I started to spin pen from december (2007). I really like it and want to go for pro skills. But there is one problem - in summer i do freestyle with BMX and mountain bikes. So now im afraid to hurt my fingers. Becouse if i will hurt them - no pro skills for me then. So its kinda hard to choose - pen spinning or bike things. So now i dont know what to do... hanged.gif sad.gif

If you haven't injured your fingers yet, you probably won't hurt them permanently.I would imagine you fall most when you are just starting to do BMX?

    BTW, December is vcool.JPG

    Strike!

Yes i saw that, what can bikes do to you.

Tim, yes when you start to learn things you fail more frequently but when you have learned to do some basic and intermediate tricks, you want to go higher, so here it starts to get dangerous.

Well if you break your fingers then you will have your decision made for you. Do em both until they break.

Pen spin while riding your bike. That would be cool.

    i can, not hard.

depends what tricks your doing while BMXing. if you dont want to risk breaking a finger, dont do a handstand on your bike, etc. i feel off my bike once in 7th grade and broke my pinky's growth plate in 3 spots, but i can spin fine, and i spin with my left hand...

you just have to be careful of what tricks you try, or dont fall.

Omg I just have same problem, I'm also worried about to crash. I drives motocross and downhill mountainbikes in the forest.

I have halfway quit to drive motocross because I'm worried about to hurt myself so badly that I'll not be able to spin again.. and that feeling isn't nice ^^

Well, I'll keep doing downhill and stuff like that anyway ^^

Dont worry, if you lose your fingers you still have toes. Unless you lose those first... <.<

If you got the time, why don't you take up both?

As for me, I still prefer to pen spin cool.gif

Just make sure you seek immediate medical attention if you hurt yourself. I think David didn't take it quite as serious as he should have and it got infected as a result.

Come on.... What are the chances that you will actually hurt your fingers riding a bike?

Seriously though, I've broken my left 1st metacarpal twice, right 1st once, left and right 5th twice each, and then my right 1st Proximal phalange twice, and most recently my right 1st distal phalange.

Those are my only hand injuries. Most of my bad injuries have been head, face, knee or ankle injuries. I've had about 8 concussions, broke my nose 6 times and I have synthetic PCL ligaments in my left knee with 6 titanium screws attaching them to the bone. Broken collar bones and some other minor stuff. So I've had a couple knee surgeries and a couple of nose surgeries and some surgeries on my thumb.

I did take the last break seriously, unfortunately, all three of the doctors that I went to in the first few days failed to recognize the severity of the infection. I knew something was wrong so I kept calling doctors telling them that a giant blister was doubling in size everyday on my thumb. The doctors all said 'lets wait and see', thats doctor code for 'I don't know what the f*&k to do.' After a week of this I checked myself into the ER and it was finally drained, but the infection was already in the broken bone. One of the many problems with the medical system in the US is that, legally, it is safer for a doctor to do nothing if they are not sure what to do.

Most ppl don't get hurt this much, you don't have to push your limits to such a level to have fun, it just depends on your personality type, I unfortunately have Mat Hoffman syndrome.

Generally, when I'm injured I can focus on ps, but when its a hand injury then that plan just falls apart.

BTW, speaking of riding and spinning at the same time, we almost did a clip in The Book of Cool of me doing a sonic rise to bak 1.5 while doing a grip ride. The idea was going to be, zoom in and show the pen spinning trick and then zoom out to reveal that I am standing on my handlebars. They decided to keep the activities separate, I hooked up my friend Byron Anderson with the BMX street part in that video.

Ok, so I just pulled a triple reply in this massive 'Kam like' post.
