Serious Discussion / homophobia

    For example:
    Justin Bieber
    Okay, everyone's heard of him.
Most Teenage Guys say "He's Gay"
Most Teenage Girls say "OMFG I LOVE HIM" and fantasize about fucking him.

Often teenage guys think something's gay because it's slightly metrosexual/girls like it.
same thing happened with the twilight series.

But just because someone sounds like a guy is supposed to fucking sound before their voice cracks does not make them gay.
IMO, this is just displaying a superficial knowledge about singing and music.
Do I like his music? Not really. Do I think he's gay? No.

Honestly, Being a steriotypical Gay nowadays means you like almost anything that girls like
    EG
A guy likes decorating, does that make him gay? No.
A guy can be as manly as Mr. T and be gay.
    Now discuss

Brilliant, i was gonna make a thread on homophobia. Please change the title and just use that as a little story?

People so oftenly are homophobic. They use gay as a negative term, when its something the person cant change (they cant change how they feel)

Oh my god youre so gay - whats wrong with that?
Oh my god youre so black - holy fuck racist go to prison

Is it not the same principals?

I dont really like his music, but i stick up for him when people are like hahahha justin biebers gay lololol ._____.

I consider myself metrosexual, and if anyone asks if im gay, i say yeah just to see their reaction, then i can whip them for being homophobic.

(got me in trouble once, i stood up against a teacher when someone said 'gay' negatively)

I don't don't like him. I don't care about him. What I don't like is the hype about and around him.

I don't care about the hype. What I don't like are people who talk about the hype.

When people say he's gay odds are they don't mean he's homosexual

as unfortunate as it may be, gay is just an empty derogatory term, like retarded

Yeah but they had to have some base. And people get worked up over that.

But in the words of one, very intelligent YouTube user, "when did homosexuals decide that they have exclusive rights to the word 'gay'?"

Not necessarily ... Gay could just be a retort to anything someone dislikes. Die in call of duty? That was fucking gay. Bad episode of your favorite show? GAY!

Well that's like saying it's selfish for people to want "retarded" to be used only for mentally handicapped people ... I think there's merit to it, if you associate anything bad with "retarded" you're clearly insulting REAL retarded people in a roundabout way.

Like for example if everyone started saying "tall" as an insult even when it doesn't make sense ... if I die in halo and say "you're just tall" or something, then clearly in my mind tall is a negative thing, so it's insulting tall people

So it's an interesting point that the YouTube user made, I don't think it's valid per se

it's like someone whose name is Dick or Gay or something liek that

even though their name is proper and therefore carry no meaning, it's still associated with real words.

    You contradict yourself.
Retarded could just be an adjective for anything someone dislikes. I'm sure a good amount of people that use "gay" as an insult/retort also dislike homosexuals, are these people clearly insulting REAL gay people?

    Not necessarily.
Basically, yes. Technically, no: anybody can make up any meaning for a word because nobody can stop them (obviously). Maybe they just liked the sound of the word "retarded" and wanted to use it as an insult, just because "retarded" is a medical term doesn't mean it can't have another meaning.

Arguing otherwise would require making assumptions about someone's true thoughts. Which remain unknown.

Sorry if what I'm saying doesn't make sense; I'm really drowsy right now.

calling someone gay/something gay isn't just an empty derogatory remark when you say it to someone gay. (especially if they haven't come out yet)

    That's my point ...

That's a case of the person on the receiving end interpreting a different meaning than the person intended.

Like if someone is short and really feel bad about it, and I say "you have a short temper" (not meaning to call them short) and they get upset about it.

i mean.... not sure where this conversation is heading but here's my 2 cents and a bit

so the word "gay" used as a comment on something negative probably stems from the previous stigma attached to homosexuality
prior the current era, homosexuality was concidered crude/immoral whatever, but basically, bad
same could be said with other derogatory terms like nigger (exuse me, if anyone maybe offended)
probably they (homosexuals) will take offense because of the original meaning attached to homosexuality being attached to the word gay (used in a negative sense)

now to what i think is on topic....

hold that thought, the ads by google on the bottom of this thread are for "gay club" and "chat gay" etc.
    i find it rather amusing

anyway, i'm back (from chat gay?)
... brain isn't working, might come back later

The problem is the two are inherently intertwined. The reason "gay" is an insult/politically incorrect is because of homophobia.

This is clearly seen because being gay is just an attribute of a person, like being tall or liking pizza, yet neither of those are common insults, because there's no stigma associated with that.

  17. Shadowserpant
    Date: Sat, Jun 5 2010 18:35:42

the origin maybe, but not regarding the people who use it daily. at least not all of them. that's why i don't worry about it. while the word may have been created out of homophobia, i don't believe it's used in the same respect.

  18. strat1227
    Date: Sat, Jun 5 2010 18:41:46

Yep, very true. But the problem comes with association: it's turned into Faggot and homo and everything else, it links homosexuality with the negative connotation with the insult of "gay" or "faggot"

even though people don't actually mean homosexual when they call someone a faggot, they're still disrespecting homosexuals

Thant being said, it's a hard habit to break dry.gif

no, only if you have a problem with others doing it

My cousin is homosexual, and hes cool. Most gays are really nice and cool people, fun to hang around. But when I think of 2 guys making out or having sex, I instantly get freaked out and grossed out. Am I homophobe? and I have a problem with gays having sex or making out.....

This line is what makes someone homophobic or not.

neXus thinks the idea is gross, that just means he's not homosexual. Kirby objects to the idea of other people doing it, that makes him a homophobe.

As long as you don't care if others do it, you're not a homophobe, even if you think it's gross or whatever

Lol that still sounds like a phobia, but in my opinion as long as you don't object to it it's not homophobia

but imagine if someone said "im fine with spiders as long as i don't hear, see, or know about them" that'd be arachnophobia lol

I think Strat is right, as long as you dont have a problem with OTHERS doing it, its no big deal. If you treat gay's the same, your fine.

Me being Gay, i dont take offence to people saying "That's so gay!" I've just gotten used to it. :3

It's so derogatory, people have just started taking it as the norm. Even homo's.
