Two things I think not to do in this podcast...

Make sure people have prepared for the podcast...

I felt that everyone sounded very bored on that podcast. Can we show some enthusiasm please? Pen spinning is suppose to be a major hobby of yours (the people on the podcast). Show you love it!

  3. Sfsr
    Date: Mon, Mar 17 2008 18:59:15

It was kind of hard to be as prepared as we wanted since we had to have watched all the videos of the second round for the latest podcast, and they had just been released :/

Anyways, I'm up for this again but I don't know if it's a good idea to have the same host 3 shows in a row.

David Weis, is it really a good idea to do an interview in this podcast? I think we should keep it to the WC really, then do one with David later. Half an hour / podcast is a good length imo, we really should try to keep it at that and have them more often instead.

  4. Zombo
    Date: Mon, Mar 17 2008 20:55:49

I think ppl have heard enough of the WC :/

results will be announced but thats all I guess... there will be only 3 battles for the finals, thats not a lot of content.

also I believe romain may be interested in hosting IF weis is interviewed.

  5. Sfsr
    Date: Wed, Mar 19 2008 08:15:17

But revealing the results, talking about the prizes and getting some reactions from teammembers might already take 30 minutes.

  6. Zombo
    Date: Sun, Mar 23 2008 14:51:22

I've just talked to David Weis and Romain, they both accept.

For this podcast I think 2 hosts will be needed, so you can be the other one, Sfsr.

  7. Sfsr
    Date: Tue, Mar 25 2008 17:21:42

    Sure.

    Does David use MSN?

I agree with SFSR. Covering and wrapping up all of the WC will take a lot of time, also you guys could cover the Japan tournament as well and talk about PS getting national coverage and Spinz being in Wallmart!

I'm sure Romain wouldn't mind waiting and I think if we asked Kam, he would be glad to be a host too. I think having Kam's perspective would make the interview more interesting.

Kam and/or Sfsr and I could prepare questions and we could put together a really solid podcast. In fact if Kam is hosting it will be a challenge for us to keep it under 30 minutes.

Have you guys ever considered using Skype?

Let me know if you want me to set up MSN.

    Date: Tue, Apr 22 2008 17:56:07

well... frankly we already did one complete podcast on the World Cup and I think that was too much already... the results just need to be announced that's all there is to it.

  10. DasIstJaStuhl
    Date: Tue, Apr 22 2008 20:42:32

    hm. yeah, maybe 50/50?
first talking about other stuff about 15/20 minutes.
then the last 15/20 minutes may be the world cup. we dont really have to make it world cup only because there arent that much videos to talk about, but i think just revealing the results would be a bit too short.
firstly we could talk about the videos and the world cup in general and then in the end the results are going to be revealed. that would also have the effect, that everybody must listen to the podcast till the end =))

  11. Sfsr
    Date: Tue, Apr 22 2008 21:11:34

I don't think we should talk about specific videos, just more about how everything went in general etc, prizes, plans for coming tourneys. Then reveal the results. I think that can take up to 30 mins though.

  12. Eso
    Date: Wed, Apr 23 2008 14:00:45

Sfsr, I don't think all of that will go up to 30 minutes. Just a brief mentioning and take questions later. Also, do you even know what plans there are for upcoming tourneys?

  13. Sfsr
    Date: Mon, May 5 2008 06:56:55

Aaah we need to get this decided.

So we'll have both results from the wc and all and in interview with David? In what order? If we had the interview first it feels as if we're starting something new before finishing the previous thing, but if we did it the other way around we'd have the climax in the middle of the podcast.

    :/

These two things are so separate.

  14. Zombo
    Date: Mon, May 5 2008 14:45:49

I must contact weis and romain firsdt to set a date

  15. Zombo
    Date: Wed, May 7 2008 22:50:50

how about we set the podcast to May 31st?

  16. Zombo
    Date: Thu, May 8 2008 12:38:27

Romain and David accept May 31.

Time? Let's do it 2PM EST, as usual.

    thats 11AM PST, 8PM Europe

  17. Sfsr
    Date: Thu, May 8 2008 13:10:39

So who will be hosting? Will we also be inviting Kam or just me and Romain with David? I could cover most of the WC shizzle, and let Romain handle most of the interview? I want to ask some questions too though :D

Woud Skype give us better sound qual? Is it possible to record as easily? Etc.

  18. Zombo
    Date: Thu, May 8 2008 13:21:40

    you, romain, david

dunno about skype, we have ventrilo so... problem with it is there's limit to number ofp pl

btw u need to talk to romain

  19. Kam
    Date: Fri, May 9 2008 00:06:31

Just saw this...do you guys want me to co-host? I could help with the interview with David since we're from the same...uh....generation of PS?

    Just let me know,
    Kam

sure, if that's fine with Sfsr.

  21. Sfsr
    Date: Sun, May 11 2008 18:15:28

    Of course.

Now onto what we need to talk about.

    - Sfsr introduces the podcast, the hosts and the guest, since I've been hosting before (?)

What do we need to say about the WC?
    - CrAsH reveals the results
    - Reactions from me (Sfsr), since I'm in one of the teams. Shall we try to get someone from the JEB team into the podcast? I doubt it's possible, it'll be 3 AM in Tokyo at the time of the podcast.
    - Prizes
    - ?

    The Interview with David:
    - Questions? Book of Cool, David's thumb, how it's going with his planned videos, etc.

I'd like Kam to write down some stuff, since both of you have been spinning since the BIRTH OF TIME. Romain will handle most of this, right?

  22. Zombo
    Date: Sun, May 11 2008 19:15:31

I'd like the interview before the WC please.

  23. Kam
    Date: Fri, May 16 2008 18:32:05

David sent me an outline for the interview. I'll clean it up and post it here this weekend?

Right now it seems it would go over 30 min, but i'll put the whole outline and we can decide what are the most interesting points to cover.

  24. Zombo
    Date: Fri, May 16 2008 18:52:46

    ok sounds good,
please make sure to notify the other hosts as well

  25. Kam
    Date: Wed, May 21 2008 20:50:59

My apologies, I didn't get a chance to work on it this weekend >_<

It turned out it was my sister's birthday (hehe...completely forgot) so things got busy. I'll post the initial outline David sent me in hopes you guys can help me as well.

    Kam

    Spoiler:
1990 - started college began to spin a little more so toward 1992 after I changed Universities from U of Toledo, OH to Florida Atlantic U.
1996 - searched internet for ps sites, found Hideoko Kondeki's site with several videos, and found a couple of other sites with only pictures.
emailed back and forth with Hideoko, he was a middle school science teacher. As I talked to him about combining tricks and continuous spinning he didn't seem to grasp what I was talking about.

1997 ? started pencilspinning site on free tripod server with the original videos including TS1.5 cont., half-tap cont. and Rev->Bak . later moved the site to pencilspinning.com

Used the terms combos, freestyle, continuous to describe categories.

Devised a ps short hand that has since been standardized.

(Talk about naming conventions changing, make reference to Rev->Bak still being known as such but not fitting the current convention. ) ( you talked to me about the TS not being named simply Forward or Reverse, since all tricks can use this descriptor. Hideoko and the Japanese also used did this using the names Normal and Reverse...)

1999? Let pencilspinning.com expire and the site was down for several months, I hadn't even saved the videos. Kam contacted me and encouraged me to put the site back up, he had saved off the site. I talked to Kam about the tricks I was working on, continuous bak1.5 and other stuff mostly backaround variations.

    2001? added backaround1.5 continuous
2002 or 2003 ? added levitator, neobak combos, scissor spin combos, baktap, bakflip

2003 or early 2004? Actually started working on non-original tricks for the first time, like sonic rise, TS harmonic put new videos out under pencilninja site, including combo with first midaround.
I've never been very interested in learning tricks that already exist.

around this time I remember being very active on UPSB with KAM, NHK-9, (and who else???)
We posted about new tricks we were working on or conceptualizing

interesting story about Kam and I and ??? all working on creating the same trick which we are talking about on the board which ??? later releases as the Shadow.

May 2004, Kam passed me the opportunity to do a ps part in TheBookOfCool (video trailer shows that my sonics don't suck anymore.) I learn them high(normal) and low as well, to transition from low backarounds easier.)

2005- september 2007 I'm not paying attention to PS community as much. Kam calls and tells me about all of the ps activity and the videos on youtube and about Bonkura who had just passed. He informs me that UPSB is back online.
He asks if I'm working on anything I mention consecutive midbaks and handarounds, he informs me that others are also doing these tricks and much more and very smooth and fast.

I watch videos on youtube, Bonkura, et al. create a profile on UPSB, start to polish up some of my more original tricks and combos that I didn't see on youtube planing to release a set of new videos. Kam is in Texas with NHK-9. I plan to drive up to Dallas to see them, but I end up falling off my bike and breaking my thumb the day before.

Still spin, what I'm working on, what I can't do so well anymore, what I never got on video.

(hopefully I'll release a video clip or two before the podcast (if I have time) and a pic of my thumb.)

    what else?
I guess I could give a quick life story sort of like you did in your podcast, describe my unique life path and my other interests and where they have taken me, where I have lived, etc.

    what else?

    Date: Wed, May 21 2008 20:55:28

thats an outline? sounds more like a timeline of his PS career.

  27. Sfsr
    Date: Thu, May 22 2008 20:54:35

It would be hard to cover stuff like that in the podcast, more suited for the History dept :D

But, we should ask ourselves what the people listening want to know. About David's thumb I bet. About what he's been up to. About the book of cool. About the tricks he "invented".

Not all people know who he is, we could start with a short background, covering what tricks he was involved in creating, and the pencilninja site. Then move on to how he's busy with PS now.

  28. Kam
    Date: Fri, May 23 2008 22:37:05

Yeah...I was planning on pick the most interesting stuff from that, and maybe add other topics to it, but haven't found time...that's why I posted the entire thing here.

You guys are welcome to suggest what we should use though.

One thing I think it would be interesting to talk about is how BMX has influenced his style of spinning (not referring to his BMX accident). I remember David telling me that some of the BMX moves influenced the BackAround? I think that is pretty interesting.

  29. Zombo
    Date: Tue, May 27 2008 15:15:04

I'd like to do a test prior to the podcast. You guys don't have to be in all present at the same time, but we just need to make a quick check to make sure Ventrilo is working.

Also on the day of the podcast, please be present 1 hour prior to the podcast if possible.

  30. Sfsr
    Date: Tue, May 27 2008 15:21:37

I probably won't be able to make it until 30 minutes before. I have ventrilo for mac, I don't think that should cause any problems though?

  31. Zombo
    Date: Tue, May 27 2008 15:23:04

if its the same thing as last time, it will work

  32. Zombo
    Date: Thu, May 29 2008 11:14:45

romain says he can't participate anymore, damn!

  33. Kam
    Date: Thu, May 29 2008 20:36:38

So it's gonna be David Weis, Crash, sfsr and myself on the podcast?

I sent David an email yesterday to remind him, but haven't heard a reply yet. I hope he didn't forget tongue.gif

  34. Zombo
    Date: Thu, May 29 2008 22:01:06

crash is technically not a host.

furthermore a japanese representative such as ayatori might join the podcast to react to the results.

  35. Sfsr
    Date: Fri, May 30 2008 06:59:35

    Argh.

Kam, could you help me write down questions and make a plan for the interview? I'm leaving for school now but I'll try to get started with it as fast as I get home.

  36. Kam
    Date: Fri, May 30 2008 08:09:00

I'm thinking something like this (sry, it's very rough)

Overview: "Our gues is David Weis, blah blah blah, inventor of BackAround...blah blah blah" tongue.gif

Started: "So David, how did you start pen spinning?"

Pencil: "Do you only use pencils for spinning? If so, why?"

Sonics: "I remember you were very specialized in BackAround and Continuous tricks? When did you start learning more common tricks such as the Sonic? How was that experience?"

Current PS: "what is your view on today's PS? For example, what do you feel about the popularity of pen mods, and the competitive nature of PS (like battles and tournaments)? Are there any pen spinners in the recent years that have impressed you?"

Thumb: "I'm sure many of us already know what happened to your Thumb, but can you give us a quick recap?" after recap "How has this affected your PS?"

    ------------
Other topics (don't think we'll have time):

Book Of Cool (can try to integrate as part of the answer to Sonics?)

    Anyways...comments are welcome

  37. Sfsr
    Date: Fri, May 30 2008 09:21:55

    Sounds good.

    I'll open the podcast, right?

Shall I introduce both you and David from the start, or shall we move directly to the WC Results, then continue to the interview, at what point you guys come in? Do you also want to talk about the WC, or just the interview, Kam? What you wrote down is after everything about the WC has been dealt with, so then it would probably be better if you made that overview, then we switch between questions asked to David.

  38. Kam
    Date: Fri, May 30 2008 16:41:55

I thought we were aiming to get the interview before the WC results

I'd like the interview before the WC please.

I'd say we just introduce David. I'm more well known, as for this podcast, it's not really important that people know me anyways.

I would rather avoid commenting much on the World Cup results since I haven't been following it as closely as you guys.

    Kam

  39. Sfsr
    Date: Fri, May 30 2008 18:04:22

Oh yeah I keep forgetting that, haha. Okay, do you want to welcome people or shall I do that? I could say like "Welcome to the podcast, today we will start with an interview and then finish off the world cup by releasing the final results" etc, then you say "Out guest today is David Weis" -> background history, etc.

    Does that sound good?

Once we're all done with David, which should be within 20-30 minutes, I ask CrAsH to reveal the results.

    Any news about Ayatori, Zombo?

edit: wait.. we won't release the results on the podcast? DDD:

  40. Kam
    Date: Fri, May 30 2008 20:44:37

Well, I also don't want to be anonymous...lol.

You can say something like "Welcome to the podcast. I'm sfsr and I'll be your host today. We also have kam with us ..." etc... Otherwise I think people will be like "who are these guys?" lol

    But yeah...the rest sounds fine.

@Zombo (or someone who has his system setup properly), can you PM David a link to what he has to download, and also the info for connecting to the UPSB radio server?

I talked to him today and we'll be doing a practice run tonight (around 8PM Pacific time/GMT-8).

    Kam

  41. Sfsr
    Date: Fri, May 30 2008 20:53:22

Yeah of course, lol. People usually get confused about who is who, so we'll need to make that very clear. I also need to do a test run, since I'm on my macbook now so I'm not sure how it'll work with the rest. Otherwise I can just use my old PC though.

    I won't be online at 8PM GMT -8 though :P
