Fundamental Tricks / Which Finger Is Better To Do ThumbAround With?

  1. Guitrum

When you spin your ThumbAround, which finger do you push it with? Me personally, I use my middle finger, but does it make a difference if you use your index finger?

The middle finger is taught the most for TA Nor, but proficiency with the index finger is important for a lot of combos/hybrids and for flexible spinning in general. Use of the ring & pinky fingers are not as often used, but the ability to do so with them may still be helpful every once and a while.

agreed, sketching. for most TA's the middle is used, but for combos like K4LC, use of the index is necessary.

    Kam's 4 loop combo doesn't have a ThumbAround in. huh(1).gif

Middle and index are easiest and you should be able to do it with either. Ring and pinky push are quite difficult, however, if learnt, you then have more possibilities. So, middle and index are best to learn to do it with, however, learning to do it with any finger will be better as you won't be limited at all with you TAs.

Middle finger is good because when u want to learn harmonica u have to use ur index finger or #2 to push it back and forth...

I've practiced with everything but pink tongue.gif, but I mainly use middle. I use index to help me lead into fingerless since I feel that it's much easier.

well for Harmonic you don't rily need to use your middle finger cos i can do it with my index but its kinda awkward blink.gif

Personally, middle feels the most natural, but the index kind looks cooler.

the midle finger is better, since i think that the index finger is ts....but it's not dificult to do it with 3 and 4

I use my index since it is closer to my thumb.

this is an interesting concept that i've put a great deal of thought into
through my observations i've found that the index puts more 'spin' on the pen, while the pinky puts more 'around' on the pen. this can be noted by the fact that you can much more easily perform a thumbaround closer to the COB using your pinky, whereas your index might not make it.

now, since i dont see much of a problem with getting the pen around, i highly prefer the index

also, i feel that the index is much more useful based on simple logic: when doing a combo, why would you stop at the 23 slot to do a middle finger push? i makes more sense to continue your combo into the 12 slot, then do the thumbaround.
i also think it looks better

however, when doing a harmonic, or just some sort of counter, it is better to use the middle finger, since you most likely just used the index for whatever led into it; therefore it's hard to move it over to push the pen back real quick

i can also use the index for harmonics- it's just weird

Index seems to fit into more combos and makes it easier (for me) to do ext TA because it just falls into place
middle is how people usually start and is easiest for the harmonic

  15. AwonW

I'm more used to pushing with the index since it's much easier to use in a combo but I can push with any finger if I wanted to happy.gif

K4LC uses thumb spin 1.5 in the last part. You still need to do the TA action to get a thumb spin.
For me I use index for K4LC, and Tornado. But normally my TAs are done with my middle finger.

I learned with my middle but after some time linking it to other tricks, you automatically just switch to index.

  18. TeddyTemptation
    Date: Wed, Mar 12 2008 21:21:01

well i use solely the middle finger, but i use the index finger for variations like ta ext or ta release.

mainly because whenever i do a ta i'm used to doing ta rev, so my index needs to be ready.

but i do it better with index

I think people should learn it with the index finger....
if they have problems, then learn with middle finger first, then transfer...
index finger TA are most used in combos wink.gif

I think if you are learning the TA for the first time, stick with the middle finger, infact...i dont even move the middle finger, and instead just move my thumb down.

later on, you will just get used to using all kinds of different methods to get that pen around your thumb.

Stick with the middle to start, the rest will come with time.

Hmm... usually I had been forming a middle finger TA habit,, but when everyone in my class uses the same finger,,
I've been using the ring & index finger juzt to look a bit diffrent tongue.gif
but pinky's the hardest finger to use TA with.. Never used in any combo I developed with..

  34. PwntNoob

Middle is most comfrotable...but if you use index..it makes it easier to do Ext TA

however....doing ext ta with middle and index make the trick itself look different..

it's easier to do multiple thumbarounds with the index.
    I think
Doing that trick with the middle seems less smooth; Feels like it needs more resetting.
And to do continuous extended thumbarounds, it is definitely easier with the index.
So I guess continuous TA tricks are easier with the index finger?

it just depends what u prefer
some people prefer doing it with middle
    and some not

I can do all fingers. Middle and Ring are my best, but the index and pinky are coming too now. Pinky owns tongue.gif
I learned with the middle, but I don't really care, the motion is the same if you just move your hand a little smile.gif

  42. Xuj

It'll depend on which slot the pen resides in. But for starters I'd suggest the middle finger.

The middle, its spacial distance compared to other figners makes it more favorable, either that, or your first finger, but the jmiddle finger i recommeneded and the most naturall feeling =]

While learning K4LC i found the TA [p 1] extremely difficult. I did get it though. So i think wether you want it or not, Index somehow helps a lot during combos.

I gotta learn cardiod with TA [p 1]. Is it even possible??

It helps if you start the push as outside of the pen as possible. Also, when you learn it, it helps to keep your ring, middle, and index bent in, but you'll have to kick this habit later on when you master the Thumbaround with the pinky push.

Pinky push cardioid is simple if you can do thumbaround with the pinky...The next part is learning how to grab the pen with T1 after the thumbaround.
