Whenever I attempt to do this trick, I always end up just doing the normal sonic instead. When I pass the pen from 23>12, My middle finger is always closer towards me, so I end up doing the normal sonic. Any tips to prevent this form happening?

Try thinking of the twisted sonic as two separate tricks. Think of it as a normal charge 23 - pass reverse 23-12. If you try thinking of it like that, it might help you out. So when the part of the pen extending outwards from the palm / inside of your hand area, is starting to rotate circularly back towards your thumb, that's when you want to try and complete the pass reverse ( the moment the pen starts heading to the thumb perform the pass reverse don't wait to long or try the pass prior to this). Hopefully this might help you out a bit.

Ah, I was able to solve my problem before your post but thanks anyways. Do you have any tips for the shadow? I can't get the pen to leave my middle and index finger

Try keeping your fingers relaxed and lose while you have the pen in the starting position, then kind of try to perform the charge 12 palm down, while also adding a bit of wrist movement to help with the momentum. The pen should leave the fingers naturally, and this is when you want to try and extend all your fingers straight and parallel to the ground to allow the pen to spin on top of the hand successfully. There isn't really any trick to it, i'd suggest you watch some youtube tutorials and just keep practicing. You'll get it, it's just a matter of time and practice.
