Regular Pen Discussion / Pentech SpinZ - Axis

Review

Full name of the Pen reviewed: Spinz Axis

    Manufacturer: Pentech

Dimensions: (All these dimensions are using all the weighted rubber rings, with less rings used the weight and length of pen would be smaller)
    -Length (capped): 18.2cm
    -Length (writing): 16.1cm
    -Width (body): ~1cm
    -Width (cap): 1.4cm
    -Weight: 17g

    Properties:
-Texture/Material: Barrel is a shrink-wrapped colors plastic outsert on a hard plastic body
-Grip: yes, grip rings at end of cap (held on securely with a screw) and grippy cap outer covering
    -Rectractable: no

    Availability:
-Location acquired: Amazon.com (can be found in Walmarts, Targets, and probably more office supply stores soon)
    -Price: around $20.00
-Sold in: individually with a SpinZ Wristband, trick instruction booklet, extra cap screws if you want to use less weighted grip rings, extra body, hex tool for removing/adding screw on cap

    -Box

-Comparison (Dr. KT, SpinZ Axis, Comssa)

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

    Comments:
-The plastic outsert on the barrel is a little bit annoying. I think it will hold through intense spinning sessions, but falls on a rough surface may tear it in places.

-Here is what the body looks like without the plastic outsert. I prefer the feel this way. No seams or bumps at all.

-The only mods I have tried with it is body replacement. Dong-A Computer Sign Pen bodies work well with a little bit of tape to thicken it at the ends to hold the caps securely

-Another body replacement with a white M&M body (requires sanding of barrel at the non-writing end for the Axis cap to fit)

-The box showed that they will be releasing ModZ packages of extra parts to modify it even more. One thing that it included was a clear body (INSERTS!!!) and different grip rings/grippy cap covering textures and colors

-Overall I think its a nice buy for someon not willing to buy parts for a Dr. KT online or trade for parts, or for people who aren't good at modding at all tongue.gif.

What's it's spinnability (new word?) compared to the metal comssa and KT?

I used shrink wrap for lack of a better word. Its a tightly fitting plastic outsert with a vertical seam on it.

I prefer a Dr. KT to it lol.

It spins well. Nicely weighted on the ends. The caps are rather thick compared to the body though sad.gif

wow the yellow looks pretty good! just the caps are a bit thick, the outsert looks nice too, just the fact that you said it is uncomfortable to spin sucks

I still think that the mods that you make yourself are better than these. like the KT or an MX or w/e probably not a Bic but w/e.

the body has a big gap from the caps. it looks like if you try to do certain tricks, the caps would get in the way. You know what I

mean? on an MX the cap isn't a lot bigger than the body. i could imagine that you could only spin on the body of the pen and

not the caps like a KT. well i guess not all pens are uniform lol and i agree, i think they look a bit uncomfortable. BUT THATS JUST

    ME. lol

I agree that the outsert could be smoother, but it's easy to fix that. Just run a sharp blade like an X-acto knife (a pen knife) across lightly and it smooths everything out. I have not tried sanding it, but I would think that sending has a higher chance of scratching the plastic and giving an uneven feeling. It doesn't really get torn unless you're purposely grinding it against something. When you drop it on rough surface, most of the time the caps are the only thing getting hit.

The cap is a bit thick, but that has not bothered me. In fact, notice how compared to the KT (or even a MX), there's plenty more spinning surface, so the caps don't really bother me.

One thing I wish to have them offer, however, is a cap that has a tip. That way the pen looks more like a pen.

@ Kam - Yeah, a cap with a tip may make it more appealing to PSers. They could just make the hex bolt (that holds the grip rings on) with a pointed metal end. They could make the hole in the top big enough for the hex tool to fit though for tightening/loosening it.

@ Hira - Lets please keep this as a review thread for the SpinZ Axis. Not another argument about whether pre-existing mods are better or not (put those thoughts in the generic SpinZ thread)

I like the way the yellow one looks. I wish that the toys and treasures people would let you choose which one you want.

    Yes.
What they call the "poster with instruction sheet" has tricks on it.

It has instructions for Charge, Thumbaround, Fingerpass, Sonic, Sonic X2, Reverse Sonic, Indexaround, Thumbspin 1.5, Triangle Pass, and Infinity.

I'm interested to see how their site will look when its opened. Especially to see if they have tutorials and things like that. happy.gif

I got it on amazon (no color choice though sad.gif)

I'm going to weight it tomorrow when I get to Organic Chemistry Lab with a very accurate scale.

Organic Chemistry is the worst class ever. I think it is worth than all the engineering courses I took throughout college. memorizing mechs. is stupid and time consuming eeeek.

I TOTALLY agree with you. waste of time memorizing mechanisms that I will never need again (I'm a Biology major, and we have to take orgo 1 and 2.... >.<)

No. Especially since its made by Pentech, not Pentel.

They are like rubber washers that sit on a bolt and screws into the top of each cap for added length/weight.

EDIT: Added weight of fully assembled Axis in tope post (about 17grams)

    Oh Kam, i thought you don't like double-side pen/mod. huh.gif

The pen looks ok to me, but the thick cap does looks weird.
Will the pen be sold in Border bookstores or Toy'r'us? I can find a Border bookstore 30~45mins away from my college and a few toy'r's stores. I don't think they'll be sold in local stores at my place. I want to try one of these spinz.

I don't see what people are complaining about when it comes to spinnability, it's all just because you aren't used to it. I had been spinning pens that had similar weight distribution before trying out the Axis, and it didn't feel any bad at all. I mean, there are things that can be improved upon but all in all a good start for Spinz, in my opinion. Also, we are penspinners. If we don't like how a pen is to spin with, we modify it to suit or needs. Modify your Axis until it is exactly how you want it, then tell Pentech/JAKKS about how the weight should be instead, or how we should be given option to modify it, and we might just get that in coming series.

As for back-cap fit and outsert-seam, it differs from pen to pen. with the body and all I use now there's basically no seam you can feel, and the caps fit as tight as on any pen.

edit: oh yeah, I thought the trick tutorial poster sucked though haha. if I had to learn from that I'm not sure I would've succeeded.

lol, nice man! I feel like a lot of the cost of the pen is due to the cost of the packaging. Is this really worth 25-30 bucks? I admit i've never used the axis and probably wont due to the cost alone, and i'm older so i have money to spend. is an 11 year old gonna have 25 dollars to spend on a pen?

It'd be cool if it had metal tips. This aint no KT.

you think the bookstores like NBS is gonna sell stuff like these?

  27. Bakithi
    Date: Thu, Feb 26 2009 01:55:18

I would not recommend buying these. The bottom black ring on the caps breaks quickly on both caps, even if you don't write with 'em much. If you drop it on a hard-ish floor even once, its permanent damage. The pen's flashy, looks great, and is fun to spin, but its overall durability is bad. I'd recommend just modding a pen yourself, or buying a pre-made mod... Pentech is just using the whole SpinZ gimmick to make cash. :\
