Dr. Grip Shaker (No production. Stock still left but not readily available)

I thought it may be useful to create a thread of discontinued pens since it seems to be a topic on conversations when i get messages etc etc. While we know that pens like dr.grips are at the end if it's product life cycle I was surprised to see that the authentic Namae pens (The one used for namae mod ) are not on the endangered species list. I got my last batch of namae but while the body was identical the cap was quite different. Body can still be used for SXs and the mods that use the namae body but the new caps are a little skinner and don't house signo tips. I have talked with the one and only namae manufacturer after I received the batch and it has been confirmed that all new namaes will have the new crappier cap. My advice is to hit up your local daisos and nab the old batch before they become the next M&M type pen =p

  4. Kirby
    Date: Fri, Feb 5 2010 21:00:28

I head they were like Jap shakers. Like stopped production but will still be around for several years. Then again, I'm probably wrong and your probably right.

And please share all the discountinued pens you know of. I'm sure a lot of people (including me) would appreciate it.

wait wait... these namaes... do the ends of the caps like go out instead of have a slit for signos?

  6. Penwish
    Date: Sat, Feb 6 2010 00:19:19

yes it is more like a fat pds black cap instead of a namae cap. signos no longer fit into the caps

wow really? namaes discontinued? D: ima go stock up on them as pw suggests tongue.gif

penwish, how much do you think namaes are worth now? (packs of 3 cost $1.50)

  16. Penwish
    Date: Thu, Feb 11 2010 08:52:31

That's a pretty decent price if you can get it at daiso locally. I mean usually i say namae worth 1.50-2.50 value depending how easily it is to get. It is one of those pens that if you can't get them you are willing to pay the 2-3$ to get one but if you can get it easily you may only want to pay 1$. I'd say the value will start to creep up if it hasn't already based on the dwindling supply. I don't get mine from the manufacturer directly; i get them from a store in japan so if it has hit retail stores already that means they have little/no stock of the old ones so i'd consider snatching some up if they are close to ya~

  17. blahblahting

Quite well is only in PS perspective. In reality it's a 5-10$ pencil that's been out a long time so it's just the end of it's product life cycle. If it was selling like bics i'm sure they would keep it but it's a premium pencil that has a very small market

Quite awhile ago, i bought two of what i thought were namaes, but was disapointed when i discovered they didn't fit signo tips. But i had fount out they fit impact rt tips right before we found out the old namaes or dicontinued.
i anounced it on the shout box a week or two ago but idk if anyone was on/paying attention at the time

I mean, they stopped coming to canada, and then the FINE version stopped being stocked in USA, and the pen wasn;t the easiest to find for the last couple years.... its no surprise.

Dr.grips are officially discontinued. As in they are not available to me from my sources anymore which should mean that the only place they are available in large quantities are through retail Japanese resellers so prices are a bit through the roof for me. Stores unless they have a huge stock should be slowly depleted now as well at least according to my people in hk, taiwan, and japan.

DAMN its getting harder and harder to find the good, famous, useful pens anymore. We really need another tornament or thread about new finds. There are houndreds of pens/pencils/markers that either have good bodies, grips, or metal tips. People just don't use them because no one has heard of them and I think they are "scared" to introduce new pens to the community. If are old pens are being discountinued, then find new pens. many of them could be very USEFULL if we would just use the "new" pens our stores have.

Not to be offensive, but what is the practical use of an actual metal tipped pen? Why does someone feel inclined to buy a metal tipped G-3 over a plastic tipped G-3?

It sucks that we're gonna lose our metal tips, but honestly, why would someone choose metal over plastic, the average person can't tell the difference anyway.

the thing with plastic, is that they chip
mostly only a problem with ballpoint pens, but if you press too hard, plastic is brittle and can crack and chip easily
common pens such as rsvps or g2s might do that

gel pens on the other hand, you dont need to press that hard to get the ink out, so a metal tip is mostly redundant

    --------------------
is the beginning of the end for pen modding?
or will we adapt and use other parts?
or will we go back to using double capped, anyball gripped comssas

also... umm.... on the plus side, we still have airfits

regarding signos, i need to buy another couple for my unfinished mods.....

the thing with plastic, is that they chip
mostly only a problem with ballpoint pens, but if you press too hard, plastic is brittle and can crack and chip easily
common pens such as rsvps or g2s might do that

gel pens on the other hand, you dont need to press that hard to get the ink out, so a metal tip is mostly redundant

    --------------------
is the beginning of the end for pen modding?
or will we adapt and use other parts?
or will we go back to using double capped, anyball gripped comssas

also... umm.... on the plus side, we still have airfits

    --------------------

regarding signos, i need to buy another couple for my unfinished mods.....

Not really correct from my experience....

Metal tips are for weight which people like, especially in writing.
Weight at the very end of the pen helps to keep the pen moving, and smooth on the paper while writing.
As well, it gives a very smooth feeling.

Thats why you still see "higher class" pens that have metal tips, and sometimes metal bodies. When you get to a certain weight with a writing utensil, it gets extremely comfortable, and writing is a breeze.
We SHOULD always be able to find metal parts from more expensive pens, although as time goes on, it'll prolly get too pricey.
I see pens moving to a market where they either:

    A) Use non-pen products for weight ( screws, various metals, etc.etc.)
B ) companies finally catching on, now that our main modding resources are depleting, and making their own line of pen modding products.

The fact that Penspinning still involves products created by the manipulators themselves shows how young into its lifecycle the manipulation truely is.
Manipulations like: Juggling, Flourishing, Yo-yo, etc.etc. all have products devoted soley to their respective parts.

Penspinning is one of the few, if not only, manipulations that still has users creating their own product.

why are Moonz more expensive to make.i dont see much of a difference between moonz and the clear rsvp.
other than the fact that moonz has a tinted body and grey grip.
ad what do you mean by only black? you mean the ink?
cause when i went to PW site.they had different colors.

  72. Penwish
    Date: Sat, Apr 3 2010 08:52:41

actually moonz do cost more to make. i used to work in a GE plastic factory and any plastic with the "shiny" metal shards embedded in the plastic cost about 20% more. It's tiny metal pieces melted into the plastic resin mix so in that sense it does cost more to make. However, moonz are discontinued so that's the reason it is worth more now. Pentel has no more so if you want to buy it you have to buy it from shops and resellers.

    OMFG

I just came back from the doctors and my mum had to stop by a grocery store to buy some more food.
I walked over to the stationary area and looked at the pens and saw some really weird pen, picked it up and it was a Faber Castel GripMatic.

The only problem was the body wasnt red, or green or blue, it was fluro green.

The grip wasnt black, but it the same colour as the body.

The colours were Fluro gree, fluro pink and fluro orange.

Last thing was.... THEY HAD PLASTIC TIPS D

FYI this has been over half year but i dont see anyone mentioning about it.

Original Muji twin markers are discontinued (or at least i'm definitely sure it is in Hong Kong as I did really search for them.)
The original muji twin marker's length is 16.5cm according to HKPSA, and PW's muji twin marker is 14.7cm.

In return for stop producing the twin markers, they have come up with a new (writes the same) twin marker but its hexagonal body (and who would want to spin this):
    http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/NEW-MUJI-Hexagon-Do...s-/230458320805
