Philosophy / Pen Spinner's personality
Socialize or In-socialize?
-
Date: Fri, Jan 4 2008 05:30:23
I was wondering, as we all know, some people accept pen spinning as an art, some people are neutral, and some people totally cannot accept it.
People who accept it thinks that we are cool, but to those who cannot accept, they might just think that we are just some weirdos. So, does pen spinning makes you more socialize or people are just running away from you?
For me, I personally feel that, some of my friends don't really talked to me when I spin pens. Some came and asked me more about pen spinning(rare, less then 10 so far), and ended up, they always don't have the interest of learning it And those people you don't really know well just try not to get into your groups.
Overall, I think pen spinning makes me quite in-sociable as some people are treating me like a weirdo. -
Date: Fri, Jan 4 2008 05:59:50
Whoa that really sucks...
I think it's probably 'cause they probably think it's impressive, but other people seem to think it's just plain nerdy/geeky/etc so they don't want to hang out with you. Self-image is very important to lotsa people I guess. They wouldn't want to show that they find it impressive 'cause that would make them less than you to other people maybe?
I get the nerdy/geeky message or... The go outside more message from people, occasionally, but more people find it cool than not-cool.
My friends still talk to me when I'm spinning, but that's 'cause they spin pens themselves, or they know pen spinning is a hobby and doesn't change anything.
I guess it does make people think you're a weirdo or something, but that's just 'cause you have a different hobby to everyone else. And I don't think spinning makes me any less socialable than when I didn't spin 'cause it's not like you would want to hang out with people who hates you (not a good word to use, but it's the only word I could think of), just because you spin pens.
I think pen spinning quite useful actually, it sorta helps identifying people... I think >_>.
Sorry, kind of went off-topic, but I don't know what to delete. -

Depends on the people and the person.
A sociable person has a 50/50 chance of starting a conversation
An antisocial has a 0% probability if having a conversation with anyone besides the voice in his/her head. -
Date: Fri, Jan 4 2008 06:05:41
@UEDan: Anti-social is another word for a sociopath. The proper terms would be introvert and extrovert.
Personally... I don't care about others, I just spin because I spin.
Whether or not other people like it or not, they usually inquire about it.
I think altogether, when witnessed by those who don't know about it, it can always cause conversation; Whether it be "Why do you do that?" or "How do you do that?" is irrelevant in my opinion.
I think altogether, it simply adds to you in other people's perspective, never subtracts. They see it as an add-on to who you are, not as subtraction to your social status.
:EDIT:
I think that being introverted or extroverted is also irrelevant to whether a conversation will take place or not. If a person spins, for a hobby or other reason, they have some sort of passion for it. If a person inquires, they will want to talk about it because it is something they enjoy. Even the most introverted of people will respond if someone questions them about something the introvert enjoys, as long as it is seen as a constructive or curious question instead of an insult. -

Wow, that's very inspirational.
Great way of looking at things Square. -
Date: Fri, Jan 4 2008 06:41:08
Yea.
I have the same thinking as square, I don't care people will like it or not, I just spin cos its a hobby of mine. -

A big part of my 1200 pupils big school atleast knows me as "the guy who spins pens", and I'd say quite some people have taken contact with me because of it atleast. And for those that stay away from me because of it, I don't want any contact with them anyways so it's win-win for me really.

well there are people who talk to me about pen spinning when i'm spinnign my pen cause they want to learn how to too
although they may not want to spin as much as i do and waste their life away on upsb (as i do xD), but they try and learn a couple of tricks
i don't think that they've talked to me less because i pen spin cause i still talk to them about other things as well
haven't gotten any comments from those jocks and whatnot, but i'd rather not have them talk to me at all than even complimenting me sicne sometimes their compliments/curiosity is just (or seems just) like mockery rather than actual interest
even if they really are interested, if they ask me a question about ps, i have a natural tendency to assume it to be just mockery, cause that's what they're known to do -

Pen Spinning has never made me less likely the person to be talking to but i do get those wat a geek, get a life, and you got to time time on your hands, but on the contrary more people have talked to me when i started spinning. i'm the guy that always has pens or teh guy that spins pens and pen man. sometimes the "you asian you can spin the pen" kinda thing but i don't see why people should be dissing our spinning i can bet they like doing something just as useless and doesn't "help you in life" kinda crap. people are so into the commoners system where you don't talk to the guy/girl that does something "weird"

Ever since I started spinning,I became famous in my school.
I never got comments like "Get a life!" or something from anyone.
In fact, people think of me as "The Cool Kid " in school, and tend to hang out with me more often,so I guess pen spinning made me more socialized . -
Date: Sat, Jan 5 2008 09:03:06
ha.. i just started going to a new school.
i was talking to someone who i never knew before(basically being friendly) about DotA, while spinning my bictory. halfway through the conversation, he said something like: 'that is just sick man!'.
he wanted to learn a little, but when i told him spinning on a unmodded G2 is much harder than with a stick, he sort of gave up.
later during the camp, glow sticks were thrown around. i'm talking about the cheapo, flimsy type. i caught one and did random charge-pass combos.
one guy i didn't know remarked:' ä½ çš„skill很好ah.' <------(Singlish)
which in english means 'your skill is very good'.
most people are at least entertained by pen spinning, if not interested in learning it. it is only because they try to 'act-cool' or are some poser nonsense that they criticize or make fun of you. -

Very interesting topic we've got going here
My view:
At the very beginning of PSing no one noticed cuz my mods were crap. Then i got into mod like hell and when it came to comssas, KT's, and SARMP(<3 thx K4S) they noticed a lot. Also, when i learned harmonic they got interested cuz they were like:
"How to fuck......"
"teach me -.-"
"=o"
"Holy Shit"
Anyways, ya been 3 months since then and my friends hv gotten used to it, till i make a new mod and people r all like let me see and basically disect it(hate tht). My social status is in between geeky/nerdy and popular cuz i generally don't hang out with the geeks/nerds but i do talk to them considering i'm azn. Anyways, ya i found tht guys either make compliments like, "tht pen is hella long" "do u spend ur life with pens" from people i dont know too much about. From girls is more of the "=o""teach me""how do u do tht" sometimes "how do u make that" and some other girls also say the negative comments. idk but life seems the same to me and socially nothings changed, if it did i wouldnt give a shit anyways ;p

I do get comments like, wow, you actually learn how to spin a pen. And will normally happy when getting this kind of comments.
About the Singlish thing, I am glad that no Singaporeans come into UPSB and spam Singlish, haha...
Yea, I agree with you, people just like acting cool.
I met a guy, who commented pen spinning is boring, and while I left my mod on the table for a toilet break, he started picking it up and tried to do a Thumb Around, but he failed anyway.
When I came back, he quickly put down my pen, haha...QUOTE (Aries @ Jan 5 2008, 05:13 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Very interesting topic we've got going here

"do u spend ur life with pens"
I think no one notices that I am spinning a mod, no matter is my ballsign, RSVP MX or my pencil mod. Don't think that affects?
Yea, I do get comments like "do u spend ur life with pens?" and my answer to them will always be, I am planning to, pen spinning is everything to me now =D -

Only for a short while they feel interested to my pen spinning, that was when i just got into college and we are new friend to each other. Then later they get used to it, rarely ask me about pen spinning. I think maybe they're not interested, give up or try to be cool. I don't think pen spinning makes me more in-sociable because i dont feel like people are running away from me. Besides, i feel like i have more confidence to talk to others because i find that i know something better than other people.
I remember last semester when i went to a classmate's house with other classmates and we discuss our assignment together. During the break, they're playing cards. I was sort like seldom play cards and dont know how to distribute the cards quickly and pro. Then they laughed at me, one of them said "Although you spin pen so good but you're so suck at this, HAHAHA... c'mon, we must laugh at her... HAHAHA!" Hidden meaning is they dont have much chances to laugh at my pen spinning. BTW, i just smile and let them laughed, at least i find that they feel better when they realized that they know something better than me. That's wont make us away from each other.
Even though now i already learned how to distribute cards, i still dont do nicely in front of my friends. -

well since my school is full of "dem white kids who think dey are teh black gangsta" aka "wigger" they treat me as if im some "alien." a couple of times I've had the wow you must have no life or do you spend your whole time doing that? Ive solved a couple of those issues with my any-x crossbow or my bic-any-x crossbow but overall i dont really care whether it makes me insociable or sociable. a few others ive told them "do you spend your life with skateboards or something" or "why does being able to play sports better than another make you any different?" or "k, whatever poser ass motherfucker go have anal with your fucking friends and skateboards k? "

I think its really how the are introduced to pen spinning (the observer). If its a cool kid who knows how to make an impression on ppl (e.g. my friend who shows everyone pen spinning) then they wont get the whole "wow ur a nerd who spends all his time on worthless crap" idea bout it. Personally, being at least semi-well-known in my school for being on the Varsity XC/Track team (mostly cause i wear my letterman's every other day), and im in the presence of someone who has never seen pen spinning before, i can subtly spin (a normal looking pen, cause if u spin a Dr. KT or sumthing in skool they might think ur nerdy again) around them, and when they get interested enough to ask, i just tell them its a kool thing to do, maybe try an teach them a sonic or a ta, then stop spinning so they dont think im obsessive.
I'm proud of being a spinner, but its not somthing ppl are going to respect unless you show them subtly.... -
Date: Mon, Jan 7 2008 06:20:24
the only thing i admire bout spinners is they dont give a fuck wut others think but if people r telling u that wut ur doing is nerdy i dont think u would wanna talk 2 them. So if u wanted to socialize with people the ones that r anti ps would not wanna socialize so u could still socialize but not with every1

for me, really its been, dude thats sweet, but dear god kid do you have NO LIFE!???!
And for me I have a mild case of tourettes(NOT THE SHOUTING, but a couple random twitches) and with pens i'm able to channel some of those ticks into my hand, so i'm constantly spinning my pen, since medication can only do so much. When you're seen spinning a pen constantly, it just becomes a part of you're personality. I've always been a Geek/Nerd w/e....But i've been blessed with the ability to travel around groups of certain people, making introducing stupid things easier. But in terms of making me more or less sociable. It really has done both, believe it or not, i've actually gotten a 1-night stand because of the introduction of pen spinning and further events*cough* It's deterred quite a few people just for the fact of knowing that they can't do it and therefore its stupid and lame.
Whenever anyone says, Dude kid, you have no life...I just hold up a picture of my g/f sitting on my car and my College ID -
Date: Thu, Jan 10 2008 02:51:37
Actually it kinda depends on the person really.
There are pretty much two major penspinners in my school, one super popular because of it... and... me.
when i penspin people hit it out of my hands, call me a nerd, or tell me to get a life
but with this other dude he's like... yeah popular just because of it

That sucks. Well, one person in my class call me a nerd when i do it. But the funny thing is that i almost took his girlfriend beacuse of it, rofl.
Back to topic. I dont think it's the penspinning that gives you a personality. I have many friends that liked me before i started and after i started.
Your personality, hopefully, came to you long before you started with ps.
Tbh, im very socialized, but i just do some random spinning when i met up with friends.. Many ppl that just see it once marks it as shit and friends i hang out with more often enjoys it and gives nice comments..
I think it made no difference on me -

LOL I can't believe that you almost snatch someone girlfriend. Maybe I should pen spin to get girls too, haha. I not despo Anyway, I did impress the girl which I am currently interested in when I randomly just took out my mod and spin.
Actually I was wondering, cos many people have been called a nerd and what so ever. So this thread actually wants to find out, the personality are pen spinner, are we really nerds? Not trying to say it gives us personality.
But so far, most of us don't, but sad thing is, sometimes, people will avoid us. -

Gee, if someone who pen spins is a nerd, then I'm producing more and more nerds in my class, cause I'm teaching my classmates fundamental tricks like TA and Sonic.
Now,half of the class pen spins when the teacher is teaching.
*If someone calls my a nerd for pen spinning,I'll make sure I hit his eyes with Leigun. -

Date: Tue, Feb 12 2008 11:56:51
I have some people who ask me about how to do it because they think it is just twirling a pen around your fingers but they all loose intrest when they find out that is has something to do with math, and take knowledge to know why a pen will spin the way it does.

But I think one thing good about pen spinning, I made some pen spinning friends after a gathering.
Maybe we are still socialize after all? Haha... -

Wow nice. But what's the connection of having the skill of spinning pen to being a nerd? Hey spinning is NOT easy. hahha. maybe they classify patient and talented people as nerds because they're too lazzzy and they're to busy naming other people. -

My best friend doesn't caire much, some girls don't caire, some ask me about penspinning, some friends ask me how my spinning is going, and of course the people who say it's geeky. I don't caire because I am sorta a geek/nerd lol Some laugh but say it's awsome. Honestly, I don't caire, I'll spin cause I find its awsome
I'm anywase called a geek cause I like video games. I say i'm a geek and proud of it -

lol leigun. in school. lots of HOT girls call me "totoy"(tagalog term for saying, childish) but then i say to myself. fuck you all, youre just jealous u cant do it! and btw, i also taught my classmates pen spinning. haha they have crappy mods made out of tape and glue, ball bearings and stuff, and me and my classm8s are same w/ u. spinning at the same time during class. the teacher gets irritated sometimes..well my pens always get confiscated but i always get them back. lol -

I think that all pen spinners sharing some similar personality, good and bad.
-I`d imagine that pen spinners are extremely dedicated to something they enjoy and care for. If not then well you wouldn`t really be considered a pen spinning and more someone who just enjoys doing random tricks. Most of us like to be good at what we do and we can get a bit obcessive; this might scare others away=P.
-Competitive. It`s natural to want to be good at something you do if not one of the best. We practice and practice, do battles, compete in tournaments so there is some competitiveness if not a lot. I generally don`t like people who are extremely competitive especially when I`m not even trying to compete with them=_=.
Erm yeah...apart from that people might think it`s a bit weird as it`s not a common hobby. Pen spinners are rare and this forum shows it. I think these are a few reason why people might not like pen spinners, but I don`t think it`s that big of a problem if you keep a balance between pen spinning and your social life. It`s like all other hobbies=|; in my opinion it shouldn`t make you any less sociable than before=P. -

It's weird. When someone is pro at something, a noob would probably say they have no life. But when someone is pro at pen spinning, its amazing because not a lot of people can do that. But someone might say they have a little too much time on there hands

No one really cares that I can spin a pen (except for ONE person who saw how fast I was fingerpassing). One person is telling me I should be a drummer because of spinning. Another person is telling me that I need a hobby. Other talk about how long my pen is like "that pen is long" or "where did you get that long wand of a pen?". I dont really care, I do it for personal amusement. I spin a pen because I can do it at work and at school because I dont have much time in between.

Hey, for me, when i spin pens, people dont look at the way i spin.....infact, they look at my pens. They will be like asking me how i mod and wat pen i use. But they will only crowd around me at that time.....after the noe how to do a simple mod, the just mind their own business. But also, like what novastrike say, after gatherings, i will for sure make new friends. And btw, i am now having friend with people all around the globe. Since i am part of UPSB now.

1. Irritating when Singlish are used in the forums.

It's crazy. I brought a bictory to school, and the next day some kid had glued 2 un-sharpened pencils together and was *trying* to spin it lol, I kind of started a fad for awhile but then it died down.
