"Once upon a time, long before the dawn of man, and long before the first pokemon took it's first breath, strange animals roamed the earth. And none of them could be captured inside of a pokeball. They roamed the earth, the tall and the small, the predators and the prey, prehistoric beasts that no human would ever get to see first-hand. This is because the land was changing... and the beasts were dying off.
Then, on one long, hot summer day, a meteor fell to the earth. It wasn't large enough to cause any significant damage, oh no... But it was tough. Strong enough to withstand forces that would have torn it to shreds upon entering our atmosphere. It crashed in the ocean, millions of years before a series of violent and rapid volcanic eruptions would form the land mass we now know as Cinnabar Island. As a matter of fact, the coast of that particular island is now mere feet away from where the meteor landed.
That meteor was the moonstone.
As soon as the meteor hit the bottom of the ocean, which wasn't particularly deep, the outermost layer exploded, spreading fragments of the moonstone for miles, in and out of the water. And attached to those fragments were tiny, microscopic creatures that would go on to shape life as we know it. Those of us lucky enough to have heard of them now call them Missingno.
As time went on, the Missingno adapted to the oxygen in the air and water, and began to grow, until they were finally able to leave the moonstone fragments. When they moved, they carried with them a very important virus... The earliest form of Pokerus, or "pokemon DNA." The Pokerus we know today is nothing more than a b*****d viral form of the original strain.
As soon as they were mobile, the Missingno had one very important task to complete... Ressurecting the form of their creator, the last member of a dying race on a distant planet. All at once, hundreds of them gathered together as tightly as a cloud of gas turning into a star, and Arceus, the god pokemon, was reborn.
Afterwards, the Missingno that were left over had a secondary function to pursue. Parasitic in nature, they had only one more instinct to follow, and that was to attach and fuse. Searching far and wide, at Arceus's command, the Missingno attached themselves to the afforementioned dying beasts, be they land, sea, or air dwelling, and within weeks of the first attaching, the first breed of pokemon were formed. Kabuto, Aerodactyl, Cradilly, Anorith, etc.
But with no humans around to capture them, they all died off.
Arceus, knowing it would be a long while before the moonstone would again shed naturally, created four unique pokemon... Three of them now considered legends, one of them no longer remotely unique... to keep him company. He created Mew, Lugia, Jirachi, and Clefairy, who would go on to leave her seat at Arceus's side to gain the ability to spawn and fulfill other purposes.
Over the next few eons, when new forms of life would rise to inhabit the earth, more layers of the moonstone would shatter, allowing the new creatures to become pokemon, and new legends to be born. Eventually, as the missingno and their hosts became more intelligent and more sophisticated in design, new animals stopped appearing altogether, and the Missingno that released from the stone would simply take in environmental data, and become new creatures all by themselves through the rare phenomenon of auto-evolution.
With humans to control and regulate the pokemon population, the legends now live in obscurity, living a daily life of either seclusion, or out in the world avoiding capture.
Clefairy, once a legend herself, now lives as an ordinary pokemon, the majority of her breed dedicating their lives to gaurding a back-up moonstone, one created by Arceus. One day, eons from now, when the original moonstone ceases to function, the one hidden in Mount Moon will carry on it's legacy.
And so the tradition continues. This is how pokemon came to be. this is how they continued to appear. And this is how new crops of strange and unusual pokemon keep popping up out of nowwhere even today.
And this is how, under strict circumstances, one can actually catch a missingno... The missing number pokemon... By swimming along the coast of cinnabar Island.

Professor Oak used Chemical Y instead of Chemical X in attempts to make three young supergirls, and Pokemon were the result.

As their name suggests, they were originally spawned from the lint in someone's pocket.

They don't age? Look at Ash's Pikachu, that thing should have some serious health issues after battling for like 5 generations of Pokemon, unless they do surgery at Poke Centers. -

in the beginning there was mew
then mew spontaneously gave birth to150... no, some of those are evolutions... lets round it to half75no, it had to be 2 of each, so they could make babies.... back to 150... but then theres the pre-evolutions of gen II+.... oh, this is getting FUCKING confusing
anyway, mew gave birth to x-amount of pokemon, and thats how pokemanz were born
and inorite? about ash's pikachu, it should be like level OVER 9000!!! by now, and it still has a tough time with some opponents -
