Fundamental Tricks / Sonic palm-down

Hi. Maybe it's just me, but I am having difficulty doing some tricks (sonic family) when I put my palm facing downwards. I practiced sonic with my palm facing me (hand sideways).

This is a newbie question (please forgive me), but can anyone give me a tip how to go about this? My pen keeps on flying around laugh.gif

    Thanks!

first learn the trick in normal hand position. than practice with your hand palm-down. try practicing with COP above your hand, 'cause most find it easier to do palm-down tricks that way. and try to do sonic without your thumb (without building that pressure), but only use charge motion.

Waddya mean the COP above my hand?

Thanks for the reply by the way smile.gif

I had trouble with this at first as well. I don't really know what else to tell yah but just practice. Make sure you are holding the pen and moving the pen the same way as you would do it palm up as well.

Ah. I see. Well, I just thought maybe there's a neat trick to do it. So practice, it is.

    Thanks. wink.gif

practice over and over at different angles

just slowly tilt your hand down and then eventually it'll be in the palm down position
if you have to, close your eyes so you dont' know exactly whether or not it's palm down so you dont' have that mentality tongue.gif even if you know that your hand is down just by moving it, not seeing it may help...(well, that's of course if you can do the sonic wiht your eyes closed)

    COP = center of pen
keep most of the pen above your hand, because it will slide down a bit because of gravity smile.gif

When I first tried sonic palm down to start learning how to lead into stuff like shadow and stuff, I had trouble with it since I wasn't used to it.

Just practice with palm down, you will get used to it, and will be able to switch in between the two ways of doing it. Like any trick, practice makes perfect ! tongue.gif

It's normal having diffculties doing some tricks palm-down. But it's really easy once you get use to the trick. I actually learned Sonic palm-down first =O. Same goes to other moves (Twisted Sonic, Double Charge Etc...)

for somebody palm down sonic is hard because of the gravity

well yeah it is sometimes hard because of gravity

I met this trouble at first too,and the pen goes slipping down everytime I do sonic palm down...
Just practice for a few weeks and the trick will be perfect.

It's not just the gravity, just your mind getting used to the new orientation.

palm down is wai easier for me.

gravity doesnt rly affect sonic that much. the fact that it is so fast (super-sonic fast XD) doesnt allow gravity to have too much affect on it.

Everything is affected by gravity... A fast sonic is not an exception.

actually, the moment and speed of a fast pen may defy gravity a bit eh?

Learn it without using pressure first.

  21. pen_MAKer

if you know how to do sonic 'palm left' (if you're a right handed) and can do it pretty smooth i don't see the problem on doing it palm down

  22. Rorix
    Date: Tue, Apr 15 2008 08:33:54

Knowing how to do a sonic in your non-dominant hand isn't going to help you adjust to the change in orientation in your dominant hand.

ya its AFFECTED by gravity, but if u go superfast, the momentum overcomes it smile.gif i can do sonic rise/fall harmonic with palm down.. how do u think the ppl do sonic-shadow combos? only by doin it palm down.

umm like everything else i learnt it from repetitive practise and eventually its just natural and easy

try doing normal sonic continuously and gradually tilt your hand till its palm down ]

thats how i learned it yo.gif

If you're doing sonic without thumbflap pressure, it would be easier if you jerked your hand slightly to the left. That way, there's a little momentum behind it.

  28. Pen-Ninja
    Date: Sat, Aug 9 2008 06:44:08

learn to kinda catch the sonic in 13 rather than just throwing it over as most people do when they 1st learn
also try not to bend 2 all the way down, that way the pen has something to go over

  29. Outsmash
    Date: Mon, Aug 11 2008 11:13:00

Never use thumbflap pressure for palm down sonic...try doing it fasterr than usual. You should try grabbing the pen in the 13 slot faster than usual.

It's possible it's not really a sonic at all but a neobak (I just recently realized that what I thought was a shadow was actually a neobak). Say, is the pen spinning clockwise or counterclockwise?

    you wrong....
    shadow: anti clockwise
    neo bak/bak: clockwise
You'd end up getting a shadow if you try a 1.5 sonic. thats basically what shadow is...
Neobak is quite different from the shadow...the spin..starting position..everything..

Your quite possibbly the most ignorant person i have met, jk, good observation but it's also a complete failure, a sonic is a sonic, a neobak is a neobak,=] tricks dont get different names jsut because your hands a facing a different way, unless you want to call stuff upside down or right sideup, or sideways tricks...

Hopefully you learn the sonic before learning the neoback... huh.gif =\ I didn''t even know what neo bak was when I learned the sonic... it might help to learn tricks in progression, to avoid confusion, and mix up s in names and such...

a rather strange comment honestly, but once you learn the sonic 23-12 palm down, if you have already learned the shadow 12, than the shadow 23~>12 seems a lot easier.

I think its harder, because then you pen is used to not getting out of the slot and getting to spin on top, so it catches and takes more practice ;D

mebe for u....worked gr8 for me...

  42. shoeman6
    Date: Sat, Sep 20 2008 13:49:56

WElll I think it might be easier for palm down because most of the time, when newbs learn, the pen flys from there hands in the 3-1 slot inbetween the sonic, so when you do it palm down, the pen doesnt go flying, HOWEEVER a newb learning palm down, wont get the same conic rotatio and follow through you would get from normal palm sideways =] so if youa re having truble with pen flying try it palm down ;D

  43. Anemia
    Date: Sun, Sep 21 2008 17:15:16

I think you should really "master" the trick first, then try it palm down. Use a little flick of the wrist, or don't use TF, use charge motions instead.

  44. shoeman6
    Date: Fri, Sep 26 2008 03:21:21

Many new spinners neeed to use the thumb flap en order to build enough energy, otherwsie it just wont work.

  45. j147l
    Date: Sat, Sep 27 2008 00:40:58

You don't necessarily have to learn it with TF pressure. I was a bit more unusual, and I actually learned Shadow before I learned the sonic(if you're learning sonic, don't learn shadow first, its not good); so I had little or no trouble doing a palm down.

  46. shoeman6
    Date: Sat, Sep 27 2008 00:57:37

yes, but new spinners have trouble getting enough momentum, especially sicne most of them arent using mods...

  47. ToastyRage
    Date: Sat, Sep 27 2008 14:40:52

Yeah you should definitely make sure you are getting a good rotation sideways before you move to palm down.

  48. shoeman6
    Date: Sat, Sep 27 2008 15:07:41

after you move t palm down though, it may be easier to learn new tricks =]

The problem with learning palm down first is that gravity makes the pen even hard to control when you first learn it =]

  49. Anemia
    Date: Tue, Sep 30 2008 20:31:22

I would say you have to learn to do a Sonic without using your TF first.. your probably putting too much pressure.

  50. shoeman6
    Date: Wed, Oct 1 2008 01:37:09

its not pressure people put to much of its the realse from the thumb flap, make sure you lift the flap slightly as you release for a smoother release that doesnt send the pen flying.

Anyone of u started learning shadow first b4 sonic? cos i did that and it was weird but effective cos if u learn a shadow 1st just cut out the 0.5 rev on the back of ur hand and catch it immediately to do a sonic...well thats what i did tongue.gif

  52. shoeman6
    Date: Fri, Oct 3 2008 12:36:09

I'm pretty shore that isn't a sonic.... do you have a video? your description seems more like its more of an arround....

  53. master chief
    Date: Sat, Oct 4 2008 13:20:12

sorry i dun vid myself but at first when i learnt sonic i kinda just did a not so good shadow but eventually i caught it b4 it even spun 0.5 rev on the back of my hand. the charge momentum was used to bring the pen across 2 de other side which is not and around...but now i do it differently though...

  54. Glamouraz
    Date: Fri, Oct 10 2008 08:23:13

You can try doing it palm down by just jerking your hand slightly towards you and put your fingers in the sonic position.

Don't jerk it too hard though.

Straighten your index and ring finger and bring them together while bringing our middle finger downwards.

You can try this but after doing it, I find it hard to do shadow 23-12 cause it always becomes a sonic 23-12.

  55. xchuboi
    Date: Sun, Oct 19 2008 00:25:30

i've always had trouble with this trick so ur not the only one. I would suggest that you keep practicing. Good Luck.

  56. Crazy Demon
    Date: Fri, Nov 21 2008 21:18:18

You need to be able to do the sonic without using the thumbflap. Afterwards, its just practice, practice, practice.
