simple retractable mx minor modification

OK this is a rather simple modification to the mx that allows it to write on the front and still prevent the ink from getting all over you when you are spinning. As you can see in the pic, it looks exactly like an mx.

To use, just take off the cap and push down for the inktube to come out. To retractm smimply push down on the inkube so it goes back into the body. The trick is that the anyball inktube is thicker than the rsvp so it fits tightly inside the mx

    Simple Retractable MX tutorial

    pros
    looks exactly like an mx
    writes on the front
in addition to an mx, only an anyball is needed
COG is shifted closer to COP because of anyball inktube in front.
    silent

    cons:
you have to take the cap off to use

    Materials:
1 premodded rsvp mx or at least all the parts necessary for one
    1 toothpick
    1 anyball/profile inktube
1 hgg back plug (Not really necessary)

    1. take the tip off your mx and cut a bit of the rsvp (about 3 mm) off so the inktube can come out then put the tip back on.
    2. using pliers, crimp the the wings on the anyball inktube a little so it fits tightly into the rsvp and stick a tooth into the inktube.
    3. stick the toothpick( with the inktube attached on the other end) through the hole in the back plug scrwe it on the rsvp body.
    4. glue/tape/use putty to put the hgg back plug over the toothpick so when you press down you dont hurt yourself. It does not have to be an hgg back plug, it can be anything to cover the toothpick. You may also cut any excess toothpick you have so its not so long.

yea thats pretty much it guys real simple

Yes it is possible, and rather easy to make this mod in such a way where you can simple push down on the rsvp cap rather than having to take it off and push down, but im too lazy to do that and im sure you can figure that out on your own.

oo happy.gif im gonna go try this, but how well does the mechanism hold? is it stable?

  3. pholord
    Date: Fri, Jan 18 2008 05:21:46

Of course its stable. This is the most stable retractable mod you will ever make cause there virtually is no mechanism. Which also means its absolutley silent. Spins like an mx, as study as an mx, looks like an mx, writes better than an mx.

I did this mod before tongue.gif Great job BTW!
I have like only one though, but I already like original MX, that arent rects. I like taking the cap off better
    It's way cooler cool.gif

Very nice, i like the concept. I guess you cant really press down too hard when you write though but you can probably tweak that with how much you actually crimp the inktube though, correct?

Nice. And what about length and weight?

  7. iamk34n3
    Date: Fri, Jan 18 2008 12:08:13

its the exact same length... the only thing is that the cog is pushed fowards towards the cop

If u just used a way longer toothpick , could u just push the cap and it'll do the same

I'm seriously considering making this mod, but can you tell us where to crimp the inktube?

  14. iamk34n3
    Date: Fri, Jan 18 2008 23:41:05

you crimp it on the wings of the anyball inktube

I've converted like 3 of my MXs to do this and some of the COPs aren't exactly in center mark of the insert. Whats the exact measurement of the toothpick?

  17. iamk34n3
    Date: Sat, Jan 19 2008 01:59:09

you mean the COG right? and i think its because he used an anyball grip rather than an hgg

Yeah COG. He used a HGG grip. When I make this mod it only pushes the COG closer to the center only 3 MM.. sleep.gif I want it in the center of the insert. I use the same inserts PhoLord uses.

  19. iamk34n3
    Date: Sat, Jan 19 2008 02:04:46

well in the video where he balances the pen on the COG, i swear hes using an anyball grip...

  20. pholord
    Date: Sat, Jan 19 2008 02:05:32

toothpick can be any length you desire. Mine happens to be 5.5 cm and I cut off a little of the hgg backplug. COG may not be exactly at the COP but it is closer than an mx.

Oh and pholord, I think mod is really similar to godofdeath_ 's mod : http://s15.invisionfree.com/UCPSB/index.php?showtopic=1109
But his mod uses more pens(G2) and it's more complicated to your mod. But godofdeath_'s mod squeezes the G2 Inktube and your mod presses(Not click) the toothpick on the back. And you two's mod basically let the inktube get stuck so you can write and also pushes to get back in, so overall, I think it's pretty much the same idea but you do different things smile.gif

  22. pholord
    Date: Sat, Jan 19 2008 06:01:26

godofdeath_'s mod uses the g2 clicker mechanism tho. I think the mod you are refering to is Donk3y's RMX, which involves squeezing the g2 inktube. http://s15.invisionfree.com/UCPSB/index.php?showtopic=3902

very nice mod pretty easy to you can pretty much just take a normal mx and just add on, im just wondering if while your writing it would push the ink tube back up, and wouldnt this loosen the rsvp cap from taking it off and on

  26. Martin
    Date: Mon, Jan 21 2008 04:38:40

The ink tube should stay down when you're writing. You need a little bit of force to push the ink tube back up.
Also, the when you do push the inktube back up the cap should stay on.

  27. pholord
    Date: Mon, Jan 21 2008 04:56:03

Well ud be taking the cap on and off as much as you would on a normal mx if you wanted to write with it. It also all depends on the cap itself. Some are slightly tighter than others and you can always add tape if it gets too loose.

Odd, I used a rsvp and tried to stick a retractable profile inktube into it, but it didn't work. The profile inktube has a bump where the spring is supposed to be and it doesn't fit the rsvp barrel.

What to do I do? Btw, how does it work without a spring?

so you can't just press teh toothpick with the hgg backplug in order to retract it? o.0...?
do you have to press on the inktube and force it back up?

what does "crimp the wings' mean? like you crimp it so it doesn't stick out as much or crimp it so it is wider?

it means to squeeze in the thing that blocks the spring, making the barrel able to go into the rsvp barrel

What would be the ideal tool to use to cut off the 3 mm of the RSVP?

    Hacksaw/dremel/heat+xacto

...I got around to making this mod and i gotta say it's pretty cool. I changed it a little so you dont have to take off the back cap. Check it out HERE.

After watching the vid, I still don't get how the inktube stays out when writing. Are the rsvp cap and grip strong enough to hold it sturdy while writing if the lip of the cap goes over into the clear part of the barrel?

As long as you don't write extremely hard, there is enough friction to help keep the inktube from going back in. Its kind of the same concept for the MP MX V.3.
