I know there's always a lot of people that say they don't speak English very well. So what I was thinking is that maybe we could have separate sub-forums for like Spanish, French, etc ... it doesn't need to be broken down more inside, just so they have their own little place ...

Absolutely unnecesarry imo
There are forums for those languages already and if there is no forum then there is probably no reason to make sub section of upsb for 3 people from that country. -

that create way too many forums...

I think an alternative to this would be to open one (1) sub-forum that includes individual threads written in each of the more popular languages in the PS world. Some languages that come into mind are: French, Chinese, German, Korean, Japanese, Thai, and Scandinavian.
I understand that current members might not yield great benefit of more people who don't speak English at first, but doing something like this would let us make a warmer welcome to those who may not speak English as fluently as others. While the functional language of this board is English, I think the whole idea of having a Universal Board is that this would become a place where all the intellectuals would gather, somewhat like the Ancient Greek agoras in the old days.
I don't see how those who belong to other boards cannot or should not join us as a member of UPSB. Back in the old days, when I tried to join PDS in Korea, some of the members there even went so far as translating the menus for us non-Koreans speakers. I think this type of hospitality is something that we can give as well. -

There is already a workaround. In the introduction threads, there are several threads with foreign languages written in them, such as Tagalog. Since post count does not increase in that forum, one could use it to type in their native tongue.
Also, you could create a team where fluency in your native tongue is necessary to get in. Once you get a team, you can make your own sub-forums. -

We could make threads for each major penspinning language in the Introductions forum with translations of the menus and guides on how to register, as a substitute to a complete new forum, but still just as helpful.

Don't forget we have us board ^^ (fpsb, jeb, kpsa) but translate the rules in others language with a guide for begin on the board is good.

well this would be a strong argument if UPSB was the only PS board. But since all those countries already have their community, they can already speak their language there.
I see the UPSB as having two functions:
1) Serve as the principal community for English-speak countries and other countries who do not have their own community.
2) Act as an international portal for spinners to be able to communicate with people outside of their local community.
Therefore, if you are in 1), then either you already speak English or you don't have a community. If you don't have a community, chances are it's because there's nobody else to talk to in your area. However, if there are many people, then you could make a thread such as this: http://www.upsb.info/forum/index.php?showtopic=2442 which is fine, or create a team for that language, as indicated by Eso.
If you are in 2), then naturally you want to talk with people outside of your country. Thus, you need to speak a language understood by everyone, which is English.
Therefore it's very difficult to justify why we need complete subforums for each language. I understand that such idea was proposed in the past and was part of the original plan for UPSBv3, but the situation has dramatically changed since then. -

But a lot of 2) people (mostly Korean, Japanese and Chinese) wouldn't be able to register at all on UPSB without help. They'd still want to come to UPSB for trades and information about other penspinning communities though. - I think threads with "how to register" information in the respective languages should be available.
Care if I make them in the intro forum? Or should we have one for all languages? -

if you want to do that, thats fine.

Nah, that would be bad. That would mean splitting up the UPSB community.

explaining more ppl how to register on UPSB would split up the community, right........ nice logic dude -

ahhhh who cares. let the other language peeps trade with thier people, and we at upsb speak english, well just trade amongst ourselves....chances are places like korea and japan got better pens then we do....(unless their looking for a specifin usa manufactured one...)
-
Date: Fri, Apr 18 2008 02:43:35
wtf? the reason why we trade is because there are pens that isn't available across the world. JEB would want to trade for hggs and rsvps with us because they can't find it in their area. and same to UPSB and Dr.KT. if we can all find every single good pens in our area, noone would even bother trading. this is the reason why you don't see alot of koreans trading with upsb members they have PDS store.
and this board is called 'Universal' pen spinning board. its meant to be universal. everyone in the world should be welcomed. -

Yea, but Zombo they said that they will split up into different languages and then more ppl will sign up on the different language forums. They wouldn't join UPSB English.

no, there would be just a small section for foreigners like how Swespin does this.

Have any of you actually thought about how to implement this? One sub-forum per language creates too many sub-forums. On the other hand, a single sub-forum would contain too many threads (think: all important stickies and other threads). Even if you could somehow solve that problem, you have to wonder whether the effort is worth it considering the minuscule percentage of purely non-English-speaking spinners at UPSB.

making 1 sub-forum per language creates way too many sub-forums so we can't do that.
but however 1 single sub-forum wouldn't necessarily contain too many thread. i doubt even if we make a sub-forum people from JEB, KPSA etc. would actually post alot. people would still stay in their own board.
i thought it would be nice doing this two:
1. Somehow make a translated tutorial on how to register on upsb in wateva language. (korean, japanese, chinese etc) and also somehow make it appear on the index page of upsb if you are not logged in. (Sfsr's Idea)
2. instead of making a sub-forum for 'foreigners' how about we make a sub-forum in the News forum called 'international news' if we have that. someone from other community could post important news from their community. eg. JEB guy might post something about their tournament. or PDS can say something about their tournament.
i don't know how or if this will work. its just an idea. -

Hey if people post in different languages then how could Zombo moderate all that?
