UPSB v3
General Discussion / Pen Spinning - Commonwealth Games
-
Date: Thu, Jun 3 2010 12:40:21
As many of you know the commonwealth games in Dheli will be starting soonish.
I know in 2008 there was an Asia Cup held. There are many boards that are not able to compete in The main international tournaments, but rather than having all the x boards who did not get into the tournament compete (whcih i think is a pretty good idea) i also like the idea having a commenwealth pen spinning games akin to the Asia Cup.
This will be a team tournament, kinda similar to the WC but with some differences that im planning. This is all open to discussion and change. I really dont want this to be that long but we'll see.
What - Pen Spinning Commonwealth Games
When - ASAP when all teams have been organized. Hopefully Begining of Next Month (July)
Who - Any pen spinning group part of the commonwealth
Why - To Allow smaller communities compete at an international level
How - Using Mainly a Pool system
- Each country should have a MINIMUM 4 Spinners, but MAXIMUM 6 SPINNERS
================================================================================
-Song has suggested a WT 1 v 1 games. I feel this is possible, but i still like the idea of team battles. So suggest what you feel is wanted. it may even be possible to have both.
================================================================================
-Battles with always be judged in pools, never by 1 vs 1 elimination. Using this method we do not need seeds, and lets say theres 8 commenwealth boards competing each round they will be ranked from 1-8.
-There will be 2 themes each pool, 1 artistic and 1 difficult.
-Point system will be used as seen in the WC but additionally we will have side games that can be used to add to the teams total score. These side games are a bit more specific.
For example, one side game might be "Best Copy Combo" where we will choose a combo to copy or "Best use of DC Comssa" and the top 3 or 4 teams attain additional points. As you can see these themes do not really fit into artistic and difficuly (although DC commssa spinning is difficult the win can still be awarded to the more artistic combo) Thes side games are optional, but of course highly recommended if teams are competing seriously.
- Points will automatically be taken away if a team does not submit etc.
================================================================================
I require a submission of all teams for the following:
=========================================================
-A list of artistic themes a team would like to see in the tournament.
-A list of Tehcnical themes a team would like to see in the tournament.
-A list of Side Games a team would like to see in the tournament.
I need these by 1 July.
Feel free to make these what you would like. It does not have to be the themes seen in the
world Cup. These themes will have an official vote to find out which will be showing up
in the tournament.
=========================================================
-An Official List of Their Team
-An elected Judge to place into the judging team. You will not be sending this person's name to me,
and instead will be sending it to another person to handle the judging team.
I will be revealing to avoid rage on the judges etc.
(however if you do have a proper argument witht het judges I will allow you to converse with them where their names would be hidden)
I need this by Monday 5th of July
===========================================================
The first day of the tournament (announcement of the video's) will then begin shortly after that. Most likely
12th of July
where the announcments of the elected first roudn theme will be released.
============================================================
Tournamenet Stucture:
There will be 4 Rounds ( i may extend to 5) in this tournament.
Each round (every 2 weeks) will consist of:
1. A single Artsitic Theme
2. A Single Technical Theme
3. A Freeform Doubles Match OR A freeform Singles match
The third battle will alternate each round between a Doubles match, and A Single Free form match. So round 1 its a doubles match
round 2 its a singles, round 3 doubles round 4 singles.
The teams will then be ranked from 1 to 6 on how they do in the round.
The optional side games video's will also be due on this day. Only 1 spinner per sidegame per team is allowed. The teams will then
be ranked from 1 to [amount of teams participating] to earn additional points for their theme.
==================================================
If you feel against this or would like to suggest an addition please say so.

but seriously, i know UK has PSUK, not sure who is at a strong competitive level yet though
not quite sure how the elimination/progression of rounds are going to be, but i think if there are atleast an even number of boards, it would be fine.

sorry I actually didn't know what the commonwealth was? And sorry I wasn't sure about Penja. -

The Commonwealth generally refers to a collection of states previously part of the British Empire.

PSUK has 3 decent or above spinners that I know of : Ivesound, Mantis and Prince.
i think the commonwealth games has strong historical ties and thats why it exists, not sure if it is really relevant to pen spinning though -
Date: Fri, Jun 4 2010 09:09:55
well its really just a friendly way of battling other boards but within a theme. of course im trying to say we are better bc we are commenwealth, but like i said its akin to the asia cup. In asia cup only asians were able to enter, hence why minwoo from UPSB etc. The whole idea was that "hey i wonder who the best asian spinner is? " etc.
America although they were, is not part of the commonwealth full stop.
Id be happy to even just have 4 communities. But having 5 or 6 would be awesome. Just need to get responses from all communities. -
Date: Fri, Jun 4 2010 11:10:34
More commonwealth stuffs for the UK to be defeated by its old empire?!
-
Date: Fri, Jun 4 2010 12:39:45
so this is like the asian cup except we're using people within commonwealth?
-
Date: Fri, Jun 4 2010 12:54:42
very nice idea. a scaled down tourney for commonwealth country communities?
i may be able to get people to participate, BUT, whats the ideal number for each team? -
Date: Fri, Jun 4 2010 16:04:58
nice idea,but i think we should make it like wt,not team battle
i dun think we will have enough team or country's community to take part -
Date: Sat, Jun 5 2010 02:45:03
@Springfield
ideally a team should have minimum 4, and maximum 6. i think ill place a restriction in that a team member cannot compete more than once in a round.
@Song
while having a WT structure to determine whos the bset spinner among the commonwealth would be awesome, i probably wont be able to follow the WT structure with 1 v 1 elimniation. I wanted to completely not use a 1 v 1 system within this tournament.
i will have to incorperate this in a seperate event in which i only take the top 50%, or even smaller top 25% of spinners within a pool. This again rejects the need for seeds, and reduces time of solving the best spinner much faster.
however, this can add a bit of confusion. it places 2 major different events within this tournament. I cannot just change this completely to a non-team structure because that completely negates the whole point of this tournament... so that we all can compete.
With my tournament structure, teams will never be elminated. So we can have a tournament length of infinite, or very short length or 2 even 1 round xD. The amount of teams i get to participate hence is irrelevant, as the amount of rounds is independant on amount of teams. -

Although it is just an example, I don't like the idea of "Best use of" because not everyone will have that specific mod. Also, people use different parts for their mods, so judging with a specific mod in mind could be difficult to score. For example, one person's DC Comssa might have signo tips and Dr. Grip grips, while another person's DC Comssa has anyball grips and uses a Miffy and Melanie body. firstly for specific pen i expect everyone to have a trust system in that they dont cheat and put extra weights in their pens. Of course i will ask each time what common pens they heave, mx, commssa, etc b4 doing that game so that we dont have teams that cannot spin bc they dont have that pen.
I can reduce the team requirement to 3-6. It all depends but i need feedback from the other countries. Im working on MY and UK atm as well as askiing zombo for a prize. ;D

Does each community has to provide judges? If no need, then i think MYPSC can meet the minimum of 4 a team.
BTW, i don't understand what means "a team member cannot compete more than once in a round". How can a team compete twice in a round?
And, each community send only a team right? -

No im planning to get external judges from non commonwealth boards so there is no bias and so everyone can compete. ^^QUOTE (cyshing @ Jun 9 2010, 11:41 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>BTW, i don't understand what means "a team member cannot compete more than once in a round". if there is a round where the theme is speed, and creativity, for example, i would not let a spinner spin in both catagories.QUOTE (cyshing @ Jun 9 2010, 11:41 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>And, each community send only a team right?
yes ^^.
Its great if you guys can compete. Im going to need a medium/team leader that will handle talking to me and ensuring that the rules are understood and followed. Cyshing, im

Date: Thu, Jun 10 2010 16:48:01
yay i got prince from PSUK.
@Cyshing
When i say i never wanted 1 v 1 elimniatoin i really meant i would never want a 1 on 1 match..
Then how will this work?
Im planning on always using a pool system. For example, lets say the theme is Creativity, the 6 teams will send in their vids and all videos will be placed from 1 - 6.
Why?
one of the reasons of 1 v 1 system is that it made judging a lot easier. however, bc we are never going to have a pool of more than 6, it is much more plausible to
give a ranking from 1 - 6 than it would be for a pool structure with like 80 people in it.
1. This reduces the need for unfair matches. For example, it may be the case that a strong team B will always verse a weaker team D, or E. At the same time a strong team C, may always be versing a strong team A. The strong team B then gets all the points, where as A and C will just level out and so B gets 1st place even though A and C are at the same level.
2. While it still may possible to create fair matches using seeds, it adds another dimension to the tournament. And seeds are never 100% accurate wheres as
having a pool system always has sound fairness.
The problem will be ranking the teams, but im positive i can get enough judges to rank fairly. Clearly if there is a problem or objection im willing to allow the reevalution of the rankings for a round by possibly using other extra judges if neccessary.
The games may have a 1 v 1 in the finals, where it is clear only 2 teams can make it to 1st/2nd place but that will be later on.
================================================================================
==========
Btw, if u object please feel free to debate. The whole point is for everyone to enjoy the rule set. ^^
and while everyone is here, feel free to suggeset side game compeitions. I think if every team sends in 1 side game compeition that would be the fairest way to choose the sidegames. -
