Fundamental Tricks / How long did it take you to master the fundamentals?

So Far I've mastered Fingerpass, and I have the Thumbaround and fingerpass reverse down, but not fully mastered. -

I agree, you probably haven't mastered fingerpass hehehe, thats one of the hardest tricks to master (from fundamentals for sure)

Uhh I think he means to be able to do fingerpass consistently, like without dropping it, though that's not the right idea for mastering a trick.

You guys just master the trick before learning other tricks?
After almost 2 months of penspinning, I would say I mastered only thumbaround xD
edit - more accurate description of how can I do fundamentals:
ta - Almost perfect (nothings perfect.)
ta rev - suck at it, I can do it like 49/50 but it just sucks
charge - never tried to learn more than two revolutions, its not needed for any combo so I am just waiting for the charge improve by doing all the charge tricks. Can do only in 12 and 23
charge rev - can do palm down, but not in normal position
sonic - 34 and 23 is really good, my sonic rise looks pro, but I screw up 34-12 sometimes
sonic reverse - only 12, doesn't even do proper revolution
fingerpass - I never tried to learn it
fingerpass reverse - can't even do it properly
well I still don't think I am that bad. I am average, yes, but for example charge with more than two revolutions and fingerpasses are absolute unnecessary imo. I can for example say my twisted sonic is perfect, although it contains both charge and pass (but in small amount) -

i don't think that it'll look too good in a combo so i dunno if i really wanna even bother learning this

but i don't really consider to have mastered a trick by your standards
i'll say that i mastered a trick when the trick is smooth and i can get it about 95-99% of the time
oh, and upside down too, but only for certain tricks (ex. sonic variations, charge, fingerpass, etc..) -

It helps if you learn the charges before sonics, cause then you know the hand motion.

actually I lurned the sonics before the charge and it helps Imo cuz whilst lurning the sonic you may screw up and accidently do a charge...

well i had learned the charge adn then sonic and i had no problems

Hmm I see people are using the word "master" as synonymum with "learn"..
When I say master, I mean I can do the trick perfectly, so good that noone can see any mistake in it.
I know my fingers are not good at anything compared to you people, but it's just impossible to master fingerpass in few days (unless you're REALLY talented). -

When you consider the bakfall as one of your fundamental, and it's reverses, its also takes a month to learn,
so for me it takes a year to learn those fundamentals. -

There is a significant difference between being able to do fingerpass and mastering fingerpass.
Here is a video of a mastered fingerpass. Can't do it that fast? Then you have not mastered fingerpass. -

Fingerpass normal T1 - 12 - 23 - 34 > Fingerpass rev 34 - 23 - 12 -T1 (Don't know the specific name for this trick),this took me 2 years to make it smooth,and I've been spinning this trick for 4 years. -

Charge - After understanding what it was, I trained myself and my muscles to understand the way the pen moved when I manually turned it in my hand. A few days
Charge Reverse - Same with the Charge but a little bit longer, was working the left side of my brain (think it's that side)
Finger Pass - It's a little bit choppy going in that direction because my fingers go short to long, about an hour to learn this after seeing my teacher in eighth grade do it with a yard stick.
Finger Pass reverse - 30 minutes
Thumbaround - Can barely do it, (year later)
Thumbaround Reverse - can't do it
Sonic - Over a year, well over a year.. -

Dude there are many tutorials on the thumbaround, watch a few then try it, eventually youll get it

What exactly IS mastered?
By mastered I look at it as you can use it perfectly in combobs and it's smooth, you can probably do it 95/100 times.

I think you're merging different concepts in one...
I divide the learning proccess in 4 steps.
1.See: once you've seen how it looks like (video or tutorial)
2.Do: once you've done it for the first time.
3.Do consistently without dropping (that's what this thread should be about)
4.Master: do it in a way that ANYONE can see any mistake in

Thumbaround - The trick that got me into pen spinning.
TA Reverse - took about one month to master this. Now it is second nature and harmonics are easy.
Sonic - about a month and a half to learn normal and reverse, about 5 months to get a clean continous harmonic. This was my favorite trick for a long time, and once i learned this, i felt comfortable moving to more advanced tricks like extended thumbarounds, shadows, thumbspins, twisted sonics..etc..
Finger Pass - this was easy to learn, and has been really hard to master. Same with reverse. They are both equally difficult to do consistently for me. For now....i can do them, no problem...and they've been as Slow and Choppy as they've been since the first day i picked up a writing utensil.
Charge - Just starting now to be able to do this with ease, way after learning other advanced tricks and combos. I think the charge is really easy for those that get it right in the beginning, and really difficult for those that learn it later on. My roommate is a drummer, and he had me try doing the charge with a drumstick and it was so much easier to do with something that big and heavy rather than my usual BiCtories.
Charge Reverse - Still cant do it consitently. -

I've seen a girl in my math class that have MASTERED fingerpass, and I mean it. She can do it really really really well, and plus her fingers is really really flexible, get it? So yeah, she can do it really really really fast, in fact she is the only person that I've seen MASTERED fingerpass. I can do all the fundamentals, except fingerpass, and it is hard. Oh yeah, there is a sonic reverse, you forgot to mention that. There is a reverse for all 4 fundamentals, but sonic also have an inverse. I don't know if other fundamentals have an inverse.

Charge-learned it on my own after seeing a friend do a sonic, so i don't know
Charge reverse - never attempted (well a few times) but gave up and relearned it easily after 3 months of spinning when i realized that is a fundamental
Sonic - whole day, master took like 3-4 days

THumbaround - first try (after watching tut vid that is)
thumbaround reverse - if you haven't noticed, i have had a habit of trying it for a short time and then just learning more tricks and trying it sometimes until my finger dexterity is developed from other tricks. therefore i don't know how to count it, because the amount of time i put into practicing was only 10-15 min, but from the time i started (watching tut) to mastering TA harmonic was like 1-2 months i guess

I had to pratice for about 4-5 weeks until I mastered all fundemental tricks (except the fingerpass, I´m still workin on it^^)
But instead of the correct charge i first learned charge reverse because I watched some drummer do this trick and the did a charge reverse. but after another week of practice I also mastered the charge. -

Im a 1 and a half year spinner yet I am comparable to a 5 month spinner, tkae you pick.. =] I'm more expereienced though and have a better understanding for the tricks... so my difeceincy is the fact that I got into modding very late, and that I'm to lazy to sit down and make my self learn new tricks, so basicilly 3 months for each tricks =D

Cuz' i've lost my drive, and all the tricks im lewarning are basically minicombos and all those hand wraps etc. combined with homework and social life.... not a lot of time to practice and "master" the trick... it took me 7 months to master back falll... 5 months for the shadow.... if you practice a lot you'll have it down a lot faster though ;D

Hm... I taught myself TA so I don't know how long it took me to learn it, same with Charge. It just kinda developed along my elementary years.
Fingerpass was a really easy trick to learn but really hard trick to master.
Sonic took me about a week to master. It was easy, once I did it one time I could do it again. -

Sonic - Fooled around with it for over a year and couldn't figure it out even with tutorials. Then I found the old UPSB tutorial which had a different method than the pressure method. Using that method I learned it in a day

but i was at 6 months, so i had some experience already. and yeah, some people have a knack for pen spinning. like seven, that guy came out of nowhere. I guess some people just get it faster than others

I have yet to master any of the fundamentals. By master, I mean perform the trick consistently without fail.

Finger Pass - I did these in class, before I knew about penspinning. Not fluid yet, and my 23 > 34 > 23 is choppy.
Finger Pass reverse - Same as fingerpass, but I'm actually smoother in my reverse for some reason. Still not smooth like Bonkura though, let alone Eso.
Thumbaround - About 1-2 days of practice. I started in the middle of the night, and got the hang of it, but I got used to it after doing it for a day.

I think if it says "master" it means you're able to do the trick at least consistently with all the common finger combinations. "Sonic" is the fundamental, not "Sonic 23." Even though the "23" is assumed in breakdowns, Sonic 34 still a fundamental, lol. -

Maybe the type of pen used would really affect learning rates? (Example: a person probably wouldn't ever master fundamentals using a normal pilot pen or one of those expensive silver ones) Listing the pen you used might make the info more useful...

I used a sharpened pencil yesterday when I started PenSpinning, after hours of practice on TA, I saw a video on TA Reverse. I tried to do it but after a few tries my Pencil snapped because of the pressure.
Now I use a normal ball point pen with a clip at the end and a rubber grip near the tip.
I still find Sonic quite hard.
It's my 2nd day anyway, maybe I'll get it after a few months or so. -

Hmmm, it could be the misunderstanding, what people mean by mastering a trick. I think that people have different opinions, how fast the fingerpass should. It affects, when people say they have mastered tricks Or it could be matter of training... If you train several hours in the three days, I think you can master the trick... I personally rarely spin over 1 hour a day

I think it took me a whole week to master the ta, sonic and its reverses and another week to learn the charge, infinity and the fingerpass.
its kinda funny that i can do ta and ta reverse but never really learned how to do the ta harmonic.
ive been trying this one for almost one year or more and iam still not able to perform it consistently, even though i do this trick everyday and have no further problems with other tricks. -

Before school started this year (Aug 25 I think), I had mastered the thumb around. Three months later and I've learned:
- TA rev (with a clunky TA harmonic)
- Sonic 23/34
- Sonic rev 23/34 (rise/fall harmonic as well)
- Charge 23 (my 34 clunky and my 12 is reversed)
- Oh, a very non-smooth fingerpass
So, I average just over one trick a month. Not too bad, but not really good. -

see thats a bad thing that you did when you got the muscle memory. like im guessing you had trouble with sonic and twisted sonic at first because you learned sonic bringing your fingers together.
try learning the reverse charge... its very simple all you do is move your index finger out and bring middle finger in. take 1 day to just practice the motion of the reverse charge by holding the top of the pen and flicking your hand to get the correct motion and see how long it takes for you to get a fluent reverse charge. -

well with reverse charge you push your index finger out. but with the regular charge you move your middle finger in and just do that only while moving your hand a little bit -
