Some of you may not know this at all, dno how it is in asia but I think many people spin there so it's considered pretty normal.. maybe.
Oh yes, I am a nerd. Are you? Do you care?
Cause these times, people rather call you a "japanese nerd" instead of telling you hey nice how did you learn that?
People laugh at me because I am nerd and yes, I am not saying I ain't nerd. Although I surely ain't loner as part of the wikipedia's definition sais, but I am pretty much a nerd.

I am going to ask my parents to buy me a midi piano for christmas, hope they're going to buy it. Cause I want to play on piano. But if I'm going to play well on piano is anyone going to call me a nerd? NO! Cause hey, he's musician, thats cool! But in my own mind, piano is nothing else than penspining. I do it for my own pleasure and if I am nerd into piano (so that I am not officialy a nerd) or penspinning (so that I am nerd for everybody) it's all the same for me. I stated one thing to myself - If someone is going to dislike me because of penspinning, that guy is not worth of my friendship. He might be a better person, but this is what I believe in.

I guess your opinion guys is going to be very different. Although this thread is pretty close to many other threads (like "what do ppl say about your pens etc.), I think you could find it interesting.. dno.. otherwise it will just fall into 5+ page of topics in this section smile.gif

Stupid American View of what a "nerd" is:

Someone who isn't like them *cough* poser *cough*

Better get used to it man. This is the 21st century.
Us "nerds" have embraced the change. Those who have not will continue to see us as nerds.
Just give it some time, in a few years us "nerds" will be the norm and we will evolve into the nerds of the decade.

personally I prefer the term "geek" much less demeaning IMO.

What would the world be without nerds? Nerds are the people who know cool shit that can get you through a boring class. Who can hack an admin account and put a game on the server for everyone who is bored in I.T? A NERD!!!!

They would be a wreck without nerds.

A nerd is a person who is really into something. I am really into penspinning, but also into a lot of other things. Everyone with atleast some kind of life that is worth living is really into something atleast, which would make us all nerds. Those who use this word most often is the sporty kind of kids, who are (yeahm you guessed it) more inte sports then any of us are into penspinning. Oh, and also those brats without a life worth living.

rather than others telling me that i'm a nerd, i tend to announce the fact that you're a nerd
like if someone goes, "why're you spinning your pen??? huh.gif "
    i'd just go "'CAUSE I'M A NERD!!!! tongue.gif "

it seems like openly admitting it will make it easier for me, since i have no problem with being a nerd
there are those who are nerds, but wanna change (and end up becoming posers), but i love being a nerd, rather than the alternative, which tends to be some form of a jerk

I also rather to be called a geek. In my school there are geeks, jocks, stoners and preps. I like being a geek because even though we get made fun of a lot, we are never looked down upon in a derogatory way like everyone else. Also, once you get past the yuppie high school crap, geeks have it all. They can play sports if they want, but jocks can't do geek stuff, then they'd be geeks. Also, especially in uni. geeks get the girls as well, so I say bring on the geekdom.

My school is too big to have any cliques that dominate the rest. It's awesome.

Nerds? Preps? Jocks? Who the hell cares?

In the Western view and sense of the word, I, as well as most Singaporean guys would be considered nerds. It's part of our culture.

Just to those who answered they like to be called geek etc. instead of nerd - the purpose of calling someone nerd IS to annoy him, not to put him in right group of people tongue.gif

hehehe I do that too, except I say "Japanese nerd", it turns the the converstaion into joke more than just saying "nerd", people's attention to my nerdness usually just goes away.

    Why Japanese?

The effect of saying Japanese nerd is much bigger than "asian nerd". And using any other country would lead to the same question, so its japanese, it sounds good and people in here kinda generalize asia as china and japan..

not all pen spinners are nerds... people actually think it's kind of cool, the people who CANT do it though hate it... ( no one CANT do pen spinning ) if it's true why denie it... being called a nerd is actually more of a complament since there showing there understanding as your peers that theyrecognise you are more skileld and (maybe) smarter than them...besides who DOESNT wanna pen spin =(

In my school, anyone who is Asian is considered a geek, well in my class anyway. No one in my school just comes up to me and goes "omg u geek, stop spinning ur pen." But one of my friends called me a gerd once and it hurt like a biatch gloomy.gif , lol jkjk. Every1 in my class thinks my spinning is kewl, no one has called me a geek for penspinning b4 but maybe for my extremely good maths results in yr 7 but not for penspinning. Only been called a gerd, once, from my friend.

HEY! just cause we r stupid (e.g. Georgey biggrin.gif ) dont mean u should use us as an insult!

hmmm....well actually in my school, pen spinning was STARTED by someone who happens to be very popular (u kno, one of those guys whos cool with ppl, but still does nerdy stuff) so penspinning is very much accepted as only the 3RD!!! most useless thing on the planet!!!

I really don't care if someone calls me a nerd for doing a Rubik's Cube or Dance Dance Revolution or pen spinning or origami or Online games. I think it only matter if you have friends and we all do. I do not think I am a nerd in my school but I'd say in the middle. But hey, if somehow that dropped and I was considered a big nerd, I really wouldn't care.
