Anyone know of any good ways to cover your desk to protect the desk from pen drops and dull the sound? I'm currently using some brown table mat which doesn't work too well when it comes to dulling the sound but does its job of protecting the desk.

I don't really want to use a towel as I find it rather...ugly.

What I did is bought a huge pack of poster boards and cut them to fit my table before taping it on with packing tape, makes good notes for when you want to write something down quick or want to sketch something, when it's full or getting grimy you just add another layer over it. =]

I use just sewing fabric. i fold it one time and that seems to dull the sound pretty well.

Hmm, any specific fabric in general?

Not sure what color to get either. Something that provides nice contrast with my skyblue + white SX.

Light-ish brown is always a nice color IMO.

I was thinking that too. But I'm not sure what type of fabric I should get. Needs to be thick enough to absorb impact and dull sound. Recommendations?

The poster board idea is nice but doesn't dull sound.

I don't really know anything about fabrics, but I'm guessing it doesn't really matter. You could just get a big piece of fabric and fold it enough I guess, but it might be a little thick? Idunno. I'm thinking about getting fabric too, but I'm still not sure. :/

you might want to change the color though, I've heard people criticizing your spinning as ugly partly because of the background

It's a rather pukey looking green but no worries vic, your spinning makes up for the bg color.

I'm just afraid I'll buy fabric that doesn't dull sound very well. I'll go check out some shops later.

hm, maybe a piece of a cheap yoga-mat?

i think there are a lot of colours and the material is some kind of gum.

You should try use this(the black pieces on table). I forgot what it was called exactly, but it's foam. There are people who use it to make hand craft such as flowers. You may find this used in some kids' products. Available in many colors so you can choose which match for your mod color. and it's durable(not easy to tear) and easy to clean(though i'm not sure how, maybe use water). In the photo i was using 4 pcs of A4 size(for easy to bring). You probably can find it sold in 1 LARGE piece instead of A4 size for your table. If you want you can use A4 size and mix with different colors. It works great to reduce noise(the hard sound of heavy tip knock on table), protect the tip(s) of your mod and works as great background for video filming(many color choice, including white). And it's not expensive. happy.gif

edit: well, i'm not sure but it looks like(from photo) the interior of UPSB pencase, not very sure since i don't have one.

I was thinking that but yoga mats seem quite pricey in general.

    @cyshing
Ooh, that looks like a pretty good idea. I'll take a look at walmart/target once I get the chance.

well for casually spinning and stuff, I use a white towel, which is indeed fairly ugly. but for filming, i just stick some light brown charcoal paper over the towel so it doesn't look like butt, and yet noise is reduced just as well.

I have most of my work table covered. Here are my thoughts.

Regular cloth usually does not do a good job of muffling the sound, unless you have a thick piece of cloth. The key for sound proofing seems to be using flexible material that has air layer between the top of the material and the table. I personally use kitchen drawer liners.

However, the second problem I encountered was texture. Being in an office space, where I need to occasionally share my keyboard with coworkers for pair programming (that means the keyboard has to slide easily), I can't use foam or kitchen drawer liner because they are too grippy.

My solution was to use a mix of cloth and liner. I use two layers or liners sandwiched between two layers of black spandex (this gives a clean look and smooth feel that hasn't had any coworkers complain). Spandex also works very well with optical mice...some cloths I used before didn't work very well due to their texture.

My desk isn't big, so I just use a folded white T-shirt for the part of the desk that is clear. The sound is really muffled, but it works pretty well protecting-your-mods-when-they-drop wise. You could experiment with cloth, layer it a bit more, etc.I simply fold the sleeves in, and do a half-fold. That's about four layers.

    Yep, cardboard works the best.
I use a box cover that's cut to a square.
    It's reversible and easily replaceable.
