Welcome to the Bic rsvp 153 tutorial!

This pen mod is an alternative to the “retractable MX” (created by PDS), the “Monami 153S retract” (created by mwahaha91), and the “153 W retractable” (created by CLUBMA). The biggest difference is that this mod uses a bic round stic body which is round instead of the hexagonal body. Speaking from my own personal preference I never did like spinning the hexagon bodied mods so this was a fitting substitute retractable mod.

While this mod is not entirely original I don’t think ive seen anyone make one before. I did search around before posting this tutorial and the closest thing I could find was Voltaire’s “Bic MX” but his wasn’t retractable and mine is slightly different overall as well.

Anyway, there’s no real exciting background story as to why I made this mod…just thought about making it during one of my lazy Sundays when I needed an excuse to not do homework. I made the mod a few months back but never made a tutorial due to lack of time during the semester.

The Bic rsvp 153 was easy for me to make but nowadays everything seems pretty easy to make hahahah.gif, so judging from an average modder’s perspective this mod is probably moderately difficult due to the cut required for the monami mechanism…other than the 1 difficult cut, everything else should be very easy.

I assume no responsibility if you are careless and sustain eye damage or dismember your finger/hand from using the dremel. Remember, you can’t spin pens without fingers. ph34r.gif

    Some basic stats:
-18cm (although you can adjust it a little from the backcap)
-COP = COG (if you made it right)
    -lighter than an MX
    -looks like a pen
-Total cost is about $4 (give or take depending on how much rsvp/bic/signo pens are in your area)

    So let us begin…

    1.
    http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/634/bic153001ue9.jpg

    Pens you need:
    1x Bic round stic
    2x rsvp fine
    1x signo pen
    1x monami 153

    2.
    http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/9599/bic153002lj2.jpg

    Parts of the pens required:
    1: Monami spring and mechanism
    2: Signo metal tip
3: Bic round stic body and front plug
4: 2x rsvp grip, 1x rsvp cap, 1x rsvp inktube

    3.

Take the bic round stic body, remove the backplug, get a dremel and cut a hole to the measurements in the picture. The hole can be larger than 1cm, but if it’s smaller then the monami mechanism might not fit. Also make sure the hole is wide enough so the monami mechanism can fit.

!!!This is the most difficult part of the mod so take your time to do it correctly!!! The rest of the tutorial is a cake walk.

    4.

Take the front plug, remove the ink and cut the front plug to the measurements specified in the picture.

    5.

Take the original rsvp inktube and shorten it to 10.1cm (you can make it longer if you want and then tweak the length at the end…its always easier to shorten the length rather than extending the length). Wrap tape around the inktube 4cm from the tip to push against the spring.

    6.

Assemble as shown in the picture.

    What it looks like assembled

!!!Take this time to make sure the monami mechanism works properly before proceeding!!!

    7.

Wrap teflon tape around the front plug section. Screw on the signo tip after. The signo tip will not cover the front plug entirely but that is okay because grip will cover the exposed teflon tape section anyways!

What it looks like after signo tip attached

    8.

Assembly is pretty obvious from here on out. I was lazy and didn’t feel like de-clipping the rsvp cap (don’t be lazy like me).

    Final Product!

    Trouble Shooting Questions:
    Q: I don’t have dremel / I don’t know how to use a dremel / I’m scared to use a dremel
    A: Well, you’re SOL.

…just kidding. Bic round stic plastic is soft so you probably could carve out a hole with an xacto knife. You can also heat an xacto knife with a lighter and melt a hole (this will ruin the blade though).

    Q: UCPSB bic?
A: If you’re asking about them then you already missed the free ‘ucpsb bic give-away’ hosted by Eso.

Q: Can I use HGG tips?
A: Maybe, but HGG tips are kind of small and might not screw onto the bic front plug. Also the balance of the pen would change (for the worse).

Q: I didn’t cut the hole 1.9cm from the back, am I screwed?
A: No, but you will likely have to tweak the length of the inktube to compensate for changes in length

Q: I followed your tut exactly but the monami mechanism wont retract all the way!
A: Kind of depends how far you screwed on the signo tip…I put a lot of teflon tape on so likely if you put less teflon tape the tip would have screwed on a millimetre or two farther in and as a result the inktube would be “too long” and not retract all the way. The best solution to this is to simply tweak the inktube to the correct length to accommodate any difference from your mod from mine.

Q: How much trial-and-error / how many pens did you destroy for you to make this mod?
A: I design most of my mods step by step so I made this on my first try. Also, I don’t exactly have unlimited UCPSB bics so I couldn’t afford to screw up.

…Yes, I was smart enough to use a UCPSB bic on my first try making this mod. No, you shouldn’t do the same.

Q: There are lots of spelling and grammar errors. You suck.
A: I’m sorry, I forgot the internet was serious business. Also I just pumped out 3 tutorials in 2 days: pictures, text and all. I’m tired so you can bugger off.

    Q: Happy new years!
A: Thanks, happy new years to you too.

Just get something long @ skinny to push the Monami mechanism out. Unscrew the front end then shove whatever you have through the back to push the mechanism right out the front.

to get the m153 mechanism out i just sorta pushed down on teh two pieces that are sticking out of the monami pen, and then just sorta do a mixture of pulling it out from the back and pushing it up from the two pieces that are being held down

how do you cut the rsvp inktube without it exploding? 10.1 centimeters on a full tube would mean cutting into ink. whats your method?

lets cut into ink, what a great idea thumb.gif

You will have to cut into the ink, or you can use an inktube from a different pen if you dont want to cut into the rsvp ink.

    Did you use a dremel?

  19. K4S
    Date: Fri, Jan 4 2008 17:06:35

I did use a dremel but that's only because it's my preferred tool. The bic body is made of soft plastic so you can use an xacto knife (heat optional) to make the cut.

How does the clicking mechanism work exactly.

  21. K4S
    Date: Tue, Jan 29 2008 04:09:19

Exactly like the monami 153 mechanism....except you cant push it from the back so you just use your nail to pull the lever thing down and it clicks into place. Push the lever thing in to un-retract it.

Hey, how come you don't have a second hold behind the main one so that the smaller 'fin' behind the larger 'fin' on the Monami mech can go in?

The monami barrel has 2 holes, 1 on top of the other. Your's only has one for the larger 'fin' to slide through.

Is it necessary to cut it? Where does the smaller fin go then?

  23. K4S
    Date: Mon, Sep 8 2008 08:04:12

you only need the 1 hole for the large fin to slide around. The small fin will "lock" the mechanism forward when you slide the big fin down...im not really sure why there is a large hole and a small hole in the regular monami 153...the small hole isnt even really used dunno.gif

Its for the smaller fin to go somewhere when the pen is not retracted. Where does the smaller fin go in your pen when it's not retracted?

ive always new about how the bic and 153 had very similar body.. just like how i spin the SPINMATIC by InhumanElmo.. feels like a round 153 but as a mechanical pencil =D so i use that for schol instead of having a spinning pen and a regular pencil to use sleep(1).gif
