General Discussion / Pen Spinning and Better Reflexes?

a connection?

I noticed when I dropped my pen I caught it with much quickness and have done it before
and now I've realized that by dropping the pen and the effort to catch it, it has really increased my reflexes

is there a connection? really seems so?

Well if you're constantly dropping it and catching it of course it's going to get easier since you get better coordination so I suppose it could increase your reaction speed.

    mhmm...i don't think so tongue.gif

although i have been able to catch my pen when it's flying out of my hand when i'm trying to spin while standing, and although that 'shouldd' increase my reflexes...i don't really think it has by too much =\
cause...in tennis..i still rarely realize it when the ball comes near me when i'm nto paying full attention, and actually..even when i do..i still dont' realize it..............and end up getting hit by the ball----a lotttt (i'm practically known for being hit by the ball all the time on the team xDD)

I've seriously noticed it. Whenever I drop anything I always catch it with
amazing speed for some reason. I'm almost positive that its the penspinning ohmy.gif

Video games increases reflex/reaction time, pen spinning does not in my opinion. All pen spinning really does is increase your finger dexterity greatly and help you develop carpal tunnel syndrome faster.

yeahh..perhaps the dropping somethign and catching it 'reflexes' may have improved or perhaps it's just muscle memory and a person just starts catchign something when it drops into a general area because he/she is getting so used to catching it

but once again, i dont' think that overall reflexes are improved cause i stilll get smacked with a ball all the time and i see it coming from half a court away

so perhaps it's just the muscle memory that's improving rather than reflexes--of course, reflexes are part of muscle memory, but i'm just saying those reflexes won't be carried over to anythign else

Yea the only way I see that it improves reflexes is in the catching department.

Exactly just catching. nothin else its all the same as it was still.
Like my friends will drop shit and i'll catch it. Its just because
i have to catch pens in class or teachers will get super pissed

meh...even with catching...i still can't catch a ball when it's thrown to me when i'm playing tennis or baseball or something =\

Thats different though. Thats the kind of catching that takes practice
and just basic coordination. Not saying your uncoordinated or anything
just that you are either good at catching baseballs, footballs, tennis balls
etc. but i'm just talking about just a straight drop down. Not arching or
    anything like that

  12. -JC-

    i guess..??
but then i would just consider that all part of muscle memory as i've said before =\
so it's not really reflexes that are improving, you're just getting used to doing the same action over and over again...

I do have an increased chance of catching something that falls off a counter top lately.

As true as that may be, my reflexes have increased somewhat.
Whenever I spin in class, I can usually catch it as it flies out of my hand.
And it's usually quick, without much thought. huh.gif
That way, my teachers don't get pissed at the constant slapping of plastic against tile like at the beginning of the year. tongue.gif

i don't think you have better reflexes because of PSing. you just learn to catch a pen, or you learn to drop it better rolleyes.gif

I think your pen catching reflexes are a biproduct and secondary skill your mind is learning when you pen spin. Although not your primary focus, this is something you will get better at over time. Think about it, the more you spin, the better you get at making a screw up look like you intended to do it in the first place.

Lol, tis true. After getting decent at handarounds , when I drop my pen as I try to catch it, it looks like I did a handaround.

Dont think penspinning has a big impact on ones reaction time. Juggling has, right from when you start juggling, and you keep improving your reaction time as you get better. The reason why you do that in juggling and not in penspinning, is most of what you are relying on in juggling is to react according to what your eyes see. While in penspinng you are more reacting to what your fingers are feeling. That is also why you can do almost any trick without even looking at the pen. Only aerial tricks are really relying on eye-hand-coordination, so unless you do those alot, i dont think you're gonna see any big improvement in reaction time.
