News & Announcements / Reducing Shoutbox Bandwidth

In an effort to reduce bandwidth consumption (VERY HIGH), I've disabled auto-refresh (technically, it only refreshes every hour). This is because when people idle with the site open, it's still going to refresh which waste ressources.

So if you want to refresh, click refresh, refresh your browser, or shout something.

The flood delay has been increased to 20 secs to reduce spamming.

You can use the shoutbox like you want, but I recommend you go into the chatroom if you really want to talk off-topic stuff.

    Thank you for your comprehension.

hmm, is this bandwidth thing really a problem? otherwise, i disagree with this ...

one, i'd think you guys would be excited about this, and possibly it would facilitate more chat, which zombo always wanted on UCPSB, but never really got (aside from the radio). And two, i've seen it used as a chat room on many other sites, so maybe this is still a possiblility despite the said bandwidth problem...

because honestly i would chat in this because its just more convienient, you dont have to click a whole other link or download an IRC client or anything, and also it allows you to chat and browse UPSB at the same time in the same window....

just something to think about, i was very excited when i saw it, because i knew it would increase chat ... but now i dunno

We just checked the bandwidth issue and WITHOUT AUTO-REFRESH, we reduced the overall bandwidth consumption of the WHOLE FORUM by 75%.

We'll be fine smile.gif Use the shoutbox as you want. (Although it's always recommended to go to the chatroom smile.gif)
