Presentation / Detriments to visual appeal

I am pretty new compared to many here, and just recently I've started to video myself psing now that I've gotten a solid base of tricks. One thing I really dislike about my spinning that I hadn't noticed when spinning "in real life", but can see on video, are some of the excessive hand movements I make. This is especially noticeable during palm-down sonic rises. It's almost as though my fingers 2 and 3 are impatient and want to hurry the pen along so my hand moves up a little so gravity will aid the pen (sorry, it's a little hard to describe). This looks fine to me when I spin, but looks crappy in a video. So basically my hand rises up a little at the beginning of the second sonic. I guess my shadow is a little jerky in getting started. Most other tricks (Tw Sonic bust for example) are ok in terms of controlling hand movement, it's really just these tricks that force your hands into more awkward positions maybe? Anyway, any suggestions how to avoid this visually appalling habit are welcome

I made this thread for people to list other things in PS'ing videos they've seen that they dislike or think make the presentation worse than it deserves to be. Provide vids too, if you do this.

Also, maybe provide a remedy to the thing that makes the spinning look worse if applicable.

Hmm... Try to look into more videos?
Sometimes I practice in front of the mirror to try to kick away those unwanted habits, you can try that, works for me...
Or maybe bonkura's and dathroat's vidoe, their finger positioning have great visual appeal.

Also check out fratleym's vids they way he psitions his hands among other things is a great form to base your hand motions on> (at least I think so) biggrin.gif Good luck

Well when it comes to visual appeal for me (and i planned on starting a thread for this) when i spin normally i spin with my palm facing me. i've noticed that most "pro-spinners" spin with their palm facing outwards, and it's easier for them to film. It's hard for me to get a good angle because i need to have the camera over my shoulder dry.gif

I swear I'll stab any spinner who films a video (for a collab) that has a messy background.

Messy backgrounds are a big big nono.gif !!!

Yea, I've noticed this to. Like when I learned the twisted sonic, it looked very cool from a bird's eye view of the pen but not from another person's. Also the sonic looks better when seen from the top or bottem of the hand, but not the side views. I guess what you could do is perfect the trick as best as you can and then find the best camera angles (usually looking at the pen in a diagonal down angle). And from a top view the viewer won't be able to tell if your hand raises slightly.

yeah, I'd just go with changing around the camera angle until it works for you. I've always prefered a view over the shoulder with the spinning hand being filmed. happy.gif

    1) Film the combo from a few different angles

    2) Hit up your favourite pen spinning buddies on MSN (or AIM for idiots)

    3) Bug them to watch these videos (even if that means 'owing them one')

    4) Ask them which is the best

    5) Wait for answer

Your problem is now solved! smile.gif
