As we have agreed last year, the main series of UPSB collab focus on pure spinning. In that sense, UPSB 2nd will also be a spinning showcase with no restriction: people simply submit their best combo.
This collab will however be a bit special. While it will no doubt contain some great combos, the mood of the collab will be light to reflect the strong social community of UPSB. Pen spinning shouldn't be taken too seriously because it's just for fun. Here are the details:
- Two editions
- The standard version of the collab, which features all the combos with standard editing. This would be the collab you want to show around internationally for example. This collab will be around 4 minutes, including editing.
- The extended version, which features all the combos + FUN STUFF. To get more people involved, we will have two types of entries; real combos and fun stuff. Real combos are based on skill and only the best get in both the standard and extended versions. Then we will use some fun stuff which are judged on how funny, cool, interesting and relevant to UPSB they are. The fun stuff don't even have to contain pen spinning at all. The idea is that it's kind of difficult to sit through 3-4 minutes of non-stop spinning, so the fun videos are there as interludes between videos to keep it varied. This will be around 5-5.5 minutes, depending on how much fun stuff we get.
Both videos could potentially be edited by different people.
- Fun stuff
The fun stuff can be anything that's relevant to UPSB or pen spinning in general. Here are some examples:
-> A funny failed combo
-> Spinning weird objects, in weird places, in weird situations, with weird angles, effects, etc...
-> Other manipulations (maybe if its really interesting)
-> Funny UPSB references, inside jokes
-> Gathering vids
-> Funny modding vids? Trading vids?
-> Anything fun like dancing, etc.
Basically you're free to do whatever you want as long as you think it will be funny or interesting to UPSB. Fun stuff should be short; 5-10 seconds max. You can have sound but music is not recommended (because collab already has music, but if it's really funny we can always arrange it). The other idea is to get members that normally don't participate in collabs to get involved. Even if they might not spin well or at all, it would still be interesting to see them in the collab. Also the fun stuff, doesn't even have to a video, it can be pictures or possible sound only.
- Theme
To keep with the light mood, the theme of the editing will be bright colors and music.
- How to submit
Real combos must be:
- 10-25 seconds long
- You must be a "REAL" UPSB spinner, whose main community is UPSB.
Fun stuff must be:
- Less than 10 seconds
- Anyone can submit, whether they are UPSB main or not.
You can submit an unlimited number of real combos and fun stuff. Only one of your real combo will be accepted at most, but fun stuff is unrestricted. You can have both your real combo accepted and fun stuff in as well.
Basically, just e-mail >> [email protected] << with your submission. It must downloadable or attached, NOT YOUTUBE.
Deadline
August 1st, 2010.
The videos will be released late August.

No sign-up required; just send your stuff. But you can post here if you are planning to film a real combo and/or fun stuff. Try to get people involved in joining the collab.

i mean, what i would classify as the lightest would be something like spsl 4th
nothing outgoing, just generally upbeat
but overall, badass/in

and i recommend not lame music this time, something more professional and epic
portraying UPSB as the "fun" board is not a good image in my mind, and having anything "fun" attached to the name "UPSB 2nd" is terrifying

on the issue of image/idea of 2 versions
releasing a second "extended" edition is always a great ploy to make people watch almost the same thing twice (see lotr... and then see lotr extended edition XD)
i'm not sure how some of the upper and god tier spinners of upsb feel about the idea, but i do think upsb is more of a relaxed, light, community orientated board
JE seems opposed, but idk, but i think he/i/we/i'm not sure who i'm talking about now is seeing this as "we aren't pro like (insert board here), we'll carve out a different niche"
which ever is the case, i think UPSB 2nd (for serious god tier spinning) and UPSB Party 1st (god tier injected with good old UPSB fun) is a good naming idea -

i truly believe UPSB is better then our images makes us out to be
UPSB 1st, imo, failed at representing our board solely on the editing decisions.
the first 21 seconds screams: this board is a joke. and not: this board has been a foundation for spinners internationally
the music screams: out of date, and not epic (making the spinning look and feel less epic)
the editing fit well with the music too: not epic, and even amateur (the different video dimensions were not even touched, pixely "GO!" [which is lame], and a lack of movement [key framing adds more then one might think])
the best part was the spinning, which could have been the idea, but overall the editing took away from the collab and didn't add a thing besides an image of immaturity
be careful for the 2nd one, i TRULY believe we are capable of something great -

the upsb 1st was ok for a first try, UPSB is an old school board so the editing wasn't really a focus, as you said the spinning is the most important and thats what matters.
you are right we have to be careful, but IMO what we have to be careful is not to make a collab which follows a standard set by another board. because if you make a JEB style collab (example), ppl are just going to say this is an imitation of JEB. there are multiple paths to make a collab pro, we have to pick the correct one

hmm it was self-deprecating and in that humor it showed how old (hence foundation) this board is.
ok what I mean we didnt really know what to expect in terms of spinning quality for UPSB 1st, so editing wasn't really a focus. Because IMO if your editing is better than your spinning, you're in big trouble. so if we're confident that the spinning is going to be great, we can work on editing more.

music choice didn't seem to be a problem for me, yes, it wasn't high powered, screaming in your face exciting, but it was a steady paced, still moving forwards kind of music
but yes, granted, editing could have been better, but wasn't the worse -

For fun stuff there is basically no rules. If it's funny or cool it has a chance. Spinning a non pen object is a perfect example for the fun stuff video. -
