Fundamental Tricks / How many times did you fail miserably at a sonic?

How many times did you fail miserably at a sonic, before being able to spin one consistently?

I mainly just want to know, 'cause I'm a noob, and I've been working the trick. Unfortunately, (Although I have the basis of the trick-- Let go of the thumb, down in the middle finger, and touch the index to the ring finger.) I consistently drop it, and barely ever finish it well...

    uhh

    nobody counts their failed attempts
    it varies greatly between persons...

so this measure won't help you much.

I don't know how many times I failed the sonic first time, but lets just say that it took me two full days before actually realizing how a sonic worked. tongue.gif

No big deal failing at certain tricks while you are learning, that's how I feel.

    you obviously misread

he said how many times you failed before you got your first sonic right.

don't tell me you got sonic on your first try EVER in life.

I tried sonic lots of times before giving it up. After that, I concentrated just in the Thumbaround. One night, I focused back on the sonic, tried to get it down, but I didn't know how it actually worked. XD. Watched a couple videos, in slow motion, saw the "mechanism" XD, failed miserably again, XD, helped myself with the other hand, and then did my first sonic. xD.

So yeah, I've dropped it.. a lot of times. XD. Lots. xD.

by pure chance i was trying to do some other trick when i was starting out, i did a sonic.
It looked cool so i went online to find out what it was called,
i just repeated what i did the first time and perfect sonic.
    Go me ! cool.gif

3164 times before I made my first ten in a row. I think 15 or 16 of them actually landed more than 1 metre away from me.

Another 8934 times before I got my first hundred in a row.

Who counts? I know it required alot of practice from myself to do it right, and I do remember a couple of times when the pen went flying at least 5 meters.

3rd trick i ever learned. took forever to master (failed like what 50+times?)
but once you get it down you should be able to do sonic 10/10 cool.gif

hm... I spent about 10 days to learn and then suddenly a very good friend showed me through cam and then I could it right away >_<
But within the 10 days I dropped the pen many times and I did not count because I concentrated on succeed, not failure XD
Good luck with your sonic XD *cross finger*

I drum, so i would try learning drum stick twirls. one of them that i learned was the Thomas Lang twirl which ended up being a twisted sonic so even before i started pen spinning i knew twisted sonic. so then, it just took me a day to get sonic after i perfected twisted sonic on a pen. but now my dilema is learning sonic clip... its freakin hard...

it changes alot from one person to another.
it took me about 2 days to MASTER sonic [10/10]

while i just dont get it :\

  27. ToXiC
    Date: Fri, Mar 14 2008 19:44:50

it was pretty hard to do it smooth, maily because i cant do the charge

  28. minimazza
    Date: Sat, Mar 15 2008 10:26:12

I failed so much it was unbelievable, then it suddenly worked for me.

Turned out that you just had to position your fingers, build up pressure and let the pen spin over between your index and middle fingers.

  29. shoeman6
    Date: Tue, Mar 18 2008 03:06:05

I never failed, the sonic is so easy that if you can't get it on your first try you should just give up.
    NOT REALLY...
Sonic really isn't a hard trick, it just takes a little bit of understanding I learned how to do a sonic on my toliet I didn't get exactly what the sonic was andhow the pen moved from one finger to the other.
I recommend watching lots of videos and practicing till your fingers hurt and you feel like crying.

soooo many times. It took me ages to get the mechanism behind it. I've only just got it so I still drop it quite a bit.

I dropped my pen in the sink at my table in the science labs today while trying to do it like 4 times in the space of 10 mins

lol!... people who saw me ps and when I drop they also pointed and laughed at me... omg I nearly lost my hope of trying, but instead I told them if they at least could do better. They say of course "no"... lol... but then I only practice when no one around or when I am alone with my sisters.

I thought it would be hard to learn at first, so I didnt try it. I learned charge years ago... so I nearly mastered finger pass and learned thumb around before I tried to learn sonic. Finally, yesterday, I was bored so I thought I'd try it. In about 5-10 minutes, I was able to get sonic about 3/10 times. Throughout the day I practiced. Now, I can get it about 9/10.

If you're counting your failed attempts, you need to do A LOT more. Once you cant count the failed attemts anymore, you will get the hang of it.

I learned how to do the sonic after watching a youtube video of some german kid explaining how to touch your index finger to your ring finger above and below the middle finger. I had no idea what he was saying, but it helped me out a lot.

Basically, you can do it really easy by holding the pen between the 23 slot, then lower your middle finger down, and your index and ring fingers up, touching the tips of those two fingers together. The pen should easily spin up and around the middle finger. It takes absolutely no force and is just a matter of finger placement.

If I had a penny for everytime I dropped a Sonic, I would be as rich as Bill Gates. Figuratively. rolleyes.gif
I even drop it when I learned how it goes. It's simple, but so hard to do. It's easy for some of us, and its pretty hard for most of us.
Still, don't give up. I found out how to do it when I was bored in school. I just spun it, did a sonic, and was amazed at how it looked!
I never stop doing sonics now.

i don't know, for the sonic (which I just learned today haha) it took me like half an hour to 45 minutes (not perfect, mind you), which is a lot less time than it took for me to learn the thumbaround. (half the time i didn't get how it was supposed to be done haha)

for me, I sort of can't really think about what I'm doing, or else I mess up. -__-"
the little things (the move index and ring finger closer together one really really helps haha) just make it a lot easier.

it was funny, took me a week to realize that the pen went behind the finger between the ring and index cuz i didn't watch eso's videos dry.gif after my friend told me, took me about 1 day to learn it, now i can do it smoothly nearly with all fingers happyy.gif

I do seem to get that a lot. Do it right by accident almost immediately, then not being able to do it again.

You could consider sonics and all other fundamentals/combos/whatevers to be like taking your first steps. You have to crawl (get the basic movements) before you can walk (be able to do the trick but very shakily) before you can run (do the trick on a very regular basis) before you can sprint (do the trick very smoothly and fluently without putting any real thought to what it is you're doing).

Man that philosophy was right off my head... In penspinning terms that is. Would've helped when I was learning the sonic. I'm up to the jogging stage I guess... happy.gif

    Date: Sat, Nov 29 2008 11:33:52

Pressure method took me about 3h, but the charge way took me much longer(about 10h).

  130. Eric

Sonic is a trick where for some people, it only takes a few minutes for them to learn, but for others like me, I had to work on it for hours on end.

Basically, this fundamental trick illustrates the idea of transferring the pen between fingers with the charge motion. Once you master it, you can do it 100% of the time, and you will wonder why it took so long to learn it.

I have the same problem. I'm still working on doing it consistently at super-slomo speed. One thing I can say is that I don't think I could have ever learned this trick without learning the Charge first.

After that, i looked around some and found that trick, so after I'd say about 2 weeks of annoying pen falls, and annoyed classmates (Practicing at school is so time consuming, the day goes by so fast) I learned it well enough to link it into some pretty savvy combos.

well y ou dont touch your index and ring fingers, that would block the pen from passing through. but you slightly move them towards each other. after i understood that concept, i quickly mastered the sonic.

It took me around a week to master the sonic but once I understood the motion of the trick it was a lot easier. It took me so long because whenever I watched any videos of people teaching the sonic it looked to me that there was an extra rotation in there so that's how I tried to do the trick. But once I found out how simple it is I got it pretty quickly. I still haven't learned the Rev Sonic though...

Another 8934 times before I got my first hundred in a row.

did you accually count all the fails?xD
it didn't fall that much by me, but my problem was; that i couldn't get the pen over my middlefinger!

    A lot of times.

Though, only one night or so to learn the thumb-flap method. Not counting the numerous days that I was attempting to do it the wrong way.

Then about 4-7 days to learn the non-pressure method. Didn't really work for me building momentum up with a Charge 23 before trying it. Read the Sonic Normal thread, found a few tips and voila. Thank-you, UPSB.

    Ah, the good old Sonic.
I failed well over 10,000 times (and get this: for most of those fails, I mistook the Sonic for the Inverse Twisted Sonic huh.gif ) before doing one successful Sonic. I didn't learn the TF variant...that just got me doing a 23-12 Pass Normal (which, at first, I thought the Sonic was huh.gif ). Took me maybe one week to learn.
And the girl who sits next to me in math class learned it in 30 seconds flat, just by watching me laugh.gif .
I got PWNED by the Sonic (or, should I say, PWNED by the girl next to me who learned the Sonic).

hahahah, I accidentally learned the sonic

like I would do a idk what it's called...
like a twisted sonic but my index finger would go toward the knuckle side of my hand... like a normal pass but with the charge 23

and I accidentally did a sonic...

my friend then told me I did a sonic lolol angry.gif

i am also learned it by accident

i ask my friend for showing me how to do a sonic...
my friend told me it is just changing while doing charge
i followed the movement and i learned the thumb flap version...within 5 minutes

actually it is quite easy if you learned charge and have the concept of the finger movement tongue.gif

It took me about a week to understand the movement of the mod (the video that I was using to learn didn't explain the movement -.- When I saw a Tioloco's Tutorial I learned the trick)

I remember the day that I learned the sonic, just a few seconds after learn Charge ^^

Why would it be closed? The thread started in 2008 and hasn't been closed yet. Also 12 page threads usually dont get closed.
