Welcome to the Shaker Anyball Retractable Mechanical Pencil v2 (SAR MP v2) tutorial!
I wanted to try and remake this mod to look a little different and possibly a little smaller since the dr.grip tips were rather big. Here is what I came up with. However, the trade off for a better looking pencil was the fact that I had to use a different pencil altogether and therefore the shaker mechanism is a little stiffer and so you have to shake just a little harder to get lead out. The shaker piece is of course optional. When you push the back the writing tip comes out (where the lead comes out) from the main metal tip. Also the metal tip can screw on and off for easy disassembly .
I made this mod a couple days after I released the SARMPv1 tutorial, but I didn’t feel like making another tutorial for the v2 so soon (lazy). Sorry for the delay…well, not really but you know what I mean.QUOTEPlease understand that the shaker mechanism shifts the balance while you spin so this is not an ideal spinning mod but it spins better than a dr.grip shaker and still has the shaker mechanism which is exactly what I sought out to do.
This mod is not easy but not horribly difficult. If this is your first time modding, I recommend you try something easier than this mod. I assume you have moderately decent skill in modding and will be able to figure out any gaps I left. I also assume no responsibility if you are an idiot and hurt yourself trying to make this mod. Remember, you can’t pen spin without fingers.
Credit goes out to Pholord for coming up with the Anyball Retractable mechanism used in this mod.
Some basic stats:
-COG is about 1cm give or take a few mm from the COP. Further balance can be reached using fishing weights.
-length is 20cm
-lighter than the SARMPv1
-approximate cost is $18 (dr.grip shaker = 8, remedy pencil = 5, sunburst = 1.5, G2 = 2, anyball/profile = 1)
So let us begin…
1.
The pens you need:
1x dr.grip shaker
1x Staedtler remedy pencil
1x rsvp sunburst
1x profile/anyball pen
1x G2 pen
2.
Assemble the anyball retrac mechanism. In case you missed the link to Pholord’s tutorial, here it is again
2.5
Stuff a very small portion of tissue/paper into the anyball retractable mechanism. The reason for this is that once fully assembled when you shake the mod to get lead out you don’t want free lead in the tube to be flying up into the anyball retractable mechanism.
The white circle is the piece of tissue I placed in there that was compacted by the inktube. The black spec in the middle is where the lead will hit (thus blocking it from entering the anyball mechanism) as you shake the mod once complete.
3.
Instructions listed on the picture. Follow my measurements exactly unless you want to be stuck doing needless tweaking throughout my tutorial.
4.
Hurray for more measurements! The length of the ‘remedy pencil tube’ or the ‘rsvp inktube’ does not have to be exact but the overall should be as close to 16.2cm as possible! You might want to make it 16.5cm and at the end you can slowly shorten the length to fit your SARMPv2 perfectly (highly recommended!)
5.
Notice that I labelled the G2 thread sides a & b. Not critically important since either end will screw in but follow along for fun, mmkay?
The 1.1cm measurement is not that critical either but the 4.4cm measurement needs to be as close as possible!!
6.
Instructions stated in the picture. Notice the sides labelled a & b. The metal tip needs to be stuck inside the G2 threading VERY tightly! If you don’t listen to me now you will be seeking my “troubleshooting section†shortly after finishing my mod!
7.
The G2 section needs to be stuck on the sunburst VERY tightly. Again, if you don’t listen to me now you will be seeking my “troubleshooting section†shortly after finishing my mod! If the insert is longer than 3.1cm it might get crumbled by the G2 threading.
8.
Instructions listed 1 to 3, you can follow along with numbers, right?
What it should look like right before you put the anyball retrac mechanism on.
!!! If you did what I recommended and left the entire length of the pencil tubing 16.5cm you will now have to slowly shorten the length (by cutting) until the anyball retrac mechanism fits perfectly (no loose play in the mech pencil tube) !!! If you eff up the length you can always tweak the amount of tissue you put in the anyball mechanism to compensate for screwing up the pencil tube length.
Final Product!
Trouble Shooting Questions:
Q: Uh, so how does this mod work, the tip looks kind of different.
A: Push the back so the writing tip comes out of the metal tip, then continue pressing the back for lead or you can shake it for lead (recommended)
Q: When I push the back the G2 section on the front pushes forward off of sunburst body
A: The G2 section is not being held on tight enough…it really has to be stuck on there so the pencil mechanism/shaker mechanism can work properly.
Q: What did you mean when you said the insert length should be 3.1cm but then went on to say make it long enough so that the G2 section stays on.
A: I suppose I should have said make the width 3.1cm, but make the length long enough so that when you wrap it around the front of the sunburst body the excess paper will increase the circumference so the G2 section is held securely.
Q: when I push the back, the metal tip gets pushed out
A: Wrap more teflon tape around the metal threads and put the G2 threading on again. It really needs to be stuck on there like the G2 body section.
Q: What the shit, I cant get the G2 section or G2 threading to stay on as tightly as needed and they keep getting pushed out of place no matter what I try. I want an easy fix.
A: Well, if you really want you can use glue to hold the pieces in place but I really don’t recommend it due to the extra mess it makes, plus you cant take it apart, but it’s up to you.
Q: I followed the tutorial exactly but in the end I had to make my own small adjustments so everything fit perfectly. What the eff?
A: Well, I probably didn’t measure everything perfectly when writing this tutorial but for a pen(cil) mod of this skill level I assume you are capable of making small adjustments yourself if the measurements I stated aren’t 100% perfect.
Q: Why is it harder to shake to get lead out?
A: Because the remedy pencil was not made as a shaker pencil. It just so happens that it works as a shaker pencil by coincidence with some minor modding (a.k.a. my ingenuity )
Q: I want to make this mod but I don’t understand how it all works. Is it simpler to make than the SARMPv1?
A: I would say it’s about equal in how complicated it is compared to the SARMPv1. All the measurements I gave were the exact measurements you need…no need to understand anything ^^. If you do decide to make one I recommend making it without inserts just so you can see how it’s structured internally (and how well I designed it )
Q: When I push the back for lead the writing tip will come out but no lead will come out, why?
A: Well make sure there’s actually lead in the pencil…if this was the problem then I definitely lol’d at you. I lol’d hard.
…next, make sure the anyball retractable mechanism isn’t already pushing the pencil tube forward when idle which would prevent the pencil tube from moving backwards completely. The mechanism needs to move back in position fully before it can be pushed forward to re-dispense lead. In simpler terms, the length of the pencil tube is faulty and you should fix/tweak it.
Q: Does the shaker mechanism interfere with its ability to spin?
A: Yes, it comes with the territory of a shaker mechanism. Still spins better than a dr.grip shaker though.
Q: Where did you get the spiral insert and is it seamless?
A: Yes, it’s seamless and I made it myself. I had to do a lot of unnecessary tweaking to get it seamless (because I suck at making inserts) so it’s hardly appropriate to release publically, sorry.
Q: Do I have to use dr.grip grips?
A: No, gripping is optional. I went for comfort with the dr.grip grips.
Q: Sunburst body? There’s no sunburst design on it.
A: I removed the sunburst graphics
Q: Can I use an rsvp fine body instead of sunburst?
A: No, because the sunburst has a larger opening in the front and the larger opening is required for the pencil tube.
Q: Can I add fishing weights to the anyball retractable mechanism like the v1 to balance it better?
A: Yes, I didn’t because I was lazy (surprise surprise)
Q: Can I take out the shaker mechanism and use it as a regular pencil?
A: Yep, but it kind of defeats the purpose…
Q: The anyball retrac. mechanism is loose and falls off then I press the back to retract the writing tip.
A: Throw on some tape on the back cap so the retrac. mechanism stays on tighter.
Q: Where did you buy the staedtler remedy pencil?
A: Wal-mart carries them on random occasions but staples has them all the time.
Q: This mods too hard T_T
A: Man up and learn to mod better
Q: Happy new years!
A: Thanks, happy new years to you too.
Q: How much trial-and-error / how many pens did you destroy for you to make this mod?
A: I design most of my mods step by step so I made this on my first try.
Q: Has your spinning improved?
A: Yes, but school and other commitments kind of hinder the amount of time I have to pen spin.
Q: There are lots of spelling and grammar errors. You suck.
A: I’m sorry, I forgot the internet was serious business. Also I just pumped out 3 tutorials in 2 days: pictures, text and all. I’m tired so you can bugger off.
Q: You said approximate cost was $18 but if you add up the numbers you posted it adds up to $17.5
A: I rounded the number, hence approximate -________-
Q: What the fuck, this is a long Q&A, make it stop right meow.

sexy! but where to get a remedy pencil?
-
Date: Wed, Jan 2 2008 04:40:20
It's listed in the Q+A section ._.
Also, could you add a grip to the front? Or would that change the balance too much?
Because I think it would look so much better with one T~T (Although it is already sexy ) -

Very nice, I really like the idea of using the thread part from the g2 and allowing it to easily screw on and off. Much better than v.1

Very cool mod. : P. Might make it if I can find sunbursts somewhere.
Who's this Capt. O guy from the G2 page? Just curious since I have a friend who calls himself that.

Captain Obvious
Nice mod K4S, I'd try it out but I don't think I could get any remedy pencils. -

Shaker opt. pencil wont work because the metal tip is way different from the remedy pencil, sorry. -

How did you drain the RSVP inktube? What's the balance like if I didn't use the shaker?
I've made the SAR MP v1 and I liked it, although it was unbalanced due to the shaker mechanism + dr.grip tip (I don't have fishing weights).
Thanks. -

pull out the tip, then run water through the opposite side of where the tip was

Eww, that's messy. Sounds like it might stain the sink. I gotta get myself a staedler remedy mp. -

I havent seen the 0.7 iRemedy pencil myself so im not sure...i'd have to get one and see for myself if the mechanism is sensitive enough to use the shaker mechanismQUOTE (benjamin0s @ May 13 2008, 09:38 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>do you need the dr. grip just for the tip and the shaker part???
The tip is not dr.grip, look again. The shaker part is needed if you want to make it "shakable"...otherwise you can just skip the shaker part and have a regular pencil. -

One more thing. Where do you get the Staedtler Remedy Pencil 0.5mm? They don't have it at Staples stores in the US like K4S said. I don't want to order it online because the shipping costs too much (like $4 for the cheapest shipping). Since the pencil is only worth $5, I don't want to pay almost double to get it. Also, I have to use a Visa gift card in order to order it online. This is an awful lot of trouble just to get a Remedy Pencil. Can K4S PLEASE TELL ME A STORE IN THE US WHICH CARRIES THE Staedtler Remedy Pencil 0.5mm? I'd really appreciate it. I've also tried an effing lot of office stores, including Staples. None of them carry it. WTF? ***Extremely Frustrated***

I've played around with the SAR v2 and have found something interesting. I've customized the pen so it is much easier to spin, and it is much heavier. I call it the SAR v3, but it sounds like a noob name to me (oh well all good!).
Here are the instructions:
Materials:
1 SAR v2
2 Expo Dry Erase Markers (the low-odor kind with long caps)
2 Dr. Grip pencils or pens (pens recommended)
1) Make the SAR v2 without any grips
2) Add on Dr. Grip pen tips plus one or one-half of a Dr. Grip grip on two Expo Dry Erase Marker Caps. These are the substitute KT caps.
3) Add G2 grips (sectioned part recommended) to the tip end and clicker end
4) Shove the G2 grip 1.2 cm up the tip end
5) Wrap One and a Half Layers of Teflon Tape on the tip end. DO NOT FOLD THE TAPE.
5) Shove the G2 grip down the Profile clicker three sections
Here is pic:
6) Put on substitute KT caps
7) Pen-spin and have fun!

So you have to remove the caps to use the pencil then? Looks a little bit long as well.
