    anyway, i cant get it to work... i got as far as clicking the link above the shoutbox and now im stuck lol
    where do i go from here

    i just get this:

    yeah, java is fine... its not my firewall either

    but now, for no reason at all im getting something different

    Unable to connect : java.net.ConnectException : Connection timed out: connect

    now im trying again and its been 2 or 3 mins and ive got nothing at all

    best you can do is download a IRC client like mIRC.

    quakenet is gay because its servers only allow users from the area around that server.
    try one of the other servers in this list:
    http://staff.quakenet.org/servers.phtml
    then type /server (the server hostname here)

    you can continue to use mIRC after 30 days though, you just need to wait 15 secs or what it is and then press "Continue". Or you could download X-Chat 2 instead (it says on the site you need to pay after 30 days, but I haven't ever noticed anything about that).

    Trillian works well smile.gif and you can use AIM, ICQ, Y!M, and MSN on it at the same time
