Just press the '-' button on the top right corner of the shoutbox. -

you can already show/hide it click the "-" button in the top-right of the shoutbox, in the titlebar

Or just get rid of it? Why not use IRC? It's less clunky/unresponsive. If I wanted to leave a little note, I'd use PM. -

It's simple. If you dont like the shoutbox HIDE it. If you know how to use it and have read the rules SHOW it.

It takes up a **** load of bandwith, refreshing every 10 seconds 24/7? There should be a way to turn it off, not just hide it.

that's a good point, if we run into bandwidth trouble, removing the shoutbox would be the first thing we do. I don't think theres a way to turn it off though.
We can also readjust the flood/refresh rate. Right now I think the rate is set at 20, 10 for flood.
