General Discussion / How do you come up with combos?

I've been wondering for some time.
I believe combos for videos are planned ahead of time, but still how do you get ideas what to link to what etc
or can you improvise a combo on the spot? Let's say, if you want to show some pen spinning to someone. Do you improvise something, or do you use a 'planned' combo? -

you make combos by improvising. if you know many tricks, then just start with one, then try to do something after that (that will link of course), add another on that, and then just practice that, make it smoother, and you can show that combo

It's called freestylin. Not hard when you know a good number of tricks. I don't plan any of my combos -- just freestyle to practice smoothness and practice new tricks.

i think it all just happens during the time we learn pen spinning. i tend to just add random tricks and then 'find' a new combo which i haven't ever done before
also like when i 'sucked' at pen spinning i usually did:
sonic 34-23 -> twisted sonic 23-12 -> pass 12-23 -> sonic 23-12
but as you learn more tricks and stuff i just added stuff onto those combos like
sonic 34-24 -> twisted sonic 24-12 -> pass 12-23 -> middle around 23-23 -> thumbaround 23 -T1 -

When I show penspinning to someone, I make up a freestyle on the spot.
Whenever I film for a collab or battle, I start off by freestyling, and when something looks really cool I'll use it in the next freestyle, and then at at the very end it ends up being a planned out combo that gets filmed. So its kinda like several attempts at freestyling in a row that end up evolving into a planned combo. Its really complicated and weird. -

Well normally I get a combo ready by just planning my tricks then when I have my combo finished I will wait for a battle or a collab or something then I will use it. As for showing people pen spinning I normally just use the combo that I made up and is waiting to be used for a collab or something.

When planning out a combo you (atleast I) usually start out with an idea, concept, or trick line you'd like to develop and show to others. From there you add some tricks that work good to start combos with, you add some harder tricks to show off some skills, and often end it with a neat finnish. I atleast often come up with combos like these while filming. I start doing some random stuff, come up with something I don't usually do which I would want to include, and after a while develop it into a planned out combo and keep filming untill I eventually nail it.

I usually try to showcase one trick that is quite hard-hitting or eye catching for every combo, like a complex hybrid or some stall trick... that kind of stuff.
so I build my combo around it, with a more simple and slow opening, and a faster paced finisher.
too many 'climaxes' make every thing seem too easy IMO.
though regretfully some of my combos are pure filler tricks. that's when i have no 'special trick' to show. -

I usually make my combo out of smaller (2-3-4 trick) combos that I just kinda tack together, adding any tricks inbetween them that are needed to link them together. Sometimes I base a whole combo around just one trick I want to get in, but still, I use smaller combos and tack them together around this main trick.

Free styling, you can come out with different variations.

I do most of the things already mentioned.
Lately though I have been trying to copy combos off collabs and seeing how others connect tricks has helped learn new combinations. I tend to get stuck doing the same things but by watching others I see ways to connect tricks that I never thought of before. -

i have lots of sets of mini combos and i just link them up. Most of the time it looks pretty good

First, I start off with a mini combo comprised of a few tricks. I write it all down somewhere, then think of different tricks to add on to that minicombo. Then I edit it all accordingly and its all trial and error from there.
