Hi I just started and I know it's called pen spinning but is it ok if you use a pencil or do you have to just stick to pens??? If so what kind is best, round or flat and what number lead (number 2, number 1, etc.) thanks!

    thanks!

Use whatever you want/feels good. Round bodies are normally easier to use.

Check out the wiki for descriptions of different pen/pencil mods.

Using a pencil is fine for learning the fundamentals. To make things easier to learn, buy those eraser attachments that you can buy for regular pencils and stick 1 on each side of the pencil for added weight/momentum.

you can spin everything you like
but for beginner, heavy and symetric pen/pencil is the best

If you are going to spin with a pencil it might be better if you use a round pencil instead of one like a dixon executive.

Yes, a pencil is just fine. If you can find a denim pencil, it might work better with the added weight.

I would strongly recommend against spinning pencils, even mechanical models. They can be spun, but are far too light to be spun properly; spinning them can result in some pretty bad habits. Sure, you can get pencil weights, but using these weights will result in a pencil having a discontinuous weight distribution--a spinner's worst nightmare.

The best pen you can go with is one of moderate mass with an even profile and weight distribution. I prefer the Faber-Castell Ambition model. In addition to being very well balanced, it's also easily disassembled. This allows for the addition of dynamic counter-balancing agents. The key here is "dynamic". Materials such as sand or (in a pinch) sea salt can be poured into the barrel to help counterbalance the pen during spinning and greatly increase response and control. Try doing that with a pencil!

If you're really stuck on the idea of spinning a pencil, you should check out a pen/pencil combination such as this one. A pen/pencil combo has all the benefits of an easily disassembled, well-balanced pen along with the error-correction capabilities of a pencil.

    Hope this helps.

@HELLicopta: what are these bad habits that you speak of?

Yeah when I didn't know about "pen" spinning I just knew the fundamentals and called it "pencil spinning" because I didn't know what it was. I learned Sonic, tw sonic, infinity, thumbaround, reverse thumbaround, and some other stuff with a pencil until I stumbled across this little community of these weird and fantastic "pen spinners".

@Tratto_Pen: that's only if you are actually manipulating a Balisong, not something like a steak knife. wink.gif

@ HELLicopta u've never seen David Weis have u?

If u look at the wooden side of a pencil u'll see two patterns.
    1) two pieces of wood compressed or 2) wood that looks like particle board or sandpaper.
The two pieces of wood is usually heavier than the particle board pencil.
Anyways thats what i learned from the book of cool

I think the real point we are trying to make is that you can spin with whatevefr you want. I rarely spin with pencils because I'm just not really good at it. Some people are good with pencils some people are good with pens.

you can mod pencils too in some cases

in my case, putting on an RSVP is modding the pencil

i also once used a pencil to make a grip aviare

You absolutely can spin with a pencil, but it will be harder and less smooth.

Spin with a pencil can give you a style, like davis weis

i think you can just use anything you wish really

for me, pencils are too light, they feel hollow, well, its up to you

    it IS possible
