UPSB v3

General Discussion / Cash entry/prize competition

I've been thinking about running one of these (maybe in June or in August, which is when I have some time off. Or else it will be in November). This is what I was thinking:

Knockout tournament. Each round, if you lose, you are eliminated. If you win, you go through to the next round.

Prizes: For 1st and 2nd places (maybe 3rd too if popular) split 80/20 (1st and 2nd get prizes) or 70/20/10 (if 1st-3rd get prizes). With all the money from entries used for prizes.

Entry fee: Of about £2 (that just under 2 dollars, use a currency converter if you're not sure how much that is).

    Potential problems:

Who is taking the money? Now, at first I was thinking everyone could send the money to me, however, people may be more comfortable sending money for the competition to someone else, more trusted (i.e. who has done more trading/transactions) (I have done only 1). Vote in the poll above ^^ Someone else would have to put themselves forward for this task (feel free to in the thread).

Not enough entries for a decent prize:

Now, I was thinking of putting £20 in myself to the prize fund. This way, there is an assured prize pool of at least £22 (i.e. if only one person were to enter). If just 6 people compete then the prize pool is £32, which aint too bad for a small comp. Of course, the more people that enter, the more is at stake.

    Judging:

Judging will be done by at least 3 judges. I will try to pick them out from UPSB mods/admin if possible. If not, people are free to put themselves forward. There will be no payment for judges, but, if this competition is successful, payment may be given in future.

Judges will use the system of giving a point score to each player based upon categories such as difficulty and presentation. The participant with the highest score will win.

    Cheating:

I will find one or more people, very familier with video editing, to look at videos and judge if cheating has taken place.

    Entry requirements:

Only open to UPSB members. I might limit age to 16+ or 18+ only or something like that. Feel free to discuss this.

    Future tournaments:

If this is to go well, I would like to make a regular (yearly or six monthly) event. In future, I would like to see 80% of total money going to the prize pool and 20% going to the judges.

Feel free to post thoughts, questions and ideas.

    Sounds good, I'll be in.

Paying judges sounds like a nice idea as there's an incentive to judge rather than just doing charity work.

I say it'd be a good idea to send the money to someone like Zombo or JC. Trusted and respected.

£2 is 2.97666 USD according to google.

One potential problem is not having enough participants, but I guess we'll just have to see how many people respond to the thread as the skill level on UPSB isn't very balanced.

I am aware of that post Zombo, but this is quite a specific proposal. Also, there are more options in the poll and this is not a discussion of something theoretical, but of something that could (and probably will) happen.

I was thinking best would be someone like this, or Penwish. Maybe someone with +a lot on whitelist? Of course, they would have to agree. The person involved could perhaps take a small payment in return for this task. It would be good for people to tentively put themselves forward for this, although, nearer the time, of course, I would be in contact with people about this. Who the money was going to be sent to would be announced before any money was sent out.

2 people say they would be in so far...

Penwish, Zombo, or JC all sound good to me. But I think you're right, someone like Penwish would probably the best choice.

And 2's a decent number. Just gotta give it time. Not everyone checks the forum religiously.

I was thinking about this yesterday. I think maybe a prize for something like 'best combo' or 'biggest upset'. Something that anyone can win, would solve this issue.
