Retractable HGG Jell Mod

    Hi, I believe you guys have seen iNoob's and mine ayatori mod substitutes, but the main drawback is that those pens cannot write. I've decided to add on to the Sexy HGG Jell Mod made by me and iNoob, here , by making it retractable, stable, and yet retaining the cool look of an ayatori mod biggrin.gif:D:D

    It basically should like sort of look like an ayatori mod, like this:

    Im going to upload a vid of it clicking soon, and I will throw it around TEK style biggrin.gif.

    Stats:
    COP = COG
    Length = 20cm
    Writable= YES! AND RETRACTABLE!
    Weight=17g-ish

    Materials:
    1 G2 pen ( whole thing)
    1 Zebra Jimne Gel (other name is Hyper Gel)
    1 Uni Laknok Retractable/Pilot Super Grip Inktube + spring ( or any other suitable inktube + spring)

    1 HGG Barrel
    1 Pilot Nextage Tip
    1 Signo Tip
    1 Grip with a funky cutting ( Signo knock type grip or Dr Grip can be used)
    1 toothpick
    sandpaper/file

    To anyone that bitches about how many pens this mods needs, it doesnt really need that many pens. The pens that you would need to buy would be a G2, Zebra Jimne Gel/Hyper Gel) and a Pilot Supergrip/Laknok Retractable. The rest of the materials, most people would have them lying around somewhere, such as a signo tip, hgg barrel, and maybe a spare dr. grip grip? So don't be intimidated by the amount of materials, and it only takes around 20 minutes to assemble the pen, factoring in filing and stuff.

    Parts Required:

    Step 1:

    1. Cut the G2 Barrel at slightly above the kink of the barrel. ( near the clicker part), and right above the screw thread, so you get two parts: the clicker part, and a clear g2 barrel about 3cm long. For the clicker part, cut it in such a way shown in the picture. Ignore the overly long clicker part, the kink should not be included. File it down such that it is of the same width as a hgg barrel, or else when you click, the insert will slide off.

    2.File the front of the HGG barrel (area between tip and grip) such that the cut g2 barrel from step 1 can go over it, and remove the backplug and inktube. File the areas circled in red.

    3. For the G2 clicker part, there should be two plastic parts : one elongated clicker part, ( I shall call it clicker part 1), and the part below it(I shall call it clicker part 2). Cut clicker part 1 in such a way as shown in the picture, to a length of about 1.4cm. Cut the clicker part 2 in such a way as shown in the picture, and also cut off about 0.2cm of the long, thinner part of the clicker part 2 : (the black clicker part 2, blue clicker parts are for reference)

    4. Take the spring from the uni Laknock ball point pen and stretch it. Take a tooth pick and stick it into the back of the inktube. ( Repeat process if you have a Pilot Supergrip)

    5. Roll an insert for the hgg barrel, if required. File the end of the HGG barrel, such that when you take the clicker part with the two plastic parts in it, and push it onto the end of the HGG barrel, it should be a tight fit, and not come loose.

    6. Take the inktube with the tooth pick, and insert it into the hgg barrel. Put the spring on the inktube, hold the pilot nextage tip and test if the retractable mechanism works. It should work, if it doesnt, look for obvious problems such as a too long tooth pick etc.

    7. Remove the grip from the zebra jimne gel, and cut a small portion of it( around 0.9-1cm), and slide it onto the hgg grip area. Roll an insert for the front of the hgg barrel, and slide the g2 barrel onto it. It should be a tight fit. If it is impossible for you to do so, just file down the hgg grip area underneath, until it can fit on.

    8. Over the tip of the hgg barrel, wrap some double-sided tape, such that the pilot nextage tip screws on firmly, and doesnt shoot out due to the force exerted by the spring when clicking. If all fails, use hot glue or epoxy to glue it on. (Last resort :|) Btw, try not to change your insert once you done step 8. It will be a pain in the ass to redo this.

    9. Take another clicker part 2, and cut off the ridges, and cut off abit of the thicker part, such that it fits nicely into a signo tip. Wrap some double sided tape (or anything to thicken it) and screw it tightly into the signo tip.
    (blue clicker for reference)

    10. Cut off about 0.3cm of the Zebra Jimne Gel Grip, and slip it around the broader part of the signo tip. Push the signo tip with the grip around it into the Zebra Jimne Cap, until you cant push it in further. You can use a g2 barrel to help you push it in.

    11. Wrap an insert for the cap 3.4cm by 3 cm, and slide it into the cap. Use tape to secure the insert, but please do not spam, or you will "thicken" the cap, and create friction between the insert and the g2 clicker barrel.

    12.Slide funky grip onto the front of the pen, and you are done!

    It should be balanced, if the cap part is too heavy then cut off abit of the clip, if not, just leave it.

    Credits to ayatori for coming up with the kewlkat grip cutting idea.
    Me, for thinking up this mod.
    iNoob, for creating the HGG Jell Mod ( we both thought of it independently, and each have our own variations)

    too many pens. if i had the stuff to make an ayatori i could probably make it retract w/ less pens and stuff. anyways nice attempt? my thread sucked too.

    It doesnt get stuck biggrin.gif. If you want, I can make a vid of it clicking 100 times in a row, but i havent decided on the color schemes yet, so it will look ugly.

    @Aries: I can do that too, but i wanted to be original, + the clicking is teh pwnz.

    Seems like a good mod but i dont think it will stand up against the "drop test" (aka durability test). Of course i could be totally wrong and this thing could be as tough as bricks :>

    If you mean works well for writing, i'd say ya... Its basically uses a g2 mechanism, which is really reliable and nice to click lol. For spinning, its around 17g, around the weight of a kt, and the tips are at the ends, so there is good momentum.

    Kay, i dont know if its cuz my scale is wrong cuz it probably is, but when i weighed my Bonkura KT, it sayed .6g... maybe the metrics were off, idk...

    Wow that's really off lol. During my physics lab class, i measured the pen's weight with the electronic scale balance, and it was about 17g-18g, around the same as a KT, and i took the weight of a KT in the wiki to be correct.

    Ok, i definately have to get a new scale...or maybe it was set incorrectly or on a different unit...idk...

    this tutorial, unlike the ones for most retractable mods, is understandable.

    can the pens easily be found in the US or on penwish?

    Well, I suppose Signos, G2s , Dr. Grip COG and HGGs can be found in the US. As for Zebra Jimne Gel, Pilot Nextage, I'm not too sure about the availbility of those. Fret not, I'm releasing a tut on how to make another version of this mod using signo tips, and more commonly available parts soon enough. happy.gif

    This mod is a pain in the ass to make though, as the G2 Barrel clicker portion is the hardest part. You cant file it too thin, or it cracks really easily, and yet you need to file it down such that an insert can easily slide over it in the Zebra Jimne Cap sad.gif In retrospect, I should not have released this tut as this is one major flaw.

    So.. where's your new tut with the signo tips?

    Can i use other inktubes besides the Laknock ones? I'm thinking of something wth gel ink.

    We file down the back part of the HGG barrel which is slightly smaller than the rest of the barrel right? th part just behind the "Pentel".

    Where'd you get the white grip? Is it a Signo Broad? The one at the front behind the Dr Grip grip where you said should be the jimnie gel grip.

    Can we use French/Jap Dr grip grip for the front or is it specifically Dr grip COG?

    Sorry but I don't understand this part. Your tut was good. So.. after reading this, are there any changes we have to make to make sure that whatever you said here doesn't happen?

    Great tut.

    Didn't bother making another tut, no time.

    You can try, ballpoint refills would work best imo, I havent tried gel refills though.

    Yes you file that area.

    Its a White Signo Broad.

    If you have the other Dr. Grips, you can see why the grips would not work. I personally prefer Dr. Grip Cogs over conventional Signo Knock-type grips as their grip is transparent, major + for aesthetics. But they are loose though.

    You have to file the G2 Barrel such that is it thin enough for the cap to slide over it with the insert in it repeatedly without screwing up the insert, but not till it cracks. Its a trial and error process, and very time consuming.

    Filing such a small thing is a nuisance. try using a nail clipper. Tried and worked.
