I've recently been engrossing myself in glowsticking
They have a VERY interesting culture and many rules that could very well apply to penspinning to heighten our community.
I recommend everybody to go over there and just read about the culture they have Some if it is based off of the rave scene but they face many of the same problems that penspinners do (IMO).

Watch the video, do you guys think this could/should apply to penspinning as well? -

ehhhh somewhat. For the most part, our battles are friendly.
I mean we have gatherings to collaborate all the time, in So-cal.
and we're the majority of us are too young to do anything except post mean mean messages.
For now we're good, and seeing how penspinning has evolved, we're good for now. -

ok at the beginning I thought the video was ok and thought some of it might make sense for PSing until halfway through where it starting saying "Lives can be lost" which was WTF for me. It seem obvious that there were huge backlashes in the glowsticking scene for them to react that way. Glowsticking is very much a live manipulation than PS has ever been. So when they talk about competition ending in hospitals, it must have been LIVE battles, which we don't have here. So yeah... that point is pretty much inapplicable here.
Furthermore, I think it makes sense for glowsticking to be very cooperative because their art is very much based on the music. So the idea that everybody is listening to the music at the same time and dancing together is very appealing. But again this is more something that happens live, so not applicable here.
It also say that battling stops sharing, which IMO is the most appropriate argument in pen spinning. Because it's easy to imagine pen spinners holding their tricks until the next competition. But I also believe that competition can enhance emotions, both good and bad, so much more. It's true that some people can get angry but it also makes people a lot happier when they win. Due to the competitive nature of the humans, we are also pushed by battles. I am sure some tricks were invented and perfected BECAUSE of battles, so if we didn't have them, we wouldn't have much to share in the first place.
Also, PSing is at such a high level right now that just sharing ideas is not enough, because new tricks are realyl difficult and takes a lot of practice. So just sharing new ideas doesn't mean other ppl will be able to do it. So the best way to showcase those ideas is to make really cool combos with them, and one way to get such exposure and motivation to perfect them is through battling.
Finally, even if we didn't have battle, people probably would still not share their new ideas that freely. It seems that in glowsticking, real sharing means more like when you meet with other people you can show and teach them in person. In PSing I think people would do that too. But even if we didn't have battles, I think they would hold out until the next big collab they're in. -

I agree with Zombo,
you can't make a hobby/sport without the idea of battleling and winning, so I am sure some of those guys use this to battle. and not just a art.
