This is the official thread to discuss PEN'Z GEAR, made by TOMY.
Official Site: http://www.takaratomy.co.jp/products/penzgear/
Use the other thread to talk about SpinZ.
Posts that deal with both pens at the same time can go in either thread. -

pen'z gear mod
i don't think they'll take the fun out of ps'ing -
Date: Tue, Mar 11 2008 12:48:03
Well I wouldn't mind having a couple for collection purposes, but it definitely is a lot more fun creating your own mods, cause then you get more of a sense of satisfaction. Still, nothing wrong with pre-made mods though, they usually do turn out much better than the mods I create for the first time.
-

lazy people may buy this pen.
i'm still modding my own pens.
i want to be proud of MY work, of my selfmade pen (not an own mod! but for example a MX made by me). -

I received some Pen'z Gear from Japan, and someone asked me how it was, so here's a short review on it. I've had them for a week or two, and been trying them out pretty much. Enough to get an opinion about them. Pen'z Gear are produced by Takara Tomy and sold in Japan, for about 500Â¥. They've been out since February 2008.
Name of the Pen: Pen'z Gear

Manufacturer: Takara Tomy (http://www.takaratomy.co.jp/products/penzgear/)
-Dimensions-
Length (capped): 19.2 cm
Length (writing): 16.3 cm
Width: 1 cm
Weight: n/a
-Properties-
Texture/Material: plastic body, rubber outer caps, metal rings, neither slippy nor grippy body
Grip: no
Rectractable: no
-Availability-
Location acquired: Tokyo, Japan
Price: 525Â¥
Sold in: Packs of 1, and packs of 2 + DVD
The package is just for the pen itself, including a short instructions manual.
I can't really tell what it says, but seems decent enough. The booklet teaches ThumbAround and Sonic. There is also a Pen'z Gear package available that comes with a DVD, which probably contains better trick tutorials.
The Pen'z Gear consists of
- A barrel with print, which has ink so it can write. The ink only goes to one side though, the other looks the same but doesn't have any tip.
- Two caps that cover the tips.
- 4 metal rings on each side, for weight.
- Rubber caps that hold the metal rings, and allow for Infinitys'
Quality of the pen:
I've been spinning (and dropping) it quite a lot, both indoors and outdoors. It's been worn more than I had thought though, the print has started to fade and the rubber caps look pretty worn already (at least when looking at the pen).
Worn side of the barrel
Worn print
Worn rubber-cap
I wouldn't say the quality of the pen is good in that way, I mean you could at least expect the print to be adjusted for penspinners. The rubber-caps started to look kind of worn after just a drop or two outdoors, but that was more expected. One cap (of the ink-covering caps) fits good and sturdy, while the other is kind of loose. This is a great annoyance, since it rattles when spun. I've only opened and tested one of the pens I have though, so this might be different for others. I don't doubt that the pen itself will live long though, even if it well get really worn. There's probably no chance of breaking it by dropping or so.
Spinnability:
Even though it might not be the best pen there is for spinning, it's fun to spin. The way you get it, it's kind of too center balanced. The weight itself is in my opinion good, but I would like to get it out to the sides more. By removing the ink and adding a ring or two to the sides would probably solve this, but I haven't tried it out yet. The barrel gives a good feel, it's not slippery at all in the way that makes other pens bad. It's awesome for pass-charges, all kinds of Sonics and Shadows, but when it comes to Arounds (and specifically TA..) it's kind of hard to perform good due to the weight distribution. -

Man, I haven't been around the community for years. I came back after watching someone showed me the penz gear promo video. Must say I thought the commerical was whack, but it's nice to know they're some pens made offically for pen spinning. I might try to get my hands on some for collection sake. There doesn't seem to be a review I can find on them.

U just tried my friend's PenZ Gear, and I have to say it's quite nice.... I think I should get one =P
but anyway, I don't know if it's just me, but when you have all 4 rings on each side, if feels a bit center heavy... I mean, it feels like the weight is more in the middle of the pen then in the caps..
is it just me? -
Date: Mon, Jun 23 2008 22:15:58
no, everyopne kinda gets that...
its because the weight isnt very far from the middle... its not on the very tip or anything...
its still fun to spin with i think -

Hello, all!
Today I recieved my PG-07 from PenWish (BIG thanks to them! ). So im here to make little review.
At this review will be some pictures + my opinion about this pen + tech. parameters.
My recieved package:
Pen in it's pack:
The pen:
And now here you can see the pen with it's parts:
About the pen:
Pen is high quality, personaly I didn't find any glitches or something. Each side it has rubber material ends - wich are very GREAT for two things: 1. When you drop it makes much smaller sound, 2. Are good for infinity stuff, helps control it trought your fingers without droping it but DOESN't slow down your speed.
Then each side has 4 metal rings. You can take off one or few or all to find your weight.
You can take off bouth caps but only one is writable side.
+ You can't see it in pictures but body contains small ''thingys'' that doesn't allow to pen roll of the table but they are very small and dont affect spinning.
I think its perfect for my school - you can write and you can spin with same pen + when you drop very small noise.
Ow and it had with it small guide how to make TA and sonic -
Date: Wed, Aug 13 2008 19:45:36
Theres already a Penz Gear review thread.
Edit: found the link. Here. -
Date: Wed, Aug 13 2008 20:07:23
F off im free to tell my opinion about this pen so you can just
(no offence) -
Date: Wed, Aug 13 2008 20:20:05
Yo dude chill out. I'm not saying that you're not allowed to state your opinion, I'm saying that you should have done it in the other thread.
-
Date: Wed, Aug 13 2008 22:46:32
this thread is fine, cuz we have individual threads for each spinz model too.
-
Date: Thu, Aug 14 2008 00:41:25
Btw about the design of it's body - body has only black paint - the grey gosts are color of body.
And i noticed two problems with pen:
First is color of the pen - if you use it alot or just scratch it with your nail hardly - it loses its black color - but at this pen it isn't problem for me - becouse body basicly has grey color (a bit transp.) and black & grey isn't bad for me. So i can even make black insert for this model.
Second problem is about the metal rings that gives weight. When you spin it they make a bit noise. So I have tested that all 4 rings at bouth sides for me are just perfect and i wont change their count - i just used super glue (very cearfuly so the super glue is invisable).
So a bit of crafting and upgrading I made for my self perfest pen. -
Date: Thu, Aug 14 2008 00:41:52QUOTE (Zombo @ Aug 14 2008, 12:46 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>this thread is fine, cuz we have individual threads for each spinz model too.
Yes, but there are different SpinZ (axis, ronin..). PenZ Gear are exactly the same (except the outsert and the color of the caps..).
If we do a new thread for each color of pen... It will be really messy here.. -
Date: Thu, Aug 14 2008 02:36:07
This is exactly why I thought this thread was unnecessary.
-
Date: Thu, Aug 14 2008 04:35:15
if its called PG-07, it must mean there are other models right?
-
Date: Thu, Aug 14 2008 04:44:14QUOTE (Zombo @ Aug 14 2008, 12:35 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>if its called PG-07, it must mean there are other models right?
well, it's called that...cause of it's outsert--the other models just have different outserts
all the penzgears all spin the same, they just look a bit different cause of the different outserts whereas each spinz models spin much differently than the next
-
Date: Thu, Aug 14 2008 04:49:38
i think the number is just the style/color scheme
other than that they are identical -

The website reveals some new products of Pen'z Gear.
"Born from Fire" is the first mechanical pencil type Pen'z Gear with their design in three color, red, blue nad purple. And there are another two new DVDs including some trick tutorials. The orange one includes Thumspin 1.5, "Semi Reverse", "Drummer", Scissor Spin, Cardioid, Double Thumbaournd and a TA/TS combo. On the other hand, the blue one includes Charge, Charge Reverse, Shadow, Sonic Clip, Sonic Rise and/or Fall, Double Charge, some Shadow variations, and a Sonic combo. Each DVD only comes with two Pen'z Gear: a mecanical pencil type one and a pen type one.
(As for "Semi Reverse", you can watch videos on aysh's website: http://www.penspinning.info/normal/trick/i...ml#FakedReverse. FakedReverse is Thumbspin Reverse in Japanese naming system. The 155kB video includes a trick 1.0 rotation of Semi Reverse; Semi Reverse is a 0.5 rotation trick. And, "Drummer" equals to last half of Fingerpass Normal > Neo-Sonic 12-T1, whose video is available on aysh's website as well.)
"Pen'z Gear Aid" is produced in collaboration with some international designers. It also has a project that the 10% of the price tax excluded of each Pen'z Gear Aid pen sold will be donated to UNICEF. For example, the 10% of the price of a pen corresponds to two pencils and two notebooks, according to the website. -

I saw pen'z gear at my local Wal-mart..they had different pens
They had pens like the "DON'T THINK SPIN" pens for a whooping $10 a piece
Then they had a mod kit and in it was a pen..looked like this pen and had like 2 other sets you could change the color with and a CD that taught you the basics. It listed thumbaround, sonic, charge, infinity, and some others on the inside cover when you opened the flap to see the pen..it was $20
I also think they had this little ring thing in which you attached the pen to and stuck it on your finger and it could allow you to spin the pen..i was like "fakers "
But yeah i thought of buying 1 of each..the $10 and $20 one..i would take the $20 one and give my brother the $10 one..although i think i won't cause i can buy the same pen from penwish for less then half the price..
But yeah i was kinda shocked to see it..i laughed so hard at first..then i saw the pen and i was impressed..but i may as well end up buying it from penwish
Anyone else see them around in USA? -

i got mine off ebay a couple months ago, its ok to spin with but the center of gravity holds the weight so i hate that part of it, also the design in the middle has completely rubbed off already, but for 8 bucks, what the hell, maybe ill try and mod it up
-
Date: Sat, Jan 10 2009 10:30:38
before even thinking of buying this pen please read this.
i know cuz i have one
the good thing is you can adjust the weight as desired
plus the color of the ink depends upon the design and color of the pen(which is a good thing because you can write with the pen)
there's only one problem with this pen
the design might be good but sooner or later youll find out that it is slowly getting erased
until theres no design left on your pen
there are 2 varieties when buying this pen
you can choose the package with only one pen(which is cheaper)
you can also buy the other package which has two pens with different designs the package also contains
a CD with some tutorials.
the first package costs for about 500Yen
the second package costs about 1300yen(Not sure but this price is close )
SO...
Think about it -
Date: Sun, Feb 8 2009 02:03:49
Does anyone know how to change the ink of a penz gear?
I just got a devlish spin light green and I love it, but I want to be able to write with it at school. (school papers only allow black/blue ink usually)
I saw a picture a few pages back with the entire pen taken apart, and the inktube was visible.
I was just wondering if the ink can be replaced with a different color to make it more practical.
And yea, I already tried pliers; didnt work. :\ I don't want to go too crazy in case I might damage the front part and the caps wont stay on anymore. That would be bad. XD -

Uhh.. the part where the pen is, the entire bit just screws out. it might be a bit hard, just use the little ridge things to help twist. -

Hmm I see the ridges and i'm using them to twist; I've been twisting for a while, and it hasnt shown any progress.
should I use pliers? -

you shouldnt have to... try useing something to grip that entire end piece (grip or towel) and twist it... it might be a bit hard but it should come out. -

Pen'Z Gear review by Dori. ^^

nice man nice.... about 3 minutes too long for me...but im sure that ppl can def. learn a few things from it.
"Center Heavy", is concerning the fact that most of the weight in penz gear is in the center of middle of the pen (ie: body)
with a penspinning pen, you want as much as the weight as possible to the very ends of the pen = more momentum.
This is what makes it a tad more weird to spin... because the metal weights arent at the very end of the pen... and from where the metal weights are.. the pen would only be like 14 cm long... (if not shorter) and it gives the sense of that kind of momentum.
Overall, still good, ive always loved these pens!! the designs are the best, Now go get a "Don't Think, Spin!" Yellow... theyre the most awesome!! -

Yea! I've always wanted that design (because it looks so catchy ), but my trader ran out of them...
edit: Adding 'center heavy' in annotations now -

great review!!! I have a question. Can u modify it to write on both sides, or is the other side impossible to mod? Also, the one you were spinning, how many rings were on it?

Only one side of them has a hole for the inktube to come out from. However, I'm sure if you drill a hole in the other side and use short inktubes it could work.

Uhhmmm.. its not that bad.
the only complaint is that it is slightly center heavy.
Ive seen a couple of japanese spinners doing some amazing things spinning with penz gear.
its not as bad as you say....just because you only spin momentum based pens.
