Presentation / Performing while Standing

  1. Vall3y
    Date: Wed, Feb 20 2008 21:55:46

Often when I want to perform in front of someone or a small crowd, I am expected to do it standing.
Just then I realize that I'm so used to pen spinning while sitting, often with the hand lying on a table. The drop is also much more intimidating than it would've been if I were sitting.
Any one else has this? Pen spinning looks more impressive while sitting anyway I think, but sitting doesn't usually go hand to hand with performing in front of people, you know what I'm saying?

    i know what you mean
sometimes i just spin while standing when i'm home though just to have a change of scenery instead of spinning in my chair or on my bed all the time
so when i was spinning while in my kitchen, i was much more afraid of dropping my pen cause it would break more easily
that's why when i'm spinning while standing, i just do it over a carpet or rug of some sort

well spinnign while sitting is easier than standing
but spinning while running... imo is the easiest.. i could do crazy combos i couldn't do while standing or walking or sitting
and i didn't drop it at all

I've actually had this problem exactly.

People constantly ask how I do this stuff, but they wait until we're outta class to do this. Then we're outside with no desks around and I can't sit D=

Then they say I suck cause I'm not used to doing tricks standing up >____<

If you're scared of dropping, make sure your mod is durable. BICtories, comssas, flexible MXs, MPFXs, I've noticed are very durable.

i got so used to that that i couldn't do it sitting down for awhile... =/

just walk around with an unbreakable mod in your pockets (i use a pencil) and from time to time while walking maybe or just standing somewhere start to spin it,,
you can even practice standing up on purpose but it feels kinda weird i know.

will anyways i do that do. imagine someone just ask you to show pen spinning.. you cant possibly just sit down or find a table suddenly to show off your skills. right?

the bad thing about standing up is that if you drop tyhe pen it would get damaged more

  11. Invincibleman
    Date: Thu, Feb 21 2008 15:20:28

When I have to spin while standing in line or some thing I just do simple tricks that don't cause too much of a scene so people don't start watching. Plus I know I won't drop the pen with some tricks. It is always embarrassing to drop your pen while standing in line.

its not just the damage to the pen, its having to pick it up.
    dont drop the soap pen
i guess learning to spin while standing is essential, but its always better to sit down, not just for the sake of comfort

this is because the pen is short. so actually spinning a drumstick looks moe presentable.. theberzh is a good example... heh

I don't usually spin when I'm standing,I often spin on the bed before going to sleep.
I mean,I don't like to spin while I'm standing, cause if the pen drops,I need to bend down and pick up the pen,and that sucks. (I'm lazy XD)

    Is that a game show?

I like spinning while standing because I like to pace around. When I practice Bakfall, I find it much easier to do while I'm standing :x
And about not wanting to drop it too far, I jsut hold my hand over my bed, so I don't have to bend down too far.

yes it was a double charge and yes even i could have done that. i used to do infinities all infinities while walking to class or double charge. then i kinda figured it made me look way too nerdy.

Just as with all aspects of penspinning; all it takes is practice. Nowadays, at times I can find it easier to spin while standing than when sitting. Gives you more room to execute tricks.

    I totally what you mean.

I used to find it hard to spin while standing, and I still do, but I just take out my pen while going back and forth classes during passing period and do small combos/tricks and I think I''m getting used to spinning pen while walking/standing.

    Sitting is definitely the easiest.

laying down is nice, but when is anyone gonna see you do that?

i really feel no difference standing or sitting, but when you're standing and it drop it it's like... crap.
and everyone kinda laughs at you and it's like haha he dropped it

if you're sitting and u drop u can pick it up in like a second and it doesnt matter too much

  27. Kam
    Date: Wed, Mar 5 2008 09:52:18

Spinning while standing, sitting down, or over a table are all essential skills to have as a pen spinner. I don't recall any PS gig I've done that actually let me pick whether I wanted to spin over a table or not. In most cases it had to be standing up. I even spun over a pool huh.gif

Anyways, spinning while standing has its pros and cons...you just need to get used to them.

    Cons:
    - More pressure because the drops are higher (make sure your pen can take the impact or use a different pen)
    - uses more energy (obviously, since you have to remain standing, and also keep your arm up)

    Pros:
    - You have more time to save a drop (an arm's length). On a table, the pen hits the table almost instantly, giving you little time to correct your mistake.
    - More room for Infinities, air tricks, etc.

Now, from my experience, you can work around the cons, so that spinning while standing does not become an issue at all.

For the drops, you don't necessarily have to be embarrassed or feel bad about it. Here are some possibilities if you drop the pen:

    - make a joke: I usually say "and that's the Gravity Drop", or look them in the face and say "you were waiting for that, weren't you?" then you can joke about how they jinxed you. But these are only examples, you have to make a judgment about your audience to see if the jokes might work. Also, please try to make your own joke, these are only funny if people haven't heard them before. I don't want to find out one day that people already heard them before dry.gif

    - get a backup pen on your non-dominant hand, then pick your pen and do two handed spinning

    - if you're talking about something when you drop the pen, grab another pen and continue spinning. Then wait for a chance to use your feed to toss the pen up. (bonus: sometimes, while you're waiting, someone from the audience will pick the pen for you, so you can save your outs for your next drop tongue.gif )

I think the main idea is not to try to cover your drop, but use something else (like a joke, or more amazing tricks) to make people remember your spinning, not your drops. The more you feel bad about dropping, the worse the situation can get. If you act as if it's okay to drop your pen because you're doing something incredibly difficult, people will relate to that and accept your drop. But if you feel embarrassed, then they'll think that drops never happen and start looking down on your skills.

    1. I don't perform in front of people
    2. Yes i am used to having my arm rest on table or desk or something, but i also spin while sitting on the floor. So standing isn't much different.

I think the key factor is the intimidating drop, perhaps it adds stress thus making spinning harder?

it just feels weird for me to spin while standing. I guess it's also because I'm always afraid the pen will get hurt if it'll fall X:

Well, it does feel weird to spin when standing, but it has a special affect to it... for example, Take KTH's vid in the WC... it would look very different, and maybe even not as good as it was.
