Mafia games can be really fun, but only when they're active. We should set another one up for late May or early June, when people are on their summer vacations and have more time to participate. The one that was held last summer at UCPSB was very interesting.

Nevertheless, I think there need to be some changes to ensure a dynamic game:

    1. We cannot realistically have days that last forever. Ways around this are having 72-hour days with the ability to extend the day another 24 hours (limited use), or to have the first few days last a bit longer (e.g. 96 hours) since that is when the most posting occurs. However, nights should last 48 hours at most.

    2. I don't think the prodding system works well. I think players should be required to post once every 36 hours, which seems reasonable. If they can't post this frequently, they should be auto-replaced.

These problems may not be as serious during the summer, however. Still, you should only sign up if you're going to be active and play!

This is not a sign-up thread, just a place for you to add your ideas and discuss things you would like to see in future Mafia games.

I agree with the auto-replacing thing, but there might not have enough replacements lol

Edit: Though some people may want to keep silent as a strategy, auto-replacing would stop that.

i want to see zombo play. (if thats possible)

i reckon the nights should be shorter 24 hours or 36 hours.

and no 'role claims' angry.gif sad.gif

and this is going to sound stupid, but what do you think about everyone having a role? i mean, if mafia is coming to some 'gatherings' w/e they should try to look as least suspicious as possible. :/
EDIT: well, not exactly to give mafia roles (then there would be no reason for them to act suspiciously), but to 'leave' some roles for mafia as well.

I know how mafia games work now. I would be happy to run one once summer comes round if Zombo wishes to participate.

I think it was very interesting that people had little tasks and special abilities etc... Would be nice to have them in a future mafia game. Did anyone else like that aspect (in spite of the fact it didn't really work out in the last game as people were not very active)? Anyone got any ideas down that road?

Ok, I'll list probable options for the major aspects of the game and maybe we can reach a consensus. Feel free to list your own preferences too. Don't mind the numbering system; it's just so that others can refer to them easily.

    1. Minimum Participation

    Possibility 1-1
Participants are required to post at least once every

    1. 24 hours
    2. 36 hours
    3. other
or else are auto-replaced. If a replacement is unavailable then they are auto-killed for inactivity.

    Possibility 1-2
Participants can remain as silent for as long as they wish, unless they are prodded. When prodded, they are required to respond within
    1. 24 hours
    2. 36 hours
    3. other
or else are auto-replaced. If a replacement is unavailable then they are auto-killed for inactivity.

    2. Length of Days

    Possibility 2-1
All days last 72 hours, unless a lynch occurs earlier. Days are not extended.

    Possibility 2-2
All days last 72 hours, unless a lynch occurs earlier. Extensions can be granted by the game coordinator if deemed necessary.

    Possibility 2-3
All days last 72 hours, unless a lynch occurs earlier; however, the town has limited ability to extend the day for another 24 hours. The town can extend the day
    1. 1 time
    2. 2 times
    3. 3 times
    4. other
and more than one 24-hour extension could potentially be used on a single day.

    Possibility 2-4
The first one or two days last 96 hours (maximum) each, because that is when the most discussion usually takes place. The remaining days last 72 hours long at most.

    3. Length of Nights
Not much room for debate here. Nights are fixed and last either:
    1. 24 hours maximum
    2. 36 hours maximum
    3. 48 hours maximum
    4. other

    4. Role Claims
Role claims are fixed. The game is not meant to revolve exclusively around role claims, which is why not many role-claiming opportunities are offered to begin with. Remember, there are other ways to prove your innocence if you are a townie. The number of role claims available should be:
    1. one-quarter the number of remaining players, rounded up to the next whole number
    2. one-quarter the number of remaining players, rounded down to the next whole number
    3. one-quarter the number of remaining players, rounded to the nearest whole number
    4. other

    5. Clues
In older Mafia games, role PMs included clues to the identities of players or a general important fact (e.g. "there is a serial killer").

    Possibility 5-1
    Play without clues.

    Possibility 5-2
    Play with clues. Clues:
    1. are included in role PMs
    2. must be gained by fulfilling a certain condition
    3. other

Clues (or potential clues) should be made available to:
    1. all players
    2. a certain number of Townies and/or Mafia, chosen randomly
    3. associated with certain roles
    4. other

    6. Powers
Note that powers, if made a part of the game, are only available to non-Vanilla members. Giving every player a power would make the game too easy for the townies.

    Possibility 6-1
    Play without powers.

    Possibility 6-2
    Play with powers. Powers:
    1. must be gained by fulfilling a certain condition and are available until used or the person is killed
    2. are available at the beginning of the game and can be lost by failing to fulfill a certain condition
    3. are available at the beginning of the game and cannot be lost to means other than death or usage
    4. other

Hmm. I would prefer (weather running or participating):

    1: Minimum participation

At least 1 post per 36 hours. The game will be in the holidays and so people should be able to stay active without problem.

2: Length of days I think should be 72 hours with extensions granted by game co-ordinator if required.

    3: 24 hours nights.

4: Role claims should be quite few. One quarter of players - 1 and rounded down. Having too many role claims makes the game way too easy.

5: It would be nice if clues were available by fulfilling certain conditions.

6: It would be nice if powers could be lost or gained by certain conditions being fulfilled.

Has UPSB got the best mafia games going on the whole net now? I think we might have ssst.gif

btw, the general philosophy the moderator should abide by is KISS (keep it simple, stupid). The moderator should never intervene in a game in a way that affects the outcome. That's why narration is only flavor text. In the same sense, rules should only be there to make the game playable. Hence, no edits, no screenshots and also limits on role claims to avoid "power strategies".

Because of that, there is usually no inactivity rule. Games with 20-30 players usually last 4-6 months.

What the moderator usually when the game is idle for too long is to declare the game dead and stop playing altogether. It is the players' responsability to make sure they capable of playing and/or to request replacement voluntarily and/or notify the moderator if the player has to be absent for a prolonged period of time.

Well, I have seen people "mod-killed for inactivity" at Mafia Scum. I don't think we can have games that last months here because the membership is a lot smaller and we don't have multiple Mafia games running simultaneously. If you are going to stick with the prodding system, then those who are prodded should be forced to respond or else there's no point in prodding...

I think days should be set. I like Grey Labyrinth's idea of setting a deadline for each day as it makes the game more realistic. The town has only until the sun sets to come up with a decision or else it's a no-lynch. The Mafia doesn't have infinite time to decide who to night-kill, so the Town shouldn't have that benefit during the day. Make the first few days longer (i.e. 4-5 days each) and the rest 72 hours.

I like the idea of having clues in certain role PMs and powers that can be gained through certain conditions, but these two things are variable.

But we definitely need more feedback from people who'd like to participate in future games. I interpret silence in this thread as "we don't care what the rules are."

I noticed how mafiascum games start with people randomly voting each other. This makes the game go much fast IMO, but that might not work for UPSB since we have such a small player pool. Maybe there could be such a rule that if there is no lynch for the day, someone random will be killed, in addition to the usual-killed-townie.

    Implications of this:
    1. Encourage people to vote and lynch, instead of letting the game stagnate
    2. Townies/Mafia can choose not to vote, in order to take a chance at eliminating townie/Mafia.

Can't think of more, and since I dont play Mafia, my suggestions might be totally wrong and inadequate.

i think the first couple of days should last 96 hours, and rest 72 hours, and keep the limit fixed. there is really no point in waiting for a lynch. also about roles, i think some powers should be gained by fulfilling a certain condition (like vigilante, some infos about the game), and some powers that can be 'lost' (like doctor, cop).
few role claims, and maybe some other limitations when they are used so they are used carefully, not just randomly requesting role claims.

Ending the day has to be enforced more. I planned on no-lynch at the beginning of the game but because the first day lasted a week or so then it didn't happen.

Also, I really think clues should be included like in the first Mafia game. As preparation to this one I followed the entire first mafia game, and I noticed that a lot of the Mafia's victory had to do with the fact that clues were considered a good option for a claim. I think clues are great for mafia game because they can be realistically fabricated with logic, while still having role claims in case someone isn't sure. This allows the Mafia a much bigger room to operate because basically once a Mafia player is asked to claim, or at least if the claim is a community, he only has like 2 or 3 options to guess from randomly, and if he guess wrong he's fucked, and I don't see the point in making Mafia a luck based game...
The idea of making the clues a reward for goals is good in theory but as I saw in this game they were really hard and/or risked your game a lot for something that can't be "Person X is Mafia" but only generally helpful stuff.
So either reinstate clues fully to townies and make them a part of the game, or at least give a role claim theme that is viable to fabricate.
Also, instate more powers. I know more powers require more people but try to include some new interesting things. I thought the first Mafia game was really good in every way, both in powers given, clues, role claims, theme...

If anyone wanted to give me rules then I'd probaly play. If played mafia, but I've seen it played in too many ways...
If the rules have been posted, that means I didn't find them, so if anyone wants to post the rules, or how to play, as a reply then that would make me want to play.
