What defines a pen spinner? The spinner's mods or the spinner's skills?

A pen spinner's skills is what makes a person a pen spinner. They apply their skills, using mods to perform tricks and combos. But does a pen spinners' mods disguise a pen spinners true skill? Say if you were watching youtube and a guy was struggling to do bakfall with a pencil, would you laugh at him and go 'wat a noob' while u are doing bakfall with a Dr.kt? or how about the opposite? a spinner using a pencil to do bakfall laughing at a person doing a bakfall with a Dr.kt. It is very difficult to differentiate the skills of pen spinners when everyone is using different mods. It is pretty obvious that both skills and mods both make a pen spinner who they are, but which one defines them more?

i dont think the mods have to do with it, since a noob spinner can get any mod he wants if he pays. its all in he speed/motion. if the spinner has a KT, but is slow, he is still a noob. if a spinner has a plain pencil, but is fast, i'd say he's good.

that's basically another way to spin the age-old debate on longer and heavier pens...

"purists" will claim that longer and heavier pens are easier to spin, therefore such spinners do not really possess skill themselves, but rather rely on the power of their mod, as you put it.

others will claim that regardless of the mod you spin, you still need skills to do it. having a better mod just releases the constrains on pen spinning. in other words, having a better mod allow you to perform better tricks only if you have the skills to do it.

finally some claim that the length of your mod has no influence, it's just a question of taste and getting used to or "what's appropriate for your hand".

What I think defines a pen spinner is someone who actually takes the time to learn tricks, be involved with it, take an interest etc.
