Pen Modifications / Electroplating Tips?
-
Date: Tue, Apr 22 2008 07:13:02
Does anybody know if people have tried electroplating tips? that way you can make em gold colored, copper colored, etc.
idk if this would be expensive or not (probably expensive) but i think it would be kinda hard to find a place that would do that.
the mythbusters did their own electroplating with homemade batteries on this one myth. so maybe you could do it on your own? idk..
can we talk and argue about this? im curious to see what people say about this. -

this seems like a fun idea.
I remember doin this in highschool like 6 years ago.
Putting a copper plating around Quarters.
can be done with household items also...
Maybe this weekend ill try copper plating my DR.Grip tips.
I have a few extra laying around -

Oh yes... this is a good idea.
In my country, gold plating something is cheap...
about $3 for a ring...
and i can found this on street market
yeah.... can't wait (Golden Dr. KT is coming) -

It is totally possible. did it last year in physics. It can be cheap if you ask your school's physics teacher.

Even better...try acid etching your Dr. Grip Tips.

haha now its getting into the more complicated and expensive side! idk how easy that would be though... cuz finding a place that does that and getting them to do it to tips? if you have a place, tell me!

i just gota get a 15 volt battery to dissolve some gold coins or copper coins in acid.
you can get this stuff in hardware stores and stuff. -

what kind of solution are you going to use to submerge the tips

i think there are better guides than this but here's an example http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-pictu...h-Acid-Etching/
Heres another one http://www.instructables.com/id/easily-etc...ages-in-copper/
Imagine, Dr. Grip tips with acid etched flames. I dunno. Be careful with the acid, it will eat your hands off. -

I've thought about electroplating dr.grip tips back when i saw pictures of the gold tip on ucpsb. The only problem is that I dont quite know what the dr.grip tip is made out of so i'm not really sure if you can electroplate it properly. I dont know much about electroplating, but i thought you had to know what metal it was made out of so that you could find the right solution to electroplate it with

some one posted Gold plated tips in the show off your pen thread.
seems to work.
but not sure if they used the same methods.
theres PLENTY of ways to gold plate metal material.
Theres even a way to polish it and brush 24K Gold bits on it and recoat it so it stays on.
but this is definately a interesting project.
ima try to test it on my HGG tips first... cuz i really dont wana mess up my Dr.grip Tips since they are about 7 bucks a pop. -

i have asked the craft man who can electroplate in my country, and he says that any metal is OK...
(i think i gotta ask him the chemical stuff that he use)
EDIT : Try this solution -> potassium aurocyanide -

Good call. -

the question is, how do you get potassium aurocyanide...

i could probably get some but honestly...i'd rather pay for professional work if im going to have to mess around with that kind of stuff. -

I think i'm gonna study basic electroplating and practicing with every kind of metal (especially pen tips).
And when i'm done, i will release the tutorial (safe method for electroplating). -
Date: Wed, Apr 23 2008 05:52:20
hope you all do realize that electroplating tips will still lead to chipping of that coat of metal
it's definitely a much better choice than usign paint, but to go through all that effort and be left with tips taht will still chip--ehh =\ -

From the color... i think it is pre made from pilot. (Watch for the inside of the tip).
I already have my ring electroplated, and the color is not like taht (or maybe because of different chem. sol.) -
Date: Wed, Apr 23 2008 05:57:38
well, even though the inside is gold too, that doesn't mean it wasn't electroplated =\
but even with that said, i think that those gold dr. grip tips are made from pilot as well ^^'''' -

You know that if you sand Dr. Grip tips, the gold underneath will show. But it might look crappy, I havent tried yet.
-
Date: Wed, Apr 23 2008 12:03:38
it looks pretty smooth. probably not sanded. and its brass not gold

If youre so desperate why dont you go to a real gold plater and have him do it professionally. Would probably look amazing and since it's such a small item it shouldnt cost too much. -

Whatever the Mythbusters do, you never do it at home.
