"This can't be real" was my first thought. Then I checked the source: The Guatemalan government. This sinkhole appeared last sunday in a street intersection of Ciudad de Guatemala. Just looking at the photo gives me vertigo.

A sinkhole is a natural depression caused by the removal of underground soil by water. Usually, it happens when the substrate is formed by limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds or any other rock that is easily eroded by water streams. The process could be slow, but sometimes the land just cracks open without notice. In this case, it happened suddenly, swallowing an entire house. The cause: Massive underground water torrents created by tropical storm Agatha.

Amazing, isn't it? I can see why the article calls it the gates of hell. Looks like if you fall through you'll either wind up in hell or the other side of the Earth.

You'll fall into a large body of water and eventually drown because there's no way out.

If only Team Rocket knew how to make a trap like that.

Sink holes happen quite randomly, yes. There's a whole process to it so it's not entirely random but yeah...it just appears there.

I believe it takes a couple hours. I'm not absolutely sure. I just looked up sink holes when I heard about this and read a bit about it. I don't think it takes a whole month but sink holes don't appear that quickly either. They also result in very few deaths--only a handful.

Youtube has some pretty cool footage of some. There's one sink hole that's in the middle of a lake and its slowly drinking it up. Other sink holes arent as cool but pretty damn massive.
