can anyone give me any tips on how i can get my pinky to NOT stop the pen from spinning around my ring finger when i attempt the ring bak? it seems to me that ring bak is really really hard because the pinky and ring fingers only move in correspondence with each other, and therefore causing the pen to come to a screeching halt as the pinky DOES NOT curl in enough without making my ring finger curl in... any advice or tips on how it works? i CAN do all other baks, thanks

I'm not really sure what you mean but I'm assuming that your pen won't lift out of your 3 4 position?
If so, hold your pinky down with your thumb and try it. -

You mean that you cannot bend your pinky finger without bending down your ring finger?
Aw,that sucks.
I have that problem before too, then I kept doing finger exercises, you know, try to bend down your pinky without bending down your ring.
After a month,it worked.
Because of my stupid ring and pinky fingers,it took me 2 months to master bakfall. -

practice it individually, by putting ur ring finger above the pen, while 2 and 4 are below the pen.

Yeah, if your ring finger is very inflexible the only way to be able to get it is to do finger exercises.
I was pretty lucky though, I got my first bakfall after 2-3 days, not too much trouble. -

wow, thanks all for all the tips, but i have another question.... what kind of "finger exercises" are these you speak of? i am kinda confused on that one. i guess i'll do some research lol... but... why would my fingers be weak? between playing bass and stepmania you'd think that my fingers have no problems lol...

Well heres one you can do. Put all of you fingers down except for your ring finger and hold the fingers down with you thumb. Raise your ring finger up and down to increase its strength.

Another good finger exercise to do would be finger push-ups. Just take a pencil and hold it with your fingers (1 through 4) alternating on both sides of the pen (like 1 is on the left and 2 is the right), then one at a time alternate your fingers from side to with out moving your other fingers. Three of your fingers should always be in contact with the pen.
Hope that description was helpful... If not i gues google will make up for it... :D xD -

My problem is that I'm catching the ringbak in 12...How can I get rid of that?

i dunno how you're really getting the ringbak into the 12 slot o.0... but here's my guess
i think that you're not creating any space between the ring and the middle for it to slide into and fall into the 34 slot, and instead, you're not creating the gap and letting the pen slide up to the 12 slot
so my suggestion, work on creating a reasonable gap between your middle and ring so that that gap can intercept the ringback and let it fall into the slot rather than letting it slide off to the side as a result of not giving the pen any path to travel (from keepign that space closed) -

U[ps sry, I actually meant 23^^"
Well Whatever I think the gap is the problem, thx. -

well, if it's in the 23 slot, could it just be that it's an incomplete bak, cause then you just need to bring it around a bit more -

Hmm, about catching the ring bak in the 23 slot would be like catching a normal korean backaround in the T1 slot.
Try doing this:
Make a fist, but let loose your ring and pinky.
So, your 1 & 2 fingers should be pinned down by your thumb.
Now, try doing a korean backaround with the ring finger as though it was in the 12 slot. -

I still don't understand how your pinky is stopping it. Every finger but your ring is supposed to stay down. Are you just having trouble controlling your pinky from staying down?

i don't know whether i should post my ring bak problem here or in the 4-ish month dead bakfall thread...
but... anyway, i have a problem when i want to do bak fall...
usually, i can do index bak and middle bak but after i do middle bak and i intend to do the ring bak, the pen ends up below my ring finger and on top of my middle and pinky 0_o -
Date: Wed, Jan 30 2008 07:01:14
wait so the pen ends up above the middle finger and pinky and below the ring finger?
isn't that where the pen is supposed to be? -

I think that she means that the pen gets stuck there, instead of passing all the way under the ring finger into the 34 slot so that she could then do the Pinkybak.
-
Date: Wed, Jan 30 2008 07:18:44
well i'm sure that will be a quick fix, lucky him, after my midbak it kind of gets stuck on my index finger, making it a really bad pass from 23-34.

oh yeah... forgot to ask, does finger independence affect it too?

finger independence? i'm gonna guess you mean whether or not you can move your ring and pinky fingers separately, and i'm gonna say this: yes and no... it does affect it if that's the reason it's getting stuck or not working (the problem i had at first), but just practice, or practice trying to keep all your fingers straight, and bend only your pinky... i don't know anyone that can bend their pinky all the way down like they can the rest of their fingers, but after a bit of practice and learning how it works, it shouldn't be that hard so that's where the no is too lol -
Date: Fri, Feb 8 2008 11:31:18
ow! that hurts to move my pinky separately
-

It hurts for me at first, but after practicing the trick for a month, the pain vanishes.

I think there's like 2 other topics talking about this. But I just hold the pen in 234 with 3 higher than 2 and 4, then do a bak. Extend your ring finger somewhat so the pen can travel in a straight path around the finger and the pen pretty much falls into the 34 slot. >_>

Since you most likely can't lift your ring very high, bend all your other fingers slightly so it's easier.
Also you should loosen up
you should've posted this in the bak fall topic -

Read throught this thread for soe good advice, once you have the correct method then practice my good friend!

For some reason, when I do the ring bak, the pen goes around but i can't open my ring and pinky enough so that I can catch it :/
-
Date: Mon, Jun 15 2009 19:09:42
...do you want help? xD
instead of opening up your pinky and ring, bend your ring up and bend the pinky down? iunno, if that makes sense. or just get more finger dexterity -
Date: Mon, Jun 15 2009 19:10:45
sounds like u have an issue with flexibility... when ur start the ringbak, ur pen has to be in the same slot as you catch it...so u no that u have the ability to hold ur pen in that position...u might also have a problem with finger independence...most people have a hard time moving their ring and pinky fingers independently...just practice this by making a fist and trying to lift up just your ring finger...over time you will find u have more flexibility and independence...this should make it easier for you to raise your ring finger and catch the pen when its coming back around...

the first time i got into ringbaks smoothly was when i tried bakfalls w/ my friends kt, so you could try switching to a heavier pen, then working your way back down to whatever you use now

i have the same problem. the pen does not leave 34, and it gets really frustrating. hopefully its working for you by now.

work on stretching your ring finger.
