Philosophy / Who has more control?

Do we have more control of the pen, or does the pen have more control over us?

At first one might think we have absolute power over the pen. However, we then try to spin it and drop it, we put the pen down, and immediatly get a desire to pick it back up, we try to quit pen spinning, but the pen calls us back. Whatever we try to do, the pen always seems to win.

I think the pen has more control over us, and we have no control over the pen, we are merely pawns under its control.

When I first started reading I thought you rather meant in the meaning of "which chooses what the pen does?", wich also is quite interesting since we cannot control the exact movements of the pen, the momentum of the pen does that. But if you ask who has the control, then I must say the pen has it, atleast for me.

I think we have more control over the pen.

The pen is some not living object. If we don't move it, it doesn't move. You might want to pick up the pen after you put it down, but hey, if you pick it up, it is what YOU want. The pen doesn't beg you. smile.gif.

So yeah, we own the pen, hahahah.gif.

An addiction to pen spinning could be seen superficially as the pen controlling you. Scientifically speaking, it's the self that controls yourself. There is a developed need for pen spinning from within the brain, so one is compelled to keep spinning even after letting go of the pen.

So, the brain has a grip on you. The pen is merely an outlet for the addiction.

    Agreed.

The pen can't control you since you're the one telling the pen what to do. It's like saying a calculator is smarter than a human... The question should be "Can you control yourself?" O_o

I don't think the pen itself controls us. But I think it creates a part of us that is controlled by the pen, if you know what I mean.

    i think we "manipulate" it
the pen can go in any direction,
our fingers are just the guide to the pen.
the pen is our tool, in which we use it in any form or direction we choose.
At first, when you drop your pen, its only in our nature that we persist on getting our results.
As you get better, you yourself the spinner, have mastered the ways of the pen.

The pen has no control over anything. Out conscience chooses for us to spin it. We drop it because of gravity controlling the pen.

The Pen is DEAD. Oh noes!

Cause we pull off parts of pens, and use those parts to make some... New pen?

    But anyways...

That's besides the point! We control the pen. If it annoys us by like constantly dropping or something, you can blackmail it!

i think theres 2 sides to the story.
when i see a pen i immediatly spin it - it is our sub-conciense reminding us of how much of a good feeling it was last time u did it

    Date: Sun, Oct 7 2007 04:19:30

I guess if your pen is your security blanket or you're conditioned to constantly spin it, your pen has more control over you (so to speak). For most spinners this would seem the case...

  30. Tialys
    Date: Sun, Oct 7 2007 17:36:37

You have control over the pen while the pen doesn't have any. When you drop it, it doesn't gain control over you, you just have less control over it. Same as when you can't resist the urge to spin; it's your control that you're lacking. If pen spinning were actually controlling your life, it'd be different. That's why computers, for example, are said to control society because the world is so reliant on them for everything. So much so that when systems crash, people have no idea what to do. A pen barely has a fraction of the same influence.

I think the pen controls us cuz we can do what we want with the pen but it is what makes us stay with it as an addiction. Wether living or non-living it has the power to gain the persons addiction

  34. Mightyboy
    Date: Sat, Aug 16 2008 02:18:21

I think we are inter-dependent on each other. Its like the logic of left and right hand.
Well, you see, you have already ur dominant hand, which you do MOST things with.
However, if you needed to draw a straight line, u needed your non-dominant hand to hold on to the ruler.

Thus its like hand and pen. We control the pen to spin, but the properties of the pens somehow or rather, controls the tricks being done.

  35. Hoang
    Date: Sat, Aug 16 2008 04:07:16

Well pen spinning is like pen manipulation and as in all manipulative arts we are in control.
The pen is not making us do the tricks we are making the it do them.
Unless you don't know how to do a specific move you can control the pen, not the other way around.

Wow people aren't being very philosophical about this question. It's not about how the pen is like an actual being or anything we obviously can tell that its not, I mean every time you drop it it doesn't shout in pain. I would almost say yes the pen does control us, I mean like there's always that one favorite that you spin all the time and you carry with you every where. Ugh now I'm getting lost in what I was going to say, maybe I'll be back later to update this laugh.gif .

One night I went to bed with my faux rsvp mx on my nightstand. I woke up and looked at it and was like why is the tip tilted so much? I tried to remove it and it would not come off. I removed the grip. The front part of the rsvp barrel was snapped, the ink tube was bent a little bit. How did I break part of an rsvp barrel overnight without touching it?

ITS TRUE!!! THE PENS ARE REALLY JUST WAITING FOR THE RIGHT TIME TO STRIKE!!! THEY WILL KILL US ALLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!1!1!!!11!ONE11ONEONE1

but really guys....we obviously control the movement of the pen and an imaginary higher being controls whether or not we get a promotion or whether or not we recover from a disease or whether or not our favorite football team wins....in essence, GOD CONTROLS THE PEN!.....wait....then why do innocent people die huh(1).gif

So when you dont spin your fingers try to find something to do?

Thats for me. When I put down my pen in class, I usually have the urge to spin it. I'll say to actually say no to spinning for a while gives you control.
