Philosophy / Behind Penspinning

Ok, so let's get started on those questions.
Why does one spin a pen?
In my opinion, it is a very yet unorthodox hobby that I enjoy. Taking penspinning beyond what it already is (charges, sonics) is quite rare to me. I decided to have an uncommon hobby by picking penspinning up. Eventually, it became quite fun, especially how it feels to have the pen slide freely through the fingers and amazing others with such a perplexing talent. As I progressed through penspinning, It began to grow subconsciously on me, I began to do it without thought while the same time, landing some decent moves. It became more than just a hobby then, perhaps a small lifestyle for me. When I joined UCPSB, this was when I went into indepth spinning. I loved penspinning, for I could easily impress others with such a simple little combo that will look amazing to them. I felt great because I actually got some acknowledgement for my spinning, no matter how horrible it was. When I look at other spinners, I get that feeling that I should advance more into learning what they know, it was like a goal. Penspinning, amazingly, also keeps me socially satisfied. UCPSB/UPSB were like a group of families and friends (corny aint it?). The people here on UPSB were as close as best friends to me, maybe even family. The Norcal gathering was a great way for me to meet these people I considered my best friends.
I may not have effectively answered this question, but this is why I personally penspin.
Spinning in Public, The Reaction of Others.
There are people who will enjoy your hobby and maybe get into it a bit of themselves, but then again, there will be people who put you down. There can be many reasons why things like this can happen. In school when I spin, I get the occasional "Cool! How do you do that?" alot, but I also get "Get a life." or something along the lines of that. Why is it that most normal hobbies like running or collecting doesn't get as much ridicule as penspinning? Some people have to understand that penspinning is not a very common hobby, therefore, ridicule can appear quite normal in some cases. I once remembered a post back in UCPSB where someone stated that they have been beaten up because of this hobby. Though the statement could be overexaggerated, it seems extremely ridiculous why someone would get caught up in a fight over this. Behind the minds of others when they notice your spinning will always remain an enigma, but if you are one to get bothered, don't worry. -

You know, in my country, most part of the people are making fun of penspining. When I came to the USA, the very all people I spinned before were impressed and wanted to learn it^^
The American Dream I suppose (and the French Nightmare ) -

"Get a life." Heard that a couple times, though the guy I heard it from came back the day after knowing how to do thumbaround, so hes pretty much a hypocrite.

Why do I spin a pen?
I ran into pen spinning accidently when I was starting out juggling and looking for some tricks to do with 3 balls. I quickly took to doing the new hobby in school during my exams at the end of high school (at age 16). Since then, I have quit, but always come back. Why? Not spinning a pen doesn't feel right, and I start to miss it The community also, is awesome. We are perhaps one of the best closest internet communites around! What really keeps me going back the most though, is finding something new to do with the pen, something that comes out of nowhere, that never existed before, and now it does. Magic! Pen spinning is only limited by your imagination! -

Yeah I've gotten both reactions.
I personally think that the people who keep spinning just like manipulate things or push things to the limit. Like how cool can I make this pen move Or because we all have a serious metal condition. -

I first was introduced to pen spinning by Boris the computer nerd from Goldeneye. He would perform a fingerpass rev. whenever he was under pressure and that, to me, was the coolest. After a few years I found out about pen spinning and then first thing I learned wast the TA, then the fingerpass rev. After that the addiction just grew. Now, due to the dexterity I gained spinning pens, I've picked up the guitar and even invented some of my own contact juggling styles, such as with a one inch diameter rubber instead of a pen. Now I just spin because its something to do with my hands in school, at home etc. and I love every minute of it.

why do people practice rubiks cube? why do people practice juggling? why do people practice card tricks?
they all require skill, they all require practice, and there will always be people that think that it's amazing, and people that think the performer needs a life. -

Why does one spin a pen?
You ask that in a way which seems you expect one general answer. You do realise the answer is different to every person. -

Everyone is very different, yet we all end up at the same outcome. -

Tho, most people might say because they find it awsome... I saw the haduri video, my brother showed me when he learned the TA, I couldn't even do a TA. Couple of years later my good friend was doing a TA and I said I might just learn it, I did then I started to understand the sonic tutorial that I didn't when I was younger and bam it started ^^ I just found it all kicked "butt"...

I think penspinning is not something that everybody does and so, it makes you different from others...
If everybody in the world was good at penspinning, will it be still interesting though...
Well, it's something that makes people feel you are nerdy... don't care about it.
I think it's cool, nothing else... -

why i spin:
i like manipulating stuff, everyday objects. i just like it. i don't really care what others say. afterall, i spin for my own entertainment, not theirs. but if they do find my penspinning or other manipulations entertaining, thats a bonus.
my dream, of course, is to be a master manipulator/flourisher. but thats impossible, as i hate taking risks. -

The reason that I spin is because of the famous PDS video. Saw it, wanted to learn it to impress people. When I did learn how to spin I spun pretty much in classes. But with time I've gotten used to not spin in public alot. Nothing really I like to do. I spin for myself and to keep myself happy.
The communities has meant alot aswell. If I wouldn't be active on boards I'm sure it wouldn't be half as fun to spin either. -

firstly i wanted to do it (as a lot of people i think) to impress others. but today i do it because i like the idea and the progress of penspinning. i bet it'll be more public than today someday. and then all of the people who laugh about it, stop laughing --- i hope u know what i mean oO

I spin because I like the sensation of the pen going from a finger to another, and for the pleasure of the visual effect.I'm a musician(violin, for 11 years),so I tend to compare my both hobbies. people don't say me "get a life"when they see me spinning, but I know a lot of them think so.(even if I see them trying to practice on harmonic Ta and sonic^_^) If everyone was good at pen spinning, there still would be the ones with style.music is the most popular art,but those who have real knowledge about it can recognize talent and hard work. Penspinning is different because there are still so few of us that it's still ""underground"",so you have the pleasure to see amazement in the eyes of your friends when they see you spin, and without them telling you "dude, you really need to improve your midback 1.5".
But today I don't do it to impress others anymore, but to prove to myself I can practice a skill until I reach my limits.that's what I love about ps.working for months on hard tricks, speed, and style... -

I like to tell myself I spin for my own satisfaction, but do I really? Sure, I can love it sometime when people are impressed by my spinning, but I love even more to see the pen floating between my fingers in one beautiful blur.
I spin for my own satisfaction. -

We spin because of a certain dedication. Most people enjoy watching someone spin/juggle/etc, but nobody wants to do it. They'll try. They'll pick up a pen and when it doesn't automatically start spinning in their hand they give up. We don't.

Everyone spins for different reasons.
Ceedgee basically summarizes why I spin to a point. Saw PDS, wanted to impress people, learned stuff over the years slowly, stuck because of the community... which was ruined by UCPSB and replaced by a generation of people who want to be spoon fed video tutorials -

I think the single most common reason why people spin is because we simply enjoy it. Pen spinning is a hobby and hobbies are done because they are enjoyable. Simple as that. If you delve any deeper into the reasons, then you roam into individualistic realms. Some find motivation because they want to show off, or some drive themselves because they want to become the best. Whatever the detailed reason may be, we all enjoy it; otherwise, we wouldn't want to continue.

guys, if its in the philosophy section, it's not meant as a "Why did you start pen spinning" thread.
It's a much more in-depth discussion of why spinners, in general, spin. -

Nicely said. I agree completely. -

Why does one spin a pen?
Ok, i just cut off the part how did i started and quit and back again because few points from Kazzze, Mats, UnEmploymentDude and Ceedgee explain almost all.
Behind Penspinning
Like Sfsr, i really like to see pen get moved smoothly and freely between my fingers. I'm not that good yet, i can't really have the right feeling of pen going between my fingers normally during my practices but occasionally, i failed to do some trick or linking and it came up something different or trick even that i didn't learn or can't do it yet(when i want to) or even something new, and it's the right feel! It's so great! At that moment i get excited and tend to do it again but i can't manage to do it again. Gee, i'll missed that very right feel of the flow of the pen after that. Other people who don't spin or just know to do some fundamental tricks but dont really get into pen spinning, they're hardly know how it feels. I know this because i was like that too when i 1st saw PDS collab before i got into pen spinning. That time i was impressed but ignored it until i have the thought to try it.
Another is the atmosphere of the PS community(board/forum). Like i like the atmosphere here, everyone is sharing their thought, tricks, combos, videos, etc. and everyone is working together to organize something, to develop/improve pen spinning(tricks, combos, presentations, community, etc.). It's simply feels great, even other manipulations and other fields' communities have the same things happened. -

Why one spin pen:
I have several reasons:
1) Complexly moving a finger affects back part of your brain. You might get smarter that way.
2) Amusing. I spin because i guess it's something to do when your parents only tell you to do work and won't let me play game or go play football outside, and it's pretty kool when i finish making a combo. It's all matter of how people think what is fun.
Other people's reaction:
This totally depend on the personality, so i don't care.
