botting is a form of popping yes, but most poppers combine it with other elements -

poreotix are better but they're not that good of a team. and all of the poppers in it are better on their own. example: Dumbo

who said i hate them? they're all great dancers, but their crew is all hype. compared to legitimate, competetive collegiate teams, they're nothing. when they go to competitions, they enroll exhibition only, because they can't COMPETE with real teams, and generally only unexposed people few them in such a false godly status.
and " the middle guy did an awesome poping session thingy" sounds pretty unexposed to me. -

Hey shadowserpant do you have any videos of you popping?
i've been poppping for about 6 months now not very good, but i'm mostly interested in freestyling and battling. Any tips?
Also any good songs to pop to? I mostly listen to funk like zapp and roger but anything is good. -

i don't yet, im just not confident enough atm, i still have things to work on
um, learn your hits, learn all the different substyles because when you get good at them, they start to merge together. waving generally looks noobish unless you get good enough to lag parts of it and do unique things.
force levels. that is, try to go up and down alot, it makes your dancing more dynamic. for example i got a move from my friend where he grabs his head on the left side with his right hand and then pulls it to the right, then waves his left hand up. this looks nice in itself but you can make it "bigger" in a sense by going to the right AND bending your knees, so you're in what feels like an awkward crouching position. most people ignore crouching, and you shouldnt.
learn how to ride different beats. in complex songs, there's lyrics, bass, snares, and sometimes other random instrument melodies. when a song is playing, some of these are more apparent than others. sometimes the lyrics hit a long high note, or a very clear piano melody starts in the back. when that happens, you should switch to those rhythms, and then back. this of course is for songs you know. for songs you don't know, for a battle or something, you should take a few moments to analyze the beat pattern, and as you're dancing pay attention to variations and try to anticipate them the next time around. this is known as musicality, and will get you alot of respect.
i said learn your hits, but dont hit EVERYTHING. likewise, don't hit nothing. hits on beats can be replaced by speed changes, like, speeding up for a split second on the snare and then slowing back down, or other simple movements.
for example, on this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CazhoE1TyWI
at 0:15, there's two quick snares and a bass, and the snare line continues. i freestyled this with my friend once and instead of trying to hit all of those, i just, from a standing position, bent my right elbow on the first snare, my left elbow on the second, raised my chest on the bass, and hit my chest into an arm wave on the last snare. and then stopped with a hit on the next one.
yeah, little things like that. basically you dont want to get too repetitive.
oh and my friend told me something that helped me, he said, "you are an object, and you are controlling an object"
basically you should act like either someone's controlling you (i.e. the music), you're controlling yourself, or you're controlling something.
most poppers get the concepts of the first two pretty simply. but the last one alot of people ignore. here's an example from mr fantastic:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlDAgZO2ZDM
right at 3:24 you can see him start some imaginary pole isolations.
uh, he's a contortionist too, so there's no point trying to copy his other stuff xD
of course the whole object manipulation thing is usually alot more subtle, this was just to illustrate the point. there's actually a much better example earlier where he pretends to swallow some air or something and it turns into a wave.
as for songs, i like anything from la roux (colourless colour, i'm not your toy, bulletproof)
well this is good for really newschool popping:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xkOoAXuDzg
for an example of musicality, by 1:29, you should KNOW that that is going to happen because it already did twice. a simple body vibration or something would cover that and look perfect.
and if you like funk try Freestylers - Push Up -

Wow Shadow, thanks for the very detailed post I'm not too fond of those La roux songs but ill give them a try anyway
