UPSB v3

General Discussion / Speed Bic Modding Contest - Current Records (24.425s 1x, 52.119s 2x, 92.859s 3x)

With prizes from PenWish!

    Date: Thu, Apr 24 2008 03:06:03

This is a competition about who can film him/herself modding bictories the fastest.

Submit a video showing the preparation, initial setup, the whole modding process, and the final product. Each person can submit an unlimited number of videos, at any time.

The fastest video becomes the current "record". People then have 1 month to submit a faster video. If no one can surpass that video within a month from the moment that video was submitted, the creator of that video is declared the winner. If someone submits a faster video, that one becomes the new record which must stay on top for 1 month.

    Preparation:

The video must first show each pen individually, to verify that they are real bics. Press on the tip and backplug to show they are firmly secured. The clip of the cap should also be straight and not partially cut. It must be a new, unmodded, bic with the label visible to prove it. At this point, the timer has not started yet, so you can take your time doing all the preparation.

Then the video must show the initial setup.

    Initial setup:

    - A clock/timer, which is clearly ticking and showing "seconds"
    - X bic round stics (depending on the category, see below)
    - Scissors and/or pliers and/or a single stick (chopstick, skewer, ...). If you want to use other tools, ask my permission.
    - Hands must be off-screen.

As soon as the hands enter the screen, the official timer for the attempt starts.

The video must show the whole modding process. Use this for reference: http://www.upsb.info/wiki/index.php/Bictory. You do not need to file the clips or put grips on. You do need to trim the ink tubes by cutting them. You also do not need to follow the steps indicated in that tutorial, as long as the final product is the same as the mod described in that tutorial.

All mod parts must stay on the screen at all times. If a tool leaves the screen, you cannot use it again.

As soon as the mod(s) is finished, the timer is stopped when the following final setup is achieved.

    Final setup:

    - The same clock/timer
    - X complete BICtories
    - Hands must be off-screen.
    - Tools may be present

    Categories

There will be 3 individually kept records. They are run seperately and entries are submitted for each category seperately.

    - 1 bictory (Current Record: 24.425 seconds by Outlander [07/30/08])
    - 2 bictories (Current Record: 52.119 seconds by Outlander [07/30/08])
    - 3 bictories (Current Record: 92.859 seconds by Outlander [07/30/08])

    Other Entries

    - 1 bictory: 30.064 seconds by shonenbatman [07/31/08]
    - 1 bictory: 28.761 seconds by Sfsr [08/12/08]

    How to submit

Send me a PM with a link to your video. For convenience, give me a link to a downloadable copy of the video (via sharebee or other) and a viewable link (youtube or other). Alternatively, you could post your entries in this thread. NO SIGN-UP REQUIRED.

    Results

Videos received will be evaluated to make sure they respect the rules. We also determine what is the official time of the attempt. We hold the right to refuse any video. Videos are made public as they come.

Even if you made a video that's clearly slower than the current record, don't be afraid to submit it. We will evaluate it nevertheless and give you a time. This will give you a ranking. It's possible that the prize is not limited to the champion only, so don't be afraid to submit your entries!

    Prizes

TBD by Penwish. The more popular the contest is, the bigger the prize. There are prizes for each category seperately. One could theoretically win in all three categories.

    GOOD LUCK!

will there be a sign up or just FFA and send in vids?

  3. Zombo
    Date: Thu, Apr 24 2008 03:15:14

    oops forgot to mention that.

No sign-up required. Whenever you got a video ready, show it.

BTW, if you hold a record, and you film an even better video, you can beat your own record. It does not reset the 1 month.

Would a Papermate Eagle be allowed, too? I mean, the two pens are basically identical.

    no.

even the slight differences can affect modding time dramatically.

this is the first time we're doing this, and ppl said it was a good idea, so...

I might as well make an attempt at it. I'm gonna go buy my bics tomorrow and make an entry for each category (as long as thats okay).

The following entries have been received and validated:

    Bictory Mod x1 by Outlander:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/133661267/Spee...t__x1_.avi.html
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwlTUnzBDf8
Time of the attempt: 24.425 seconds

    Bictory Mod x2 by Outlander:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/133669854/Spee...t__x2_.avi.html
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IxWJ5cLRRQ
Time of the attempt: 52.119 seconds

    Bictory Mod x3 by Outlander:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/133676765/Spee...Mod_x3.AVI.html
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akzJQ3_cSec
Time of the attempt: 92.859 seconds

These are now the time to beat for each category.

    First post has been updated.

Comments: Outlander didn't do the "preparation phase" but I guess it's pretty obvious those are legit bics. Those times are pretty good, especially the single bic one. I still think there are opportunities to cut some time in that one though. Third video seem a bit sloppy because of the difficulty to get off that back cap from the 2nd tube, which obviously shook him off his game and he had several "misses" from that point on (such as having difficulting inserting ink tubes, etc.) There might be better approaches to cut down time in multiple bics attempts by "pipelining" work on multiple BICtories at once.

Looking forward to seeing more videos! This is not as easy as it may seem to be!

This does not beat the record but is currently 2nd.

Comments: There were two mistakes made. First of all the hands do not start off-screen so I had to count from the moment the hands made a forward motion to the moment they were still. Second mistake is that one of the bic fell offscreen for a short moment.

It makes a HUGE difference. The back cap is glued on A LOT harder than the normal round stics...I couldn't get it out with a metal rod...had to cut it. If the back caps however were glued on like normal round stics....then it would be too easy >.<

  25. Outlander
    Date: Fri, Aug 1 2008 02:27:22

Its easier to pull out the tips with the grip ones (you don't need teeth or pliers). And the barrels are shorter, so I don't know if its okay for this contest, but its all up to Zombo.

i meant for me, it makes no difference, obviously it's harder to get a better time with them.

Uh, do I actually have to show inside my mouth and smile the whole time though haha. That part was kind of a joke, and I'm pretty sure no one actually wants to see the inside of my smelly mouth nor my crooked teeth.

  43. Kam
    Date: Thu, Aug 14 2008 04:58:08

Hmm...I made like 10 bictories today and my best time was only 35 secs sad.gif

I was wondering...why do we restrict what tools we use? Shouldn't modding be about finding the best methods for making a mod? If we give people the choice to use scissors or pliers, or a stick to get the back cap out, why not just open the tools and methods altogether?

I just don't like using pliers or scissors to remove the ink tube because both of them tend to damage the pen in the process. And even though this is for speed, I still want to make a nice and clean bictory XD

I bet I could make a faster time with my own tools tongue.gif

  44. Zombo
