if it was that high, no one would buy it (sorry if this didnt make sense im sleepy)

You're generalizing there. First of all, it wouldn't be so expensive that no one would buy it. That defeats the purpose.
Also, you have to think about newcomers. They might be willing to purchase one too, not just existing users.

I tend to agree with RH here... things that require rolling cost always require rolling subscription ... you're never going to hear of a permanent Netflix subscription or anything ... if you want it, you gotta pay monthly

    dunno, either way works tho

    About the permanent membership:

I think that it should be offered for a combination of money (possibly a large sum) + a few of the following?

-over 750 to 1000-ish posts (spammed posts should be deducted from post counts by mods and if spamming is repeated after a warning, then the privilege of a permanent membership can be delayed or even taken away depending on the severity of the spam. Mods should be very strict about this)

-some kind of other means of support toward upsb (not really sure if there is anything that upsb need help with like tech maintenance or something like organizing stuff. I really dunno...) <-problem with this is that there is quite a bit of trust involved in the giving of vertain site information and etc.

-To make sure this person is an active member, they must compete in at least 1 to 3ish battle, gathering (people at the gathering must confirm that a user participates), or any ps/pm tournament

I don't have any other requirement ideas but yeah. I think these are quite reasonable.

actually spinning doens't have anything to do w/ the community though, battles/gatherings shouldn't be necessary. (Firebird was a good example of this).

however the idea of *earned* premiemhood is something i think should be left subjective. admins/mods should be able to decide on their own who gets it, not have to give it to anyone who does x amount of things (for example, people will spam to reach post limit, do dumb battles to reach limit, etc). If it's ambiguous, only people who actually contribute get it.

that's only if they decide to do unpaid premium though, i'm nt necessarily for or against this idea.

As said before, Permanent messages absolutely DO NOT work in a place that has a rolling tab (aka. constant tab every month)
At the moment, with the tabs the way they are, and the low amount of memberships, its not even a possibility for UPSB, so I wouldn't bet your money on it happening anytime soon.

As for staff decided memberships, its a sticky situation. No matter what decision the staff makes, there will always be critisism/disagreement on the outcome, and for this reason its kind of hard to put this kind of thing into place.

I would like to remind everyone about this line:

"- Contact us if you would like to buy membership for another member."

This means subscription by proxy is possible. If you don't have paypal, you can ask a friend who does and then find a way to repay that person.
