Pen Modifications / LED/Glow Pen mod design ideas

So i'm planning on making a LED pen, but i'm looking for ideas for electronic design. Theres so many different ways this can be done. I was thinking about making one that twists and the lights on the ends turn on. Also you could have a clicker simliar to a retractable pen which turns the device on. My friend gave me an idea for one that only lights up when it is spinning simliar to a frisbee he had that lit up when you threw it.

I'm not looking for a tutorial and i'm not offering to write a tutorial, i mostly am looking for basic design ideas. I saw a youtube video of this kid who stuck a glow stick inside a Signo tube...thats lame and completely not what i'm looking for. I plan on breaking out my soldering iron in order to make something really interesting and unique.

I'll draw this thing out and go to radio shack to pick up parts. Lemme know if you know of any cool electronic parts that could be used that are small enough to fit in pens.

yea, i pretty much figured how to make a led pen, but my version would be pretty ugly and would need drilling for the holes.

I havent figured the twist part.

the led lights i use have 3 settings.

    Solid, strobe and fast strobe.

the hole for the led would kinda look like the button from K4s's Monamis R RSVP MX.

i've seen k4's twist led, thats pretty sick.

im no where near the skill level of modding as k4s.

but maybe we can colloab some ideas for this.

k4s stated that this mod is for the elite and wont give tutorials, so i guess the challenge is up.

if you want when i get home from work i can take a pic of the Led's im currently working with to give you a idea of what my set up is.

I'm up for the challenge, i need a project.

ok i had an idea.... Do you think that LED's would shine brighter embedded in glue sticks? I was thinking about sticking a glue stick into the pen with a few LEDs daisy chained throughout the pen in order to give the pen weight and keep them from moving around...

good luck guys wink.gif I've seen many people attempt LED mods and give up.

...and try not to stray too far away from pen parts because both versions of my LED mods use bare minimum external parts and majority pen parts re-engineered for different purposes ;D

I like your Glue stick idea.

but heres my spin on it.

The led pens that i use now have a plastic end so when it lights up the insides of it has a crazy design. ill post pics in a lil bit when i get my self situated.

but i was thinking about carving a spiral design into a hot glue stick. and cleaning it up a bit. So when the light hits it. the design of the spiral really shows up nicely. and if i polish up the glue stick, it will transfer the light very well.

Sadly i ruined one Led light pen already, but doensnt matter, i get them for free at my uncles bank haha.

ill have pics up within the hour

This is the led ill be working with

the led in the pen im using is slight bigger then 5mm, and having a hard time fitting them into the pens i have now.

I found a website that sells bulbs for 77 Cents each, i might just order like 20 so i can just mess around with.

okay so ... here we go =P

    1. yes i am new to spinning, and the vids not good, its just to show that the leds DO work.
I happen to be a better modder then a spinner.. but im only a month into spinning

    2. yes its a ghetto led attempt, but i cannot try it for real until i order 3mm leds that will fit into a rsvp, these were waaay to big.

    3. no i will not release a tut until i can make a fully functional led pen that works 100% of the time, one side keeps dimming out when i spin too much.

    4. Im useing a gif maker that strings multiple screen shots that are taken really fast 2gether. hence why the video is bouncy and not soo smooth.
im not a great spinner, but i can do all Fundamentals and combo them long.

    Blam Video up

Housetek, are you using pens with LEDS already built into them? It seems so to me. :| I might be wrong though.

    He is.
but he's ordering leds to try to mod
his own personal led mod. I'm pretty sure
this was just a little project to get
    some fundamental understanding of leds
    and stuff like that

Tylt is right the pens have them built in, and i got them free at a bank.

I was taking them apart and putting them back 2gether.

Found out the lights were too big to fit in a rsvp so i just cut a RSVP cap off, and using grips from Free pens from the same bank i put it on the tips of the pen *after i dismantled them* then i just use a dremmel tool to widen the RSVP cap hole and fitted them in and used the grips to hold them 2gether.

its nothing special.... i mean i coulda done equally well by jus duct taping them together, this is a joke mod. its not good at all but it does look cool.

I do now have a understanding of the Leds.

I was talking to k4s earlier and im on the right track i think. I came up with some ideas he did try but scrapped.

such as making a Monami R Rsvp MX Led mod...

but his 2 other versions of the led mod are solid and work soo well.

i AM haveing a lil problem keeping the lights on solid 100% of the time, you'll notice in the video one side dims out.

I am thinking about sticking the light mechanism into a RSVP cap but the set up im thinking about right now only lights one side, whereas K4S's awesome mods is a single twist on mechanism and lights up both.

my version will have a modded spring with rubber cement on the tip on it to block the charge, then having a metal tip at the end of the rsvp cap.

once the cap retracts the metal tip will hit the battery and light up one side of the pen.

Im thinking of gettin some sort of plastic Fishing wire and maybe cutting it 2gether so the light travels thru the RSVP and around the ink tube.

Other wise the pen will only light the one side.

but again i wont be able to try until i get some leds, and batteries that will fit.

right now tryin to find any one to help throw in some ideas and whatnot who may know more about leds and electronics.

im even thinking about gutting the pens i have now and maybe finding a way to squeeze the light in, but its best for a 3mm light cuz the barrel size is under 5mm

I only have one question for you. Do you have a housing for your battery there? Otherwise its kinda useless. You might be able to snag one from a watch but... idk tinker around with it. And of course best of luck.

okay so the led's i bought are soo F'ing lame, and dull. i gota get better ones. i can light them up and they fit perfect into a rsvp.

I did however find a led that glows perfectly in one of my lighters which i will dismantle later on. I do have housings for 5mm leds and a power source.

for now what i did was fashion my other pen into a rsvp G2 hybrid with Profile grips. the Cog is off so ill fiddle around with that.

this whole project is giving me a headache cuz the average led light takes 1.7 volt to 2.5 volts and batteries that do fit are only 1.5 which means i need 2.

I did find a 3 volt battery but it doesnt fit into the rsvp barrel as well as i want, i will need to fashion it into a Rsvp cap to make it work.

for now check out what i made until i get get new bulbs and figure a new way to twist power the leds rather then button power them.

    -htk

looks nice, but you're still using the entire led stick mechanism. ever thought of taking it out and putting it in a cap of a double sided mod?

yea this is just somthin to fool around with until i can get the mechanism into a rsvp cap.

the problem is with led's if you dont get it PERFECTLY aligned in there, they dim out and turn off. then you gota take it apart.

makin this pen a horrible pen to spin cuz if you drop it, it'll distrupt the mechanism if its not secure in there.

Here is something that I basically made out of an RSVP body, two random caps, and some LED's I found at Jewel for a buck. I'm hoping to get some KT caps to replace the random caps, making it into a clear-body Dr. KT with LEDs... laugh.gif

If I remember correctly, Mr.LSC worked with Mwahaha to make the first LED mod. Soon after, I made my own and people liked it much more than the original. I don't have the original file, but if anyone has this video, please share.

I put one LED along with the button batteries into the see through cap and another LED in the g2 tube in the momentum mx. It was a simple circuit that ran through and ended with a wire poking out of the screw on back cap. When you pushed the cap onto the pen, the wires would connect and the two LEDs would light up creating the "comssa" effect. If you know how to make a simple circuit, all you need is time and patience to make this mod. I never released a tutorial, but here is the original thread:

Anybody have the video? I doubt it as there aren't a lot of oldies around here....
