Pen Modifications / How do YOU make yours?
common mods only

Just wondering, how do you make your everyday spinning pens? what are the small differences you use, or the method?
people make pens different. and as many know, if you have two of the same mods made by two different people, the usually seem to spin differently
examples of personal mini-modifications:
--I make my regular MXs without reversing the ink, and with a wee bit of tape wrapped around the tip end of the ink tube to prevent rattling.
--I make my sunburst MXs by reversing the ink tube and by using a hi-tec tip (ponkotu method)
--and I use less then half an airfit grip per cap on my buster
I find these methods are the best for me.
And this thread could also be used as a request line:
--I'm interested in how people make there sunburst mx's (penwish/pendolsa/ponkotu are all different!)
I hope that this thread might catch on, because i'm positive I don't have the perfect method for every mod

interesting thread.
I do my busters like peem does them
I Do my MX'es by either removing or reversing the inktube, and I file down the bumps and add tape to the base of the front; I can't stand the bump. -

I think not only the methods but other factors come into play between different peoples mods.
What I personally strive for is perfection and having all my mods spin the way they should.
This involves not subbing parts (unless where they are exactly the same) as these subbed parts do add up and change the spinning ex. Th seven g3 in which an original bs a completley subbed can spin dramaticly different. There are also other differences as each pen is different, some bodies of the same pen or marker I find spin better than others along with other small defects which drasticly affect spinning and weight (small amounts of weight can really affect the spinability ofba mod).
In order to make for these factors I often use small amounts of sticky tack where needed until the pen meets te given specifications in weight and cog, often time beforehand a mod will be a full inch off of cog, so what I strive for in my mods is basicly the original I Want to spin what you created and have it feel the same way.
With that said other peoples mods always feel better. -

i like to put sticky taks in caps when making RSVP MX, same for comssa

Yeah.
But how about a makin kt with different designs? -

YEh, grip cuts and such I take liberties but you keep the weight how it's supposed to be and try to my cog as close as given. =]

I use dremel everything =p probably will elaborate later

This is a cool topic.
As far as I know, I don't have a single pen that I made that is just like the real thing.
I make changes to all my pens.
I have one buster that I bought from Penwish, but over time, I screwed with it. It's still pretty much the same, but not exactly.
Hm, I don't know where to start.
Every time I make a mod, I think to myself: "Don't get used to it. You always, always end up changing something."
I always really enjoy spinning something right after it's made. Back when I had like no pens and I had no comparison, every pen was a new and great experience. But now that I have spun a slightly wider variety of pens, sometimes I don't like certain ones that spin differently. Idk, it's really hard to explain.
So that, coupled with the fact that I never waste anything, means a bunch of subbed mods to the point where they're almost all personal.
Some mods, if I ever get them, I will want as an exact replica of the original. These include pens like Seven, Ayatori, Seven watercolor, famous mods like that. But other than this, all my pens have personal touches on them. For instance, I have a black bonkura KT (dr grip grips), but I thought it would look too much like everyone else's, so I put a strip of white in there.
MX's, though subbing anything will make it a far cry from the original, I always sub the tip. First, no hgg tips or grips. Second, I have made one with a metallic gel roller and it spun way to odd so I gave it away. All my MX's are extended and have heavier tips.
I have a grip aviare without the grip in the middle..
Hmm I don't know where I'm going with this. Looking back, I don't know where I was going when I started typing. Oh well -

i like to add rings of color (usually with anyball or sailor) to all white or all black mods. also I tend to put i little more grip then your supposed to. For example, minwoo mod is supposed to be 2.5 cm dr. Grip grip in front and 1.2 cm in back. So I might use 3 cm in the fron and 1.6 in the back.
I hope this is the kind of response that your looking for in the thread, if not sorry. -

@kirby
I agree. My pens are always luxuriously gripped lol. I was just about to edit my previous post and add that to me, grips are very very important. If something's wrong with the grip, then I have to do everything over again. -

When I first started spinning I would reidiculousily grip out my pens, aka 25 rings of g2 alternating red and black.
-

I forgot to buy a donga pen off penwish ( i only got the donga caps), so I had to reverse the supertip backplug to hold the caps.

usually, I'd like to make my pens as same as the original parts used.
When I was spinning heavy mods (I spin an HGG tipped MX nao), I used to add tips to make mods a little bit heavier.
I don't like color-alternating grips that much (e.g. black-red-black-red,etc) EXCEPT if it's G2 grips and NOT overgripping
that's all I think my answer is. -
Date: Sun, Jan 10 2010 05:09:47
for an mx, i like:
2 difffernt colours for rsvp and hgg grip
cutting the little rings off both rsvp and hgg grips and putting them closest to the body on the front end (like mx^2 style)
a profile/anyball ring between backplug and rsvp grip, same colour as hgg
a profile ring on the front end of hgg grip (near tip), same colour as rsvp -

It depends on the mod really.
MX:
----------------
I generally will Cut the clip on the cap very high up and then file it down so you can get the range of the cap length.
With HGG tips on the front I never use teflon tape (it changes the weighting dramatically).
The biggest thing is finding a Unique. (Perfect qualities of the RSVP, cap goes on tight, but without stressing the cap. No molding lines on the cap) etc.
I can go into a lot more detail, but I generally always try to find the perfect base pen for my mods. -

I think that's what the creator of the 1337mx had in mind too.

Date: Sun, Jan 10 2010 07:11:57
buster: 1/3 airfit grip on each cap, no other grips
sunburst mx: hgg grip + another section of hgg grip (the bit with 'ring' and first line of dimples), and HGR tip
for comssas, remove ink tube and wrap a little bit of tape around back plug and front to secure caps -
Date: Sun, Jan 10 2010 07:52:49
I make my pens from something called penwish
-
Date: Sun, Jan 10 2010 13:58:59
I just make the mods the way the creator made it so that its 'perfect'. If the parts aren't available in my area i buy the mod from penwish.
So no, i don't make it my mods different -
Date: Sun, Jan 10 2010 21:31:07
When making MX's I usually take out the inktube completely, since I don't really use them to write anyway, and if I leave it in I keep getting ink stains =\
I also like to cut the RSVP grip's bulge and put it before the HGG grip, so I won't need to stretch it or anything.
Oh, and when making double sided mods and such, I always need a good amount of grip- not over gripped, but if the grip is too short I just can't do infinities. -
Date: Mon, Jan 11 2010 00:24:21
usually i try to stick with a theme and then work on lenthwhich i think is easy then weight(more lighter) but mostly i try to keep each side the same weight
-
Date: Tue, Jan 12 2010 01:01:13
and how do you work on length exactly? to me weight seem easier than length
-
Date: Fri, Jan 15 2010 02:26:23
I always try to make my mod heavier if it's not heavy enough( for example )
I put metal ball bearings inside the cap of my commsa for more momentum(both ends)
-
Date: Fri, Jan 15 2010 02:56:54
every day spinning pens I make as durable as possible... I don't spin pens with pieces that are easily lost. rsvp mods like an mx are perfect... you rarely lose the tip. And If you put bright grips on the cap, you can't really lose the cap, either. Easy to make, easy to spin, not easy to lose parts.

So I just discovered something that's at least new to me.
The importance of grips.
Like I said earlier, the amount of grips is above average for my pens, and I spend a good deal of time on them.
Well I noticed recently that the grips play a larger role than I thought regarding actual spinning.
It's actually pretty psychological.
Alright, so I had 2 subbed MX^2s. There was one that was very nicely made and very sexii and attractive looking. Then there was another one that was kinda crappy, but instead of looking like the traditional MX^2 (flat grips in the front about as wide as the rsvp barrel, aka rsvp grips/hgg grips), it had some g2 sections at the very end. For some reason, this one spun a lot better than the good looking one. So I took off the g2 sections, and I noticed a dramatic decrease in the way it spun.
So then I color coordinated some signo/profile grip onto the end of my sexii MX^2, and it spun a lot better. o.o
This leads me to conclude that if the ends of the pen are thicker, you subconsciously think that you won't drop it as much, due to the resistance. This is probably part of why double capped mods spin so well.
I will eventually put some grips on the cap, which will give me the illusion of complete balance.
Idk if this has happened to anyone, but I think it's pretty cool. -

I like the clips on my MX's cut uber short and then dremel'd to perfection. I like the HGG grip to cover like 3mm of the tip as well which usually leads to my putting on a bit of anyball (on sunbursts). I also use the dremal to get rid of the bumb from the RSVP tip
On my Buster I like half grips with the grip covering all but like 5mm of the tip. I usually like a grip before the airfit grip as well. -
Date: Fri, Feb 26 2010 18:19:19
mx
no ink
tape on the front above the tip but before the barrel
clip super short
sunburst sand down the tip so hgg tip fits without needing to extend the front with anyball grips -

For MX:
No inktube
Diamond Cut for clip
Screw on hgg tip on the plastic instead of using telflon tape -

is anyone of you guys actually trying to make NEW mods^^
i just bought a big order at penwish to mod a few famous mods like buster and tornado mod
but i like it more to make my own mods i especially like super pirat bodys!
the feeling is jst so yummy xD
im still far from perfect at mods because im only spinning for about 3 months almost 4
thats why im modding a few famous mods now to get more feeling for it
but in my oppinion its better to make your own mod and dont "copy" it ^^ -

G-3 JIMNIES!
I put a grip over the G-3 grip and instead of tissue in the jimnie grip, I placed a signo tip. So it's much more heavier than the normal g-33 jimnie but I think it's much better.
The grip I put is from Tombo. I'm not sure what it's called but I found it in packs of 3.
Lost my green one *sob* -

well one example of what i do is when making an MX i sometimes put penwish "rings" behinde the grip just so it adds a little bit of weight and looks cool too
