Manipulative Arts / Weapon tricks
Staffs and fans- Nothing more than giant pens?

Well, I recently started pen spinning, and I found it very interesting because the basics are so similar to staff fighting or fan fighting. Once you get into the more advanced of weapon training and pen tricks they begin to separate in similarity, but the main idea remains the same.
A monk practicing Fan Fighting
A staff form
Since in today's culture there is not much use for these antique weapons people practice these disciplines for the beauty more than self protection. I might upload some videos of myself with my fan and/or staff if I can find someplace where I can video tape it digitally. -

I've done some basics with staff and I was going to buy one, but unfortunately my friend who is doing this moved further from the city, so it is no longer possible to meet often.. And I don't really want to do this alone...

ahaha, that chinatown one, with the shaolin people, they're all from this one place that's on a side street off of main street in flushing
i used to go there when i was like in 6th grade, but i failed and had no time and my parents had no time to drive me there either so i stopped
that was a bit off topic, but anyway...
i don't really see how penspinnign and weapons are related
could you point out any specific tricks that may represent a weapon move in martial arts?
i guess you could say in the circular directions and such, but then that would make pen spinnign related to yoyoing and jump roping and etc...too
i dunno, i guess ps could be related to teh latter 2 as well, but just wondering if there are any weapon moves that obviously resemble a pen trick
i don't take martial arts anymore, and never did any with weapons anyway, so maybe it's just you who can see if seeing as how you actually practice it, but if you could elaborate moer, that'd be great -

Well, for one, in staffs a "flower" is alot like a charge then reverse charge and repeat. Fans has alot of twirling between the fingers when you get more advanced.

Jordan I know you like commenting on things, but don't comment on threads that haven't been comented on in awhile. For example, the last time someone posted (or commented) on this was over a year ago so don't say anything on it unless it is REALLY REALLY important. If your just going to say that playing with weapons is like suicide, then just don't post. Don't say somthing just to say it. Thanks -

In the past I have done Bo, Nunchucks, sword, balisong and various other knife spinning. My favorite is probably nunchucku's and I have invented many tricks over the years. I make mine from steal pipe with wooden broom handle hammered down in the middle. It fits very tight once inside you then saw the wood to be the same length as the metal pipe. Next take two metal screw eye hooks and screw them into the wood. Now attach two swivels and a chain (but honestly they work just as well without the swivels). This is a very heavy set up and you want to be an expert before you use it as if you miss you will do some damage. You can also cover with some foam (the stuff you put on pipes to keep them hot / cold) if you want. Even though they are heavy for an an old guy I am still pretty quick.
I really enjoyed Balisong but I have not been able to buy a knife for many years (probably about 15 years since I had one in my hand) if you know where you can get one in Canada would love to buy some. Knife spinning I still do occasionally and its a lot like pen sipinning (most moves work on a thin blade). You can also do a lot of continuous spins like indexaround spins (or what Kam used to call the toothbrush spin) especially if you have a wide edge on the knife between the handle and the blade. -
