clarification for the knockout stages:
"During the semi-finals, the best team from the group 1 (1A) will fight the second best team from group 2 (2B) and vice versa (2A vs 1B)."
http://www.upsb.info/wiki/index.php/World_...at#Group_stages
This means that if UPSB were to advance to the semi-finals, we are guaranteed to fight a team from group 2, such as KPSA or FPSB. In addition, it is more advantageous to finish first in your group than second because you get to battle the weaker team from the other group. -

aw jebus we're in the same group as JEB?
-
Date: Sun, Jan 20 2008 02:20:19
Well not as bad as round 2, the others are against KPSA and FPSB o.0

So what? Top 2 go through and we can sure finish 2nd if we can't get 1st. JEB being in our group also means we can't see them again until the final -

It's just like.....they're right next to us.....breathing down our necks.....

this image is wrong, in the semi-final, UPSB would be fighting either KPSA or FPSB, and JEB would fight the other one. -

Whereto are we supposed to upload our videos? Putfile/YuoTube-like or Maegaupload and stuff?
QUOTE (NoRice4U @ Jan 20 2008, 03:48 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>hehe Sfsr, are you probably like oh fuxx..
Not really ^^ I mean, I think JEB has the best team, so I'm happy we're not with them. And we think we have a fair chance to beat the other teams atleast. Either we're over confident, or just plain stupid :D
-
Date: Sun, Jan 20 2008 18:12:46
I would suggest not uploading your videos too soon so that nothing gets leaked.
-

Yeah, but how does CrAsH want the videos? I doubt anyone has a video ready yet anyhow, I just want to know in what way he wants to receive them..

@sathon: you think I don't do research on my opponents? -

Hi Guys,
For Sfsr's question, if it is possible i would like the video's uploaded to youtube or putfile, and send me the link. If not then i will upload the videos witout a problem, so either send me a link or send me a video, either is fine. If you can please send it to my email, [email protected], if not pm is cool.
UPSB has an interesting group lol, from what ive been seeing of thaispinner, they are pretty impressive. UPSB, Thaispinner, JEB, should be very interesting lol.
Take care guys -

Ok just to make things clear:
I do NOT know who is in the picture on the world cup website! Stop asking me that! If Crash wants to answer this, he will. If not, then that person identity will remain a secret. -

JEB (Japan)
Ayatori[ES]
Key3
Saizen
kUzu[ES]
Pesp[ES]
toro[ES]
Manager: Key3
What does the "[ES]" mean? -
Date: Thu, Jan 24 2008 09:04:39
It means they're in the "Evolving Spinners" team. Like Banz and Frat have xfs after their name, which means they're in Force Spinners.

Hi Guys,
Ill sort your name out Eriror, ill change it sometime today.
By the way, wanted to let everybody know, we have an official sponsor for the world cup 08, they are a pretty big company, and they will sponsor the event, like providing prizes for the winning team, and makin the tournament more official. There is quiet a bit of media lined up for the event, so it's really good that it's becoming more official.
I will post up what prizes will be offerred for the winning team this evening when i post the line ups.
Take care -

Or is it against the rules ? -

i was in KPSA and i read a thread made by Sound. (who's in the KPSA WT team) It was about UPSB WT team members pros and cons. and it was kinda interesting so i've translate it to english. he gave comment on 3 things tricks, style, overall.
TNC:
trick: can do a lot of tricks. he can use arounds with all fingers.. freely.
style: doesn't have a distinctive style.
overall can't think of anymore pros but to mention 1 cons is that he doesn't have a distinctive style.
Dathroat:
trick: performs nice aerials with alot of interesting trick.
style: it reminds people of Bonkura alot. Nice Style
overall: due to the 'Bonkura Style(?)' his speed isn't that fast. the length limit is 25sec and he may not be able to show off all his 'cool' tricks in the time limit. he may fall just like bonkura did in 2007 WT for this reason.
Eriror: (2nd in 07 WT)
trick: as the 2nd place in the WT last year, he can use both his hand freely without any problem. he has a trick he uses alot but he uses it too fast to identify it. cool trick.
style: has he's own style. Style that isn't really 'special', but something that is hard to copy. when doing aerials at the end or doing a hard trick in the middle of a combo, its often not jumpy(?)
overall: he's smoothness is like a water stream(constant). one bad thing is that he's video are too long. even though hes combo is often 'jumpy,' the hardness of his combo and the smoothness covers that bit up.
Scott Shaputis: (he used an old vid of Scott to comment him, he said that he couldn't find other vids)
trick: he uses all the tricks he can really well. but doesn't have a lot of tricks he can do
style: hard to give comment by just using one video
overall: hard to give comment by just using one video
Toast:
trick: in the beginning of the vid, didn't know why a person like this was in the team, but towards the end he's combos were getting better but he's trick still wasn't that good. wouldn't call him a pro but wouldn't call him a noob.
style: normal but interesting.
overall: can tell that he practiced alot. connecting tricks after aerials are smooth. makes mistake sometimes.
Vicgotgame
trick: strong at neobak
style: has he's own style but its kinda similar to frat's style
overall: looking forward to see he's video in 08 WT. lack of video, won't comment much.
its just based on few videos Sound saw, don't take every word for truth. sorry for some bad translation.
PS: i'm not a member of KPSA i'm a member of upsb, i just go to KPSA like once a week to see soething useful. -

you can't enhance or affect the spinning in any way.
you can add editing before or after the combo.
adding editing won't give you any mark.
it also won't take off any mark if you don't affect the spinning.
the editing counts inside the 25 seconds limit.
lol @Sound, he doesn't know our team much. -

uhh no.
uriel was scheduled to fight sfsr.
if uriel turned in a video, you MUST use his video.
Crash has the right to refuse substitutions which are not necessary. If Uriel has a video ready, then of course it's not a necessary substitution.
Using substitution to get the better video is considered CHEATING. That is not a valid reason to substitute. -

It is very hard very slowly to watch, maybe this thing only appear in China area, but it affect so many psers.why not upload on youtube? http://www.putfile.com is so bad.we cant bear its quality ,in the other hand. sometime it cut some pser's wonderful ending so we cant see the whole combo such as meteor 's combo.the ending is ex ta>fl ta>fl ta>fl ta but cut into ex ta>flta.
so we call for other way to watch .

Hi Guys,
Yeah im sorry about putfile, i noticed a few people had some problems with it. Unfortunately youtube takes ages for the video to get uploaded and loaded up, and when you put many videos up at the same time it takes days to load up fully, so thats the reason why i put it on putfie because it's fast to upload. If anybody wants to give me youtube links or other streaming sites i don't mind replacing the links.
Thanks -

Eriror and Scott Shaputis are really good, both fluid and make the moves perfectly. I don't know why Scott was saying he sucked last night, but he doesn't. Nice music Sfsr, I laughed. Oh- and you were good too!

lol, so many videos don't work for me.. D:
Well, to say that I am surprised would be an understatement.
I had trouble watching videos on putfile, and even with the sharebee downloads, they wouldn't play on my media players.
However, I watched all of the UPSB videos, which is good enough for me. Wow, scott you have improved..I'm definetely the sub now...but sort of afraid to participate lol everyone has gotten so good! I can't really judge but, I'm sure those comments on youtube are false predictions. you should be a very big challenge for minwoo. (couldn't watch his video)
Eriror, i talked about it on MSN. you never cease to impress me. I watched ayatori's video (albeit a bit choppy, but smoother than the other ones) and I think you won. Don't let the comments on youtube get to you. Unless I missed something in the low framerate of putfile, there was a lot of content packed into that video, and you should win. (at least for technical skill)
I've always thought you were under credited for your abilities. The ariels were just great, and the ending was swell. I can't perdict because Golfza's video isn't working for me -_______-;
very nice vgg, i love how your pinky sticks up when you do your palm down tricks -

Hey guys/girls,
I've compiled all the videos into one, easy-to-download, archive. HIGH QUALITY VIDEOS.
I've tagged each battle with a number, which I call the battle ID. Each video also contains in its filename the ID of the battle it belongs to, for quick lookup and ease of use.
The videos are regrouped by teams and are located in seperate directories. Each team directory has the list of all battle IDs this team is involved in in its name for reference.
The information about each battle is detailed in a text file for each group.
The file is ~90mb.
You need DivX and XviD to view the .avi videos. Look for those codecs.
Enjoy.

.....
.....
2.5?!
you know what would be awesome?
alternating bakfall 1.0-1.5-2.0-2.5, where the first one is 1.0 and the last one (pinky) is 2.5
that would show a tremendous amount of pen control.
and you have to get those rotations right (can't do the last one 3.0 or something) otherwise it shows you don't control the exact rotation of the spin.
the alternating modifer is one I coined for interchanging between tricks or rotations in continuous tricks, but in this case it also applies even if there is no repetition involved.
a harder one would be
alternating bakfall 1.0-2.0-4.0-8.0 (<-- I call it "Power 2 Bakfall")
a funnier one would be
the FIBONACCI BAKFALL 1.0-1.0-2.0-3.0 ----> BACK OF HAND TRANSFER ---> BAKFALL 5.0-8.0-13.0-21.0 --> CONTINUE etc... *HEAD EXPLODES* -

Truly, I wasn't surprised kpsa lost. Their videos weren't as good as those they were going up against. I thought nory would have won though -- gotta love the bak revs -- but banz did have his nifty aerials going on.
Go UPSB! We're doing great. -
Date: Tue, Feb 19 2008 02:35:55
Damn, KPSA didn't win any of their matches?
GPC, JEB, and Thaispinner tied for second?
and Swespin victory was unexpected. xD
Anyways, Good Job everyone! Round 2 will be even more epic. -

Looks like Eriror had nothing to worry about after all, beat ayatori =P. T_N_C... Was no surprise, his combo was just too good.
Wow, Swespin's really good. Sfsr is leading a strong team =O. -

Very nice turn out for UPSB.
I'm really not surprised KPSA lost all their matches. Banz took down so many people in the WT so his win wasn't a surprise.

Date: Tue, Feb 19 2008 06:23:59
Some unexpected results but good job UPSB, SS and PPP.
SS's spinners have dominating smoothness that just owns. Maybe we'll see them in the finals eh?
FPSB probably would have faired better if they had Fratleym in the line up. Too bad.
PPP Good job, great spinners, Rarka owned!
KPSA I thought their combos were boring >.> Yeah Nory did sick conts, but that's it...he didn't do anything else, that can't win a fight, especially against someone as kick ass as Banz. Didn't expect 0 wins but that's what you get with those combos.
Way to go, 2nd round will be very important, but this time we'll have DaThroat as well ;P -

Hi, CrAsh,you should make the judgement standard to the view so we are more receptive to such an outcome。 -
Date: Tue, Feb 19 2008 13:35:36
Group 1 results for me are pretty expected.
I'm satisfied with the 3 wins. Scott, don't let that loss affect you. Minwoo came out of nowhere and turned out a video that's in the top 5 of the first round, GPC really caught me with a good matchup. I just didn't know they had someone of that skill in their lineup, my bad.
For instance, I think I could have moved TNC to fight GPC and Scott to THPSC and I might have won all 4.
The palemaster vs stuhl batter could have gone either way, but I favored PSH.
Not surprised with CNStar winning, his video was great.
Group 2 results are a surprise for me.
I know KPSA didn't perform at their highest level, but I think they did enough to win at least 2 out of 4. I think Xien and Uriel did enough to win, but it could have gone either way, they got unlucky.
For all intent and purpose, they're eliminated from the World Cup. They NEED 4 wins in Round 2, and even if they do, they must pray that the 3 out of the 4 teams in front of them don't exceed a cumulative 4-4 record, and even then they must hope that they win it in the tiebreaker. It's just not gonna happen. I think what's even more disappointing for them is that they didn't even play KTH and Taeryong in the first round... looks like they really needed all their big guns to win. But now it's too late.
SS winning all 4 is very surprising. I felt that they didn't have the best videos out there, but were beneficiary of some very good matchups and took advantage of it.
I had them winning only 1 battle, but Sfsr, Ceedgee and Alan matches could have gone either way. They're now in very good shape to make the semis. I suppose it was excellent managing to be able to get the matchups just right so that you win them all barely. One managing mistake could have cost one or two matches.
PPP winning is really not surprising. I had them winning 3 as well. I thought they were only a 2-men team (Rarka and Przemo) but they proved to me that they had excellent depth and this is what pulled them through.
On the contrary, PZKCF really lacks any depth. Their level drops so much after Meteor and Hunlanlin that they could only hope to win 2. Furthermore, Hunlanlin was fighting the best video of the first round, so they really had no chance to win more... They are also practically eliminated.
I had FPSB winning 3, but the difference is the Tikle/Alan match which I felt should have gone to Tikle. Still, with 2 wins, they are in decent shape to make it through the next round but they MUST win both their battles against SS and PPP.
I actually like our 3-1 record better than 4-0. It means that we're in a good shape to continue, but we're not there yet and must work hard. It'll make our spinners more focused and produce better videos. 4-0 would have made them cocky. Plus we have 3 teams with 2-2 right at our tail, we can't let up.
Managers, don't forget to submit your lineup to Crash for Round 2. Deadline is Saturday February 23. -

It's the only abbreviation of SweSpin we have, and people are lazy :P
@ Zombo, I think we had a mix of the following:
- excellent managing (lol :D actually the "managing" has been handled just as much by the other 3 members participating in this round as by me)
- underestimation from the other teams
- awesome penspinners
- good luck
Which results in 4/4 wins. Now to the upcoming problem; round 2. -

Date: Tue, Feb 19 2008 17:01:00
@ Zombo: Saying SweSpin only won thanks to fortunate match ups is very rude of you. People have underestimated SweSpin, as usual, and they paid for it.
To quote the world tournament video I made last year when all SweSpinners except me got knocked out the first round due to very questionable judging:
"Beware of next year. Because we can't wait to get our revenge" -

WTF
KPSA should have won at least 2 matches
XIEN should have won and NORY should have won with banz delay in jumping tricks in the end should have taken off points vs. norys conts.
and I say XIENs combo was better be cause he had more diffcult tricks in his come than Thelian and Thelian
had a lttile delay in Middle finger around or whatever it is called he just did easy tricks fast
vs Xien little slower than Thelian but had difficult moves
results are unacceptable
koreans are says "this is like PS olympic when Micheal (or someone) won the freestyle with a handspin which had lots of delays"
This is not just unlucky in judging, judges are bribed or something -
Date: Tue, Feb 19 2008 20:27:21
Joshy, with all due respect, smoothness isn't the only factor in penspinning. It weighs as much as difficulty, creativity, and all other kinds of stuff. To say someone should have won just because he had a small mistake in a middlearound just doesn't cut it when he's slightly superior in other sections. I understand what you mean, but please. Don't start a war over this. I was surprised as well, man. =/
Oh, and Xien's video was easier than Thelian's combo, in my opinion... -
Date: Tue, Feb 19 2008 20:38:47
now i know why the judges didnt want to get known by everyone
everything is relative. i think we dont have bad judges >.>. why should crash (or zombo) take people who dont know how to judge for a tournament like this?
maybe times have changed. it isnt anymore this "speed/difficult" spinning which owns.
i'm really surprised that i won. but a lot of people say, that it's legitimated.
so, like eriror said, creativity is today as much as difficulty or smoothness.
there are just too much spinners who do always the same tricks (difficult and smooth) but without creativity.
i love norys spinning. he absolutely has stlye. his tricks are difficult. but that's it. they are difficult... anything else? no, he's always doing the same.
banz was just very very creativ. maybe his aerials werent perfect all the time... maybe there was a break in the ending... but its just innovativ! these things will give PS a special progress. new tricks!
.too much words.
(just to let you know: i also would have prefered Nory. i just like him and his busts/conts :/) -

Yeah, I would have gone with Nory too. Those conts are difficult -- tougher than aerials imo. Banz does rock though, can't wait for him to use his multiple spin tricks.
-
Date: Tue, Feb 19 2008 21:06:16
the problem with banz is...
his camera -.-
i really, really would LOVE it to see his spinning with a really good cam quali and a background which is suitable for is red pen
well it got better (in the past i really wasnt able to see his pen with this ugly grey background), but it's just not enough for his skill! -

Why whine over the results? Nothing yoou can change anyway. Apparently you (KPSA) were not good enough.
I think you should talk it over on your board before you blame the judges.
Have a nice day

KPSA obviously took these losses hard. But they are kind of a relatively isolated board, and thus they have their own image of "perfect" combos.
Sure, some of the decisions are controversial, but judges are judges. -

To quote the world tournament video I made last year when all SweSpinners except me got knocked out the first round due to very questionable judging:
"Beware of next year. Because we can't wait to get our revenge"
hey man, I was actually complementing SweSpin, no need to act aggressive. I said you guys took advantage of the situation, you actually stepped up and showed what you can do. Don't take it the wrong way. If you didn't understand, I'm actually saying the same thing as you; they gave you fortunate matchups because they underestimated you and you maid them pay, like you said.
BTW about the fortunate matchups part, that's not me saying it. It's an actual quote from Sfsr in the PS Magazine.

I think KPSA could have won 2 battles too, but it really could have gone either way and you'd have people complain about it. -

Well, the results were certainly a bit unexpected, I'll admit.
I think overall the level of difficulty, smoothness, creativity, and presentation have all gone up, and it's great to see the boundaries of PS being pushed. You are all winners in my opinion.
Obviously, nobody likes losing, and there will always be questions that would be raised regarding the results, but please let's not turn this into a war.
I think the surprising outcome of this first round is due to the new format of competition (in which you can't just win by treating it like a 1 vs 1 tournament). I'm sure some teams underestimated the importance of this, while others put them to full use.
But the controversy is probably caused because of the unclear judging criteria. Perhaps if they were to be disclosed, people would know what areas they might be lacking in, and can prepare differently for the next round.
Again, I really enjoyed watching all the videos, and hope we can all discuss things in a mature manner to keep thing from turning ugly.

Awesome, UPSB are in with a really great chance!
Keep up the good work all the UPSB guys!!!
Oh and well done the other boards that did well like such as Swespin, but I gotta support UPSB you know... -

There is one judge from each board. The judges from group 1 judge the videos in group 2, and vice versa. Based on the criteria here on UPSB (I think in the wiki?), they decide who they think had a better video. This means 5 votes / battle, so most of the results with KPSA involved were probably 2 - 3 in the other teams favor. That there is one judge from each board also means there is a person from KPSA. I expect you trust that person, and so you should also trust the judges from other boards.QUOTE (Nyberg @ Feb 19 2008, 10:08 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Why whine over the results? Nothing yoou can change anyway. Apparently you (KPSA) were not good enough. There's no need for them to blame anything on the judges (since there's nothing to blame) but neither is there need for you to state that KPSA isn't good enough. Anyone from the team would normally have owned me, had they not saved KTH and TaeRyong they would've owned me, but now they chose Uriel and I at least got a chance to win.
I think you should talk it over on your board before you blame the judges.

I was thinking about that a few days ago, that we would've been judged losses in all matches and that now other SweSpinners would be here complaining about it, rather than Joshy complaining about KPSAs losses ^^

You make PPPs and FPSBs winnings sound very decerved, while SweSpin just won thanks to luck.

sorry man, I focused on talking about matchups because this is what I'm the most interested. I designed this format with the intention that excellent managing and strategy/tactics would be rewarded with good results. Because if you really think about it, that's the difference between a team game and an individual game, plus the fact that team spirit and morale affects the performance of the players. SweSpin is the best example of this in the first round so I'm proud that the format is working well.
Obviously you guys did a good job with the actual videos too.
All I'm saying is that your managing gave you favorable matchups. If you didn't go with exactly this lineup, you might have lost a few matches. -

This is not just unlucky in judging, judges are bribed or something
Hi Joshy,
Im sorry about the outcome, but i can assure you the judges were selected because they can and are able to judge because they are good pen spinners themselves. I was supprised about the kpsa results but i respect the judges opinions and their judging. The judging was made using the criteria on the upsb wiki.
I've spoken to the kpsa team members and i sorted it out with them. Nory was telling me they just have to try harder in the next round. He was telling me they will have to use their best 4 spinners if the next round if they want to have a chance in progressing.
Good luck guys,
By the way, line ups for the 2nd round are due in for Tuesday 26th February, so next week on tuesday.
Thanks,

I thought Ayatori's video is really good, not sure why you wanted to see more lol, i thought it had all the ingredients a spinning video should have, smooth, fast, creative, style etc. Well there is always round 2 so we can see what everybody produces, should be interesting
Take care -

Thanks for clearing that up. Sound alot better now. Since you are the central figure around here people will act like you do, and I'd rather not see people interpret your previous post as "SweSpin only won due to luck"
Oh and by the way (sorry, offtopic, just want to clear things up), you PMed Ceedgee and said I banned you from our IRC channel for no reason. Not entirely true. The only time you wrote in the channel was to promote your radio shows. That would get you kickbanned from most other IRC channels aswell. So I banned you for a month. -

well you never told me directly why so uhhh yeah but I kinda knew it was that
btw how can "Favourable matchups" be only about luck? It has elements of luck but it's also about skill. If it was only about luck, then there would be no point in managing! If getting favourable matchups is just about luck, we might as well randomize all the matchups like in the World Tournament.
The point of doing management is to minimize the effect of luck, so that the teams feel like they have some control over the matchups. Clearly management has an impact on the game, which is why it benefited SweSpin and affected KPSA.
Never once did I even mentionned SweSpin got lucky. I said they got favourable matchups, which is a combination of luck and good management. It's not totally luck. -
